I turned my curse into a blessing

Chapter 38: Alone with his loot

Sitting in his room Kol now had more time to think.

Kol locked the door behind him and then took off his bag. Remembering what he took from the treasure room, the bag then spat out everything except for the leaves.

He placed the 'witch light' on the bed, a metal staff with a short 3-linked chain on its end attached to a lantern with a candle inside it.

Looking at the staff Kol remembered that it was Zar who gave it to him, the half-orc whose head was now inside a glass jar beside him.

Kol looked away and decided to keep the staff as a memory of Zar. Although Zar gave Kol the magic word to activate the candle, Kol had no idea what else it could do. It would be best if he could go back to the shop in Lindow to have it appraised.

Kol then saw the sword lying on the bed. Drew was the one who found and wielded the sword so it would be best if he returned it. Besides, Kol has no experience in wielding bladed weapons.

Aside from the different gems laid out on the bed, Kol remembered getting a wooden box inside a desk.

Opening the box Kol found 5 blue spells and 3 black spells. Aside from the spells, there was a note.

The note:

If you are reading this it means I am dead, I pray you are not too late. I was captured by the sea witch not long ago and constantly tortured for information. The witch is after my spell forger but I will take its location to my grave. Its location I entrust to you. Please.

We hurt & heal without moving.

We poison without touching.

We bear the truth & the lies.

We are not to be judged by our size.

What are We?

The riddle caught Kol off guard, but the casual mention of a spell forger took his attention the most.

Spells naturally come from 5 of the main colors blue, black, green, red, and white, which are called base spells and although you can substitute runes from each color to create a different form of spell it still came from an original spell. Kol remembered the Conjured hand spell made by Peter was also adjusted later on by black runes to turn the hand invisible. The people of the balanced world are capable of creating their own base spells as long as they are knowledgeable enough, but only up to the 1st-level. Base spells made above 1st-level would then require a spell forger.

There were only 8 registered spell forges in the balanced world and the people would then create a recipe for a spell they wanted to be created and then send it to 1 of the 8 spell forges to create it. Overseers would then screen the requested spell to be created and would deny or approve their request.

If Kol found the spell forger the man in the letter was hiding, he would no longer ask for the overseer's permission to create his spells. The idea of making his own powerful spells only fueled his dream to become a wizard. Kol then took the letter and read through the riddle once more.

'Word.' Kol thought to himself and after speaking the word he waited for something to happen. But nothing did.

Kol then concluded that if he was right a specific word needed to be said to activate the box or that he was wrong about the riddle. Either way, Kol was in no rush to solve it right now since he was still a 1st-level wizard.

Kol then put the box back into the void bag then looked through the papers of spells to add to his collection.

Amongst the blue spells there were Fog, alarm, and nimble 1st-level spells and mist movement and wither for 2nd-level spells. Amongst the black spells there was rebuke, infect wound, and innocent blood.

Kol's eyes glistened with excitement for each spell he collected the more powerful he became, though he was not able to cast any black spells now. hopefully the future, he will and could put the spells to use. now is not the time to test them it would be best if he just copied each of them to his spell book.

Kol then opened his status.

To his surprise even after a day had passed his energy and health didn't increase. He concluded he reached his maximum and it will not grow unless he has reached a specific age or reached his 2nd-level wizardry. The other thing that caught his attention was that he remembered he used to have 7 permanent curses but now there were only 6.

Remembering what happened before, Kol's face lit up. Now he knows his curses aren't completely permanent. What was missing was his fear for Eden. Eden was killed and thus the effect of fear no longer applies to Kol making it useless and was removed from his status window. Kol then questioned if there were other ways to remove the permanent effect inflicted on him.

Kol then put everything inside his void bag making a mental note of the three potions he found inside Eden's playroom since they weren't labeled Kol wouldn't dare to test them yet. Leaving only his staff and sword Kol made sure to hide the void bag inside his bag.

"Wait. Won't they question where I got these since I got on board shirtless?" Kol asked himself. "Maybe I should keep it inside for now."

Someone then knocks on the locked door.

"Kid, are you there?" Rosseler's voice came from the other side.

Panic hen sets in as Kol struggles to find a place to hide his staff and sword.

"Just a second." He shouts.
