Chapter 39: CHAPTER 39
In the early morning, Takagi eyed the vehicle with a mix of skepticism and concern. The sky was still dark, casting long shadows over the area. The group had decided to leave at dawn, hoping to avoid attracting the attention of other survivors. Niikaz had already scouted the surroundings, confirming no undead were nearby. Most had been drawn to the chaos and noise from the bridge the night before.
"It's quiet now," Niikaz said, her sharp eyes scanning the horizon, "but we can't let our guard down."
Hisashi nodded. "That's why we leave now. Fewer eyes on us."
Meanwhile, Takagi stood frozen, staring at the tank-like vehicle. "Seriously?" she finally said, her voice sharp. "How is this supposed to fit all of us?" She turned to glare at the others.
Before anyone could answer, Niikaz calmly walked past her and tapped the side of the vehicle twice. Takuzo, standing near the back, tilted his head slightly, his face full of curiosity. "What's she doing?" he murmured.
Okada's eyes suddenly widened as if struck by an epiphany. "No way… It can't be!"
He sprinted forward and yanked the door open, revealing the interior. His jaw dropped. "Woahhh! This is insane!"
Hearing his excitement, the rest of the group rushed over, crowding around to see for themselves. Inside, the tank's interior was unexpectedly massive—a spacious, futuristic layout that could comfortably seat about thirty people. It even had room for their supplies.
"This is so cool!" Okada exclaimed, running his hands over the walls.
Naomi's eyes widened in disbelief. "How… How is this even possible?"
From a few steps away, Takagi remained frozen, her arms crossed tightly. She let out a sharp sigh. "Of course. I forgot about your powers. Is there anything you can't do?" she asked sarcastically, turning her gaze to Niikaz.
"Hehehe… You're welcome," Niikaz replied calmly, brushing off the sarcasm.
Still rubbing her eyes, Marikawa-sensei stumbled out of the house, her figure silhouetted in the dim light. "Where are we going? It's so early…" she mumbled, half-asleep. Her pajama top hung loosely, and her emergency kit dangled from her hand.
From behind her, Nishinoya froze mid-step, his eyes bulging. "M-Marikawa-sensei! Y-your clothes are—" His sentence was cut off by a dramatic nosebleed, blood spurting like a fountain before he collapsed to the ground.
Niikaz sighed and quickly draped her sweater over Marikawa-sensei's shoulders. "Sensei, are you still sleepy? You might want to get fully dressed before we leave," she said gently.
Marikawa yawned and nodded. "Sorry… I'll fix this right away."
Niikaz turned to Maresato, who was kneeling beside the unconscious Nishinoya. "Maresato-san, can you drive?"
"Eh?" Maresato looked up, startled. "A tank? I've never driven one before."
"Don't worry," Niikaz said reassuringly. "I've modified it to be easier to handle. Let me know if you need adjustments. And Hirano can help with the technical details if needed."
Hirano, standing nearby, was too awestruck by the interior to respond. "This is amazing," he muttered, running his fingers over the smooth controls.
Niikaz gave him a small smile before addressing the group. "Let's load up the supplies and get moving. The bridge won't stay clear forever."
Takashi and Rei approached her, their faces resolute. "We're ready," Takashi said firmly.
Niikaz nodded, watching as they climbed inside. The others followed one by one, each taking a seat in the spacious interior.
Finally, Kazu and Alice appeared at the door, Alice clutching her puppy tightly. Kazu smiled softly. "We're ready too."
Niikaz returned his smile with a warm one of her own, her gaze lingering on him for a moment before she nodded. "Let's go."
....
As everyone filed inside, they were greeted by the surprisingly open and spacious interior of the tank. It felt more like stepping into a futuristic bunker than a vehicle. The walls were smooth and minimalistic, with a faint glow providing light.
Niikaz moved to the corner and flicked her fingers with practiced ease. A large box materialized in the corner of the tank, followed by a compact yet fully equipped kitchen unit along the side wall. The group stared in awe, their expressions a mix of disbelief and amazement.
"You can store supplies inside this box," Niikaz began, gesturing to the large container. "Everything will stay fresh because time stops inside the storage."
The box was about the same height as Alice and roughly 180 cm wide. At first glance, it appeared completely empty. Niikaz took a water bottle from nearby, placed it into the box, and let go. The bottle vanished without a trace, as though it had never existed.
Okada gasped. "Whoa! That's insane! Where did it go?"
Niikaz smiled. "Just to be safe, I've set it so the box looks empty from the outside. If you need something, just imagine it in your mind, reach in, and you'll be able to grab it automatically. It's similar to dimensional storage, but I've adjusted it to align with this world's knowledge. It should be easier for everyone to understand."
Hirano's analytical mind kicked in. He stepped closer, peering at the box like it was a rare artifact. "This is incredible… But we need to make sure it never falls into enemy hands. A tank like this is already a prime target—if they knew about this feature, it'd be game over for us."
Takashi nodded in agreement, rubbing the back of his neck. The thought of someone using Niikaz's abilities against them sent a shiver down his spine. "Honestly, I'm glad you're on our side. I don't even want to think about what it'd be like if you were the enemy," he said with a nervous chuckle.
Niikaz's expression softened, her calm demeanor reassuring. "You're welcome," she said simply, her voice steady and confident.
The group exchanged glances, their respect for Niikaz growing even more. Her abilities seemed limitless, yet she used them with care and precision, always thinking about the team's safety.
As they began placing supplies into the box, they quickly realized how efficient the system was. Items disappeared without a trace but were easily retrievable when needed.
"This is amazing," Saeko said quietly, her fingers brushing over the surface of the box. "It's like having an infinite backpack."
Niikaz turned to her with a small smile. "Exactly. But remember, tools like this only work with the one that I acknowledged. Let's make the most of this advantage."
"Agreed," Hisashi said, his voice serious as he helped Saeko organize the supplies.
The group continued their preparations, the earlier tension replaced by a newfound sense of hope. For the first time in a while, they felt like they had a real shot at surviving—and it was all thanks to Niikaz.
