I thought I tamed the Villain Chapter 15

‘What was the deal with this guy?’

He was suspicious in many ways. I slightly avoided Frey’s sparkling eyes.

[Frey]: You’re such an intelligent kid. I expected that, but…

Frey somehow looked very excited. At this point, I really started to wonder what he was thinking.

[Iris]: Hey, mister. If you don’t answer straight, then carry this sprinkler.

I slipped the watering can from my hand into his. Frey then hesitated a little and spoke with difficulty.

[Frey]: Well, I was talking to you because I really want to be close to you. It was a secret, but the priests assigned to this orphanage are evaluated by the children at the end of the year. Of course, it was not going to be blatant, and the director will ask about me.

Frey explained with a wry smile. He must have meant that this process was a kind of character test.

[Iris]: You mean it’s an adult situation?

[Frey]: I can said so. Now that I’ve been honest with you, why don’t you help me?

Frey laughed. With that kind of face, he looked exactly my age.

[Iris]: Well, it seems that everyone is having a hard time living.

I let out a small sigh and shrugged. Apparently, the strange sensation I felt on January 1 was just an illusion.

[Frey]: But, I hope you don’t got me wrong. I really like you. I think we can be good friends.

Frey laughed sheepishly at me, who was like an old man. He cautiously reached out and tossed my hair slightly.

[Iris]: I was really curious about this, how do you know me so well? And didn’t you make eye contact with me on January 1st?

I had a lot of questions for Frey. Why did he have such an interest in me in the first place, why he didn’t say anything to me the moment our eyes met? Meanwhile, Frey was speechless, as if lost in thought for a moment. But even that didn’t last more than a few seconds.

[Frey]: I heard about you from the director before I was placed in the nursery. You’re a popular person in this nursery school, and you’re influencing a lot of kids. And it’s right that I saw you on January 1st. I’m surprised you fainted after that. Was there any sore spot anywhere?

[Iris]: ……. No, there’s nothing wrong with my body.

I replied succinctly (briefly) and kept my mouth shut. Frey’s explanation was impeccable (faultless). But is it my mistake that somehow the aftertaste feels bitter?

[Frey]: I understand being vigilant. It was my mistake in thinking you would be just like any other child.

Frey looked at me like that and added. As he said that, Frey’s face conveyed overwhelming emotion.

‘Yes. That attitude is weird.’

Looking into those blue eyes, I finally realized the reason Frey suddenly approached me. His overall impression was very soft, and his unsightly features were also something that anyone could fall in love with. But even so, the awe I sometimes felt when he looked at me was unnatural. What seventeen-year-old would look at a child much younger than me and have loyalty, sacredness, or feelings?

‘I think he was trying to keep giving me a friendly image of him, but…’

Frey’s appearance was rather sloppy. Because, unlike his smiling mouth, his eyes were gleaming dangerously.

‘Why are you giving me that look?’

No matter how much I thought about it, I didn’t understand.

‘Or am I simply mistaken?’

I would rather ask Frey directly so that he could tell me that I was mistaken, but this was an embarrassing concern to ask openly. If I asked Frey, ‘Why do you look at me like that?’ I knew I will only come out as a weirdo.

[Frey]: What are you thinking?

[Iris]: Nope. Nothing.

In the end, I chose to keep my mouth shut. Just because Frey’s presence was suspicious right now didn’t mean there was anything I could do right away. It seemed better to wait a little longer and watch.

‘You didn’t seem to have the heart to hurt me.’

Judging from Frey’s attitude anyway, it seemed that he was going to be hovering around me to the point of annoyance from today onwards. So today was an operational retreat. I quickly picked up another watering can.

[Iris]: It was nice to meet you. I’ll go first as I decided to study with a friend.

[Frey]: Then I’ll have to go too. Can I say hello again the next time we meet?

[Iris]: Absolutely.

I replied with a smile, pulling the corners of my mouth. Originally, it was best to treat them with an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. After greeting Frey, I hurried into the building a little bit. Hoping that I wouldn’t look unnatural as I quickened my steps.

I and Theo started studying together for our future some time ago. This was because we heard that there was an academy that we could enter if we passed the entrance exam, regardless of our status.

It was the prestigious Havrina Academy.

Since then, we hoped that maybe we can enter the academy together and live a life that is completely different. Therefore, we would always meet in the same common room at the appointed time.

[Iris]: Have you been waiting for a long time?

I entered the room a little hastily.

[Iris]: Theo?

Theo somehow didn’t answer my call either. Beside the window, he sat with a pouting face.

[Iris]: Are you mad that I’m late?

[Theo]: Nope.

[Iris]: But what’s wrong all of a sudden?

[Theo]: What?

[Iris]: Look, you answered bluntly. What’s wrong?

Theo wordlessly turned his head away from me. It was like saying,

‘Come on, soothe me.’

I slid to Theo’s side as I put the books I had prepared.

[Iris]: Why? Did I do anything wrong?”

[Theo]: It’s not like that.

Theo was still staring out the window with his head turned.

[Iris]: What’s out there?

[Theo]: Don’t look.

I leaned towards Theo but he stopped me.

‘Eh don’t you know that this makes me want to see more?’

I began to feel unhappy with Theo, who didn’t even tell me why he was pouting.

[Iris]: What’s that?

[Theo]: Shouldn’t you study?

[Iris]: Let me just see this and then study later!

Then began my struggle to look out to the window. I dodged Theo’s arm and plunged out the window.

[Iris]: ……. What?

Finally, I heard Theo’s sigh behind my back, who couldn’t stop me. I stared blankly out the window. From the window seat where Theo sat, what you could see in a straight line was none other than the flowerbed I had just cultivated. All I could hear was the rattling and the sound of the chair moving, and there was a stifling silence between me and Theo.

[Theo]: I told you not to look.

Before I knew it, my red-hot ears were sticking out from between my slightly grown hair. Theo’s voice sounded as if I had seen a lot of embarrassment. I quickly began to open the book with an awkward gesture.

[Iris]: Ooh, how far have we studied?

Theo, who didn’t blink an eye, came out like this, and I was completely conscious of it. Was Theo keeping an eye on me while I’m talking to Frey? That made me feel bad. Even as I thought about it, somehow my little heart was pounding.

‘Stay sober. Iris. Do you really think you’re eleven?’

I was the same age as Theo, but I had an adult mind. So I couldn’t really be like an eleven-year-old.

‘I’ve already acted childishly, but…’

Anyway, now is the time to focus on what matters most to us.

[Theo]: Iris, can we take the real test?

Theo asked. Anyone is eligible to take the prestigious Havrina Academy, regardless of age or status. I had taken advantage of this fact to persuade Theo to take the entrance exam with me. Theo nodded at my suggestion without saying a word, as usual, but apparently, he was not feeling confident inside.

[Iris]: What can’t you do? There was no provision that orphans couldn’t take the exam.

[Theo]: Iris….

Theo frowned slightly at my confident answer.
