Chapter 37
The mansion of the House of Lenokhnen in the Royal Capital.
Violet sat on the sofa with her arms crossed, her legs intertwined. Her brow was furrowed.
“Don’t you have any plans yet?”
“What plans?”
“Regarding Princess Ferbache and Johan Harsen.”
At those words, Kasys fixed her with his deep, dark violet eyes.
“I can’t move yet.”
“If you keep this up, you’ll miss your chance. What are you planning to do if it goes as far as an engagement?”
“I’ll handle the timing myself.”
Kasys continued, “I will take care of it. You should stop concerning yourself with it.”
“How can I not be concerned? I was humiliated by Princess Ferbache!”
Violet glared at Kasys, her voice brimming with resentment, but he only stared back coldly.
“That’s for you to deal with. It has nothing to do with me.”
“Is that how you’re going to play it? I have proof right here!”
By “proof,” she meant the incident when he had the hyenas attack Johan Harsen.
At Violet’s threat, a shadow passed over his face. His gaze sparkled with cold intensity.
“Proof, you say?”
Kasys’s voice resonated low, sending shivers down Violet’s spine. Every time his violet eyes twisted coldly, she felt as if the very air had grown heavy with danger.
His chilling voice continued.
“If you think you can threaten me, it would be wise to stop. It’s pointless.”
His tone was laced with something icy. Violet bit her lip and looked away.
“I have nothing more to say to you, so I will take my leave. Don’t even think about getting involved in this matter again.”
Kasys said that and then dismissed her with a wave.
“I’ll watch.”
“What exactly do you mean by that?”
“……”
Violet ground her teeth at his indifference, but she couldn’t muster any more words and had to exit his office.
Thud.
The door closed behind her.
“Hmph.”
Kasys turned his chair to look out the window, his gaze deep and contemplative.
‘Johan Harsen, I haven’t forgotten.’
The moment that fool had embarrassed him in the training yard resurfaced in his mind. Crunch. He bit down hard on his molars. Rage boiled within him once more.
Every time he recalled those mocking words, even after sending out the hyenas, his desire for revenge sharpened with each passing thought.
This time, he would show no mercy.
No more compassion or hesitation. The hyenas he would send this time would be of the highest rank, those who could execute their tasks with certainty.
Though it was Kasys who initiated this plan, he seemed blind to the fact that his focus had shifted toward Fransia Ferbache.
‘Next time he goes on a field mission, that will be the time to strike.’
Unlike the First Public Affairs Officer, who leads from the front lines, the Second Public Affairs Officer frequently takes on outside missions.
That would be the perfect time to act.
Even if his father—the Duke of Lenokhnen—was watching him, he wouldn’t care as long as he only sent the hyenas out to operate.
Since he had left no evidence previously, even if the opponent was aware of it, it wouldn’t pose a problem.
There was no worry of the hyenas being captured and spilling evidence. They were bound by an oath, and the moment they revealed the truth, they would bleed instead of pouring out information.
‘Johan Harsen.’
Darkness thickened in Kasys’s eyes. The humiliation he faced last time flickered through his mind, igniting the flames of revenge.
‘This time, he won’t survive.’

Today, Johan dutifully reported for duty as a public affairs officer, only to receive a summons from the chief.
He had no idea why. Perhaps it was another assignment?
“Hello, Johan.”
Along the corridor leading to the office, female officers greeted him with bright smiles.
“Hello. The weather is lovely today.”
“Indeed! We should go out and enjoy it.”
As Johan smiled back, the female officers giggled and playfully nudged each other.
“By the way, where are you headed?”
“I’m going to see the chief.”
“Another special assignment?”
“I suspect that’s the case.”
“Be careful and have a good trip!”
After a brief chat with the female officers, he moved on. They stole glances at him and giggled as they walked away.
Upon reaching the office, he opened the door to find Fedelian sitting at the desk, his expression set in a serious frown.
From his stiff demeanor, it was clear he was not in a good mood, probably due to their earlier encounter in the audience chamber.
Back then, Johan had pointedly accused the Crown Prince.
“You’ve arrived.”
Fedelian did not even look up from the documents, focusing solely on them.
“What is it that you need? Hoping for another stroke of luck for me?”
Johan provocatively grinned, pretending to jest and poking fun at Fedelian.
“If you’re going to mess around, it would be best to stop.”
Fedelian shot him a serious glare. He usually shrugged things off with a smile, but the last jab must have stung more than usual.
“Anyway, I’ve called you because there’s another special assignment. Unlike last time, it’s a simple task, so take a look.”
Johan walked over to the desk, accepting the documents Fedelian offered and scanning the contents.
There were no specific destinations or special instructions. It simply required him to escort a target for a specific duration.
“Can a simple task like this fall under special assignments?”
Johan tilted his head, perplexed by why they would summon the Archmage for something so simple.
“Well, that’s something only my fiancée would know.”
“……”
The mention of his fiancée caused Johan to pause. Could it be that Rudella Bismarck had summoned him again?
‘She did say to call whenever she needed, but…’
He hadn’t expected it to be so soon. After all, she did come to the Topaz Palace last time.
“My fiancée has seemed a bit off lately.”
Fedelian narrowed his eyes, scrutinizing Johan. His golden irises shimmered, as if interrogating him.
“What happened at that time?”
“At that time, you mean?”
“…When you were hiding after being ambushed.”
“Nothing in particular occurred.”
Johan genuinely thought nothing had happened. The only significant event was their reprimanding exchange and the simple smile given while holding hands to maintain warmth.
Did that even stir emotions in a woman? Even someone as stiff as Rudella? It didn’t seem plausible.
