Chapter 33: Chapter 33: Northward Bound

Chapter 33: Northward Bound

The morning was crisp and still as Elsa prepared to depart. A pale sun rose over Arendelle, casting long shadows across the frost-covered castle grounds. The air was thick with the weight of unspoken goodbyes, though the group moving through the courtyard focused on their tasks with quiet determination. Horses were saddled, supplies secured, and weapons inspected. This was no ordinary journey; they were marching toward the unknown.

Jack approached Elsa, his sword strapped across his back and his expression grim. "The men are ready. Eira's briefing them on what to expect."

"Good," Elsa said, her breath visible in the chill air. "We'll need every advantage we can get."

Anna emerged from the castle, her hair pulled into a braid and her winter cloak trailing behind her. She carried a small satchel, its contents clinking faintly with each step.

"Don't think you're going without me," Anna said, planting herself in front of Elsa with a determined expression.

"Anna, we talked about this," Elsa said gently. "It's too dangerous."

"And you think I'm just going to stay behind while you march off to face some ancient evil?" Anna shot back. "I'm your sister, Elsa. Where you go, I go."

Elsa sighed, her shoulders sagging under the weight of Anna's unwavering loyalty. "All right," she relented. "But you stay close to me. No running off."

Anna grinned triumphantly. "Deal."

[The Journey Begins]

By midmorning, the group was on the move, their procession cutting a path through the snowy countryside. Elsa rode at the front, her gaze fixed on the distant mountains that marked the northern boundary of Arendelle. Jack rode beside her, his hand never straying far from the hilt of his sword. Anna followed close behind, her sharp eyes scanning the horizon for any sign of danger. Eira brought up the rear, their presence a silent reassurance to the soldiers.

The landscape grew wilder as they traveled, the roads narrowing and the trees thickening into dense forests. The air grew colder, and the familiar sounds of Arendelle's villages faded into silence. The farther they went, the more Elsa felt the pull of the Frostborn bond, a faint hum in her chest that guided her forward.

"How far do you think we'll have to go?" Anna asked, breaking the silence.

Eira glanced at Elsa before answering. "Farther than we've ever gone. The source of the corruption lies deep within the northern wastes. Few have ventured there and returned."

Anna's expression faltered, but she quickly masked it with a grin. "Well, lucky for us, we're not just anyone."

Jack smirked. "That's the spirit."

[The First Sign]

As the group neared the edge of the forest, the atmosphere shifted. The trees were coated in a thick layer of frost that glimmered unnaturally, their branches twisted into unnatural shapes. The snow underfoot felt strange, almost alive, as if it pulsed faintly with energy.

"This place feels… wrong," one of the soldiers murmured, his voice barely above a whisper.

Elsa halted the group, dismounting and walking ahead to examine the frost. She knelt, running her fingers over the crystalline surface. The cold bit at her skin, sharper than it should have been.

"The corruption is stronger here," she said, rising to her feet. "We're getting closer."

A low growl echoed through the trees, and the group immediately drew their weapons. The soldiers formed a defensive circle, their eyes scanning the shadows for the source of the sound.

"Stay alert," Jack said, his voice low and steady. "Whatever it is, it's watching us."

The growl came again, closer this time. The trees seemed to shift, their frost-covered branches creaking ominously. Then, without warning, a massive creature emerged from the shadows. Its body was made of black ice, its eyes glowing crimson. It moved with a predatory grace, circling the group as it let out another guttural snarl.

"What is that?" Anna whispered, her hand tightening on the hilt of her dagger.

"A guardian," Eira said, stepping forward. "The corruption's first line of defense."

The creature lunged, its movements almost too fast to follow. Jack met it head-on, his sword clashing against its icy form with a burst of frost. The soldiers joined the fray, their weapons striking the creature but doing little to slow it down.

Elsa raised her hands, frost swirling around her as she unleashed a blast of icy energy. The creature recoiled, its crimson eyes narrowing as it turned its attention to her.

"It's drawn to the bond," Eira said. "Your magic is the only thing that can stop it."

Elsa stepped forward, her hands glowing brighter as she summoned another surge of frost. The creature charged at her, its massive claws tearing through the snow. But Elsa held her ground, releasing a concentrated beam of icy energy that struck the creature's chest.

The impact sent it reeling, cracks forming across its black ice body. With a final, piercing roar, the creature shattered, its remains dissolving into the snow.

[The Aftermath]

The forest fell silent once more, the oppressive atmosphere lifting slightly. The group lowered their weapons, their breaths visible in the frigid air.

"Well, that was fun," Anna said, her voice tinged with nervous laughter. "Let's not do it again."

Jack sheathed his sword, his expression serious. "If that was just the first line of defense, we're in for a tough fight ahead."

Elsa nodded, her gaze fixed on the horizon. "We keep moving. Whatever's waiting for us, we can't let it stop us."

As the group pressed on, the frost-coated forest thinned, giving way to the open expanse of the northern wastes. The distant mountains loomed ahead, their peaks shrouded in mist. Elsa could feel the bond's pull growing stronger, its hum now a steady rhythm in her chest.

Somewhere beyond those mountains lay the source of the corruption. And Elsa was determined to face it—no matter the cost.
