Chapter 64: Witch of Walpurgis (3)
“What?!”
“She’s suddenly grown!”
The Imperial wizards’ faces turned aghast as they faced the enlarged Witch of Walpurgis.
They had unleashed a barrage of magical attacks against a creature that was fully capable of handling them, and they didn’t seem to understand what they had done.
At first glance, it would be hard to tell what this creature was.
It’s not hard to understand the Imperial citizens’ impulsiveness when it comes to unleashing magic.
Against the Witch of Walpurgis, the four major magics inflict no damage whatsoever, in fact, it’s closer to the opposite.
If an attack directed at her contains any magic at all, she has the ability to absorb it and turn it into her own power.
In other words, it could not be defeated by the magic of the people of the Eloreal Empire alone.
“Retreat! We’re retreating! Get the Archmages from the magic tower or the royal court as soon as possible!”
As if they couldn’t imagine that the creature’s growth could be attributed to magic, several of the faculty members moved toward the tower to summon the Archmages.
I could roughly understand how the creature had regained its full strength in my previous life.
We’ll have to end this somehow before it gets any worse.
“Wow…..We’re supposed to deal with that thing without magic?”
“One look is enough to tell you that you can’t just leave it alone.”
Eamon and Charlotte, who had come to stand beside me, also voiced their own impressions of the rambunctious creature before them.
“Exactly. As long as we avoid using offensive magic we can use auxiliary magic until we approach the creature.”
“I’ve never been good at attacking with magic, but you’re okay with that?”
“Doesn’t matter, just get into position.”
Eamon adjusted his stance, gripping a spear taller than he was, and I drew the holy sword I always carried at my waist, just in case.
“Everyone stand back, we’ll take it from here!”
As soon as Ariana’s words echoed through the halls, more than half the students and professors paused in their steps.
She had been teaching hard at the Academy for the past few weeks, and the perception of her as a good wizard lingered among students and professors alike.
It was rewarding to see it pay off in this situation.
“Ariana told you to back off.”
Shortly thereafter Charlotte unleashed a blast of arcane magic on the unwary.
It was a spell of minimal lethality and scale, but it seemed to have enough power to bite the dazed mages.
Once Charlotte had dealt with all the remaining ones, the stage was set for Eamon and I to fight in peace.
“Eamon, you take the left flank.”
“Got it.”
Taking Eamon’s last reply as the starting signal, my footsteps and his leapt forward at the same time.
“KOOOOOO!!!”
The Witch of Walpurgis’ reaction to seeing me and Eamon charging at her was instantaneous.
She immediately swung her right arm in my direction, throwing a magic bolt of arcane energy at me from her fingertips.
It would be a dangerous attack if it hit me directly, but my physical abilities weren’t so dulled that I couldn’t dodge it.
I dodged the bolt as it slammed into the floor with a hard kick, leaving a small crater where I had just stood.
“Now!”
As soon as a gap appeared in the body of the creature attacking me, Eamon’s Orihalcon alloy spear pierced through the creature’s left leg.
“Kuuuuuu!!!”
The Witch of Walpurgis let out a rather pained groan, sending both the spear in her leg and Eamon flying in a shockwave.
“Eamon!”
“It’s okay, I’m fine.”
His body rolled across the dirt with the spear, but that was as far as it went.
That level of impact shouldn’t even require using body reinforcement magic. Eamon’s body is naturally robust enough to handle it, considering he’s known for his resilience.
Although he looks dwarfed on the outside, the secret of his strength lies in the compression muscles hidden beneath his small frame.
“Kuuuuu!!!”
The Witch of Walpurgis, who had just been reduced in size by the attack, cried out in an angry voice.
It was time for the second blow to fly.
I expected it to fly at me like the first, but this one was clearly aimed at Eamon.
At first it seems to have recognized me as the stronger opponent, but after one spear in the leg, it seems to have changed its mind.
There’s no way Eamon can’t dodge what I dodge, so I feel free to step up to the Witch of Walpurgis’ right leg.
With my holy sword, I slashed at the defenseless creature’s right leg.
“Kuuuuuu!!!”
Letting out another loud and painful groan, the creature shrank a little.
It would be possible to regenerate the wound, but it would take a lot of energy.
Unless she could find a way to regenerate additional magic from somewhere, this was going to be a victory for me and Eamon.