“Is that so? You can leave now. Since the task starts right away, head to the Topaz Palace.”
Fedelian waved his hand, eager for Johan to disappear from sight.
Watching that, Johan quietly chuckled to himself while bidding farewell as he exited the office.
‘He sure seems angry.’
It wasn’t surprising. After all, he hadn’t expected Johan to speak so boldly in front of the Emperor.
It could have been deemed treasonous, but Johan was able to take such risks because he had a good understanding of the Emperor.
In the Emperor’s eyes, as long as the job got done, it didn’t matter who the person was.
That’s probably how that gloomy yet cunning Fedelian secured the position of Crown Prince.
He may look like that, but he is a top-tier knight and outwardly perfect as the Crown Prince.
‘Should I pay a visit to Rudella?’
Johan thought that he could tell Fransia later. With that resolution, he stepped out as an officer.
*
Upon arriving at the Imperial Palace, Johan soon moved to the Topaz Palace.
Along the way, he passed a garden flourishing with lilies, particularly enchanting under the bright sunlight today.
The pure white lilies always complemented Rudella perfectly.
As he crossed the garden towards the Topaz Palace, he spotted Rudella gazing skyward, feeling the cold breeze.
“…What are you doing here?”
Johan slowly opened his mouth, standing beside her.
“You’ve come.”
Rudella turned her head, a faint smile gracing her lips. However, her gaze subtly avoided looking directly at Johan.
“I’ve been waiting for you.”
“The wind is chilly.”
“I’m fine. I’m tough against the cold.”
Rudella stood up, smoothing out the creased hem of her empire dress.
“Today, we shall head to the Royal Capital.”
“Are you being secretive about something?”
“Indeed.”
Rudella appeared somewhat stiff, her actions awkward, suggesting she was rather tense.
“Your duty is to guard me until evening. That’s your mission.”
“…Understood. I will do my best.”
“No need to be so formal. It’s just a walk around the Royal Capital, after all.”
Seeing Johan’s serious attitude made Rudella chuckle behind her hand, a small grin appearing.
“Then let’s go.”
Rudella set off ahead. Johan slightly lowered his head and followed her.
Crossing the lily garden, they arrived in front of the Imperial Palace, where a coachman politely greeted them.
“Welcome.”
“Let’s leave right away.”
“Yes.”
Johan extended his hand to assist her into the carriage. After a moment’s hesitation, Rudella took Johan’s hand with her slightly trembling fingers.
Once she climbed aboard, Johan followed and sat across from her.
Inside the carriage, the two sat momentarily in silence. Rudella turned her gaze out the window, tapping the frame with her fingers, trying to mask her discomfort.
“Is there something bothering you?”
Johan cautiously asked. His low voice startled Rudella, causing her to look at him in surprise.
Their eyes briefly met; she quickly flushed and looked away.
“Oh, no! Not at all… How could I have anything to be uncomfortable about?”
Although they had ridden in the carriage together before, this was the first time she acted this way.
As the carriage gently passed through the blossoming garden, Johan quietly stared out at the scenery flowing by.
“The road to the Royal Capital is quite serene.”
Johan murmured softly.
Rudella quietly nodded.
“Indeed. But it feels like it’s been ages since I’ve had a moment to reflect like this…”
However, Rudella stalled, falling into silence. Fidgeting with her hands in an anxious manner, she glanced at Johan once and quickly turned her gaze back outside.
“No matter how I look at it, it seems like something is up with you?”
Having sensed something odd about her demeanor, Johan inquired. She had been acting suspiciously since last time.
“It’s nothing. Just… well, no… it’s nothing at all…”
Rudella hesitated, shaking her head. She seemed like she wanted to say something yet ultimately chose to keep her lips sealed.
“I see…”
Since he couldn’t pry further without causing trouble, Johan simply acknowledged her response.
“What do you plan to do once we reach the Royal Capital?”
“Um, well. For starters…”
“For starters?”
“I’m thinking of just wandering around and seeing where it leads.”
Rudella had no plans whatsoever. Summoning Johan had been an impulsive decision.
“I see. Sometimes it’s good to just roam around without a plan. It seems you’re thinking about managing your stress properly.”
When Johan smiled, Rudella briefly froze before awkwardly smiling back.
“Y-yes. Just as you said, I’m planning to manage my stress.”
“You’ve made a good choice. Stress is the root of many ailments.”
The truth was that Rudella’s recent emotional turmoil stemmed from Johan, but she held her tongue. If he discovered her feelings, she would never be able to face him again.
“However, you’re still avoiding eye contact today.”
“D-did I? I’m not sure…”
“You’ve been doing that since the last time we visited the Topaz Palace.”
Johan asked, purposefully probing. He needed to gauge her sentiments. If she harbored feelings beyond mere affection, he would need to maintain distance.
Regardless, she was the Crown Prince’s sharp blade. It wouldn’t hurt to be cautious.
“Hmpf. Hmpf.”
She cleared her throat awkwardly and widened her eyes, looking at Johan intensely. This time, their gazes locked properly.
Her bright azure eyes shimmered, trembling naively. It was evident she was desperately trying to avoid letting her gaze wander.
“…Are you alright?”
“I-I’m fine. No issues. Uh.”
She awkwardly smiled and reddened her face. Johan, witnessing that, felt himself spiral deeper into confusion.
There seemed to be no bad intentions behind her actions. It felt like she held feelings greater than simple affection…
No matter how he thought about it, it didn’t add up.
That Rudella?
Johan arrived at the streets of the Royal Capital, engulfed in this strange tension he couldn’t decipher.