“Archmage Wales, over here!”
Until I heard someone’s ominous voice, faintly audible in the midst of battle, and a bad prediction flashed through my mind.
…I’m pretty sure I had a similar sensation in my previous life.
“Now, wait, no magic!”
Ariana hurried over to the old man, who appeared to be an archmage, and tried to stop him, but the huge arcane bolt from his hand was already flying towards the witch of Walpurgis.
It was obvious to anyone who looked at it what the outcome would be now that the huge mass of magic had touched the demon’s body.
“Kuuuuuuuu!!!”
The creature, which had been reduced to a manageable size by me and Eamon, reverted to its original form as soon as it regained its strength.
“I told you no magic!”
“Be polite! Are you saying you don’t trust Archmage Welsh abilities?”
“I’m not doing this because I believe in his abilities! Magic or archmagic is useless against that thing…!”
As Ariana was angrily ranting against the Archmage, another Archmage appeared from the other side of her.
Along with a huge ball of flame made of pure magic power.
“Do you need my help?”
I don’t need it, please.
Her head was already hurting at the thought of having to deal with him all over again.
As it was, there was nothing I could do but watch helplessly as the spell flew through the air and landed on him.
The sphere surrounded by flames touched the creature’s body, and the Witch of Walpurgis inflated her size once more.
At a glance, she was over ten meters tall.
“I don’t need humans like you, so get the hell out of here, your magic is only going to make things worse!”
“Ah, Ariana, keep your dignity!”
“Do you think I’m supposed to keep my dignity now! You old people, who are going to die a natural death at any moment, just slapped magic on it without any countermeasures….”
“Koooooooo!!!”
The Witch of Walpurgis let out another howl.
It was her signal to launch a third attack.
Even if she grew in size, the type of attack magic she used wouldn’t change.
Both Eamon and I were ready to dodge the flying attacks.
However, the target designated by the demon for its next attack was neither me nor Eamon, but a third direction altogether.
“Archmage Wales, danger!”
She fired an arcane bolt at Archmage Wales.
It seems that the old man was the third target of the demon’s attack.
The only problem is that Ariana just happens to be in the mix.
“Archmage! Attack incoming! Deploy your magic barrier!”
“Heh, heh. Wait….Maybe it’s just my age, but I’m starting to realize that the recoil from my archmage….”
“Archmage Welsh!”
Besides, the one who had gotten us into this mess was helpless and breathing heavily.
It’s hard to expect a magical barrier from an old man.
Furthermore, Ariana can’t use arcane magic, so of course she can’t deploy defensive magic.
“Ariana, danger!”
A bolt of magic twice the size of the first attack’s arcane bolt flew out of the demon’s hand and into the crowd, including Ariana.
The people scrambled to dodge, fearing that it might fly at them, but most of them were too far out of range to escape.
“I’ll stop him.”
I could vaguely hear someone muttering that in the midst of the chaos.
Immediately afterward, I saw hundreds of magic barriers piling up in front of the magic bullets, and I immediately realized who the voice belonged to.
Zing. Boom. Crackle.
Each time the magical barrier collided with the magic bolt, it sounded like glass shattering.
The enormous arcane magic bolt, which looked like it could shatter everything, consumed a tiny fraction of its size every time it touched Charlotte’s magic barrier.
When she was down to the last ten or so of the hundreds of magical barriers she had deployed, the arcane bolt that had nearly engulfed Ariana simply dissipated in midair.
…That’s a relief.
“Run, you can’t beat that!”
“Quickly dodge, Archmage!”
“Kaaaaaah!”
As soon as we faced the demon’s true form, now doubled in size from before, even those who had been observing the battle from a distance quickly disappeared without a trace.
As did the two Archmages who seemed to be the source of the problem.
To come and interrupt the slaughter with their useless nuisance, only to disappear again without being held accountable.
The feeling of imperial resentment had ample rational reasons to intensify.
Though, in the end, it was probably a good thing that all the humans who could have made things worse were gone.
“Koooooooooo!!!”
By the way, how could things get worse here in the first place?
The Witch of Walpurgis was now letting out a roar that was more than a roar.
Where the hell do I even begin to deal with this thing?
As my head ached with such fundamental questions, a red-haired young lady appeared between me and the creature.
“…Ariana?”
With a stride so confident that it seemed reckless at first glance.
