I Think My Fiancé Has Regressed

C13

Chapter 13: Having a bad time (1)

There are two main types of magic classes at the Academy: theoretical and practical.

Basically, there are four types of magic: the three elements of fire, water, and wind, and arcane magic, which is pure magic itself.

Naturally, the Academy’s classes are organized around these four types of magic. Not surprisingly, over 99% of the students are familiar with only those four magics.

Of course, this is only a generalization, and we occasionally accept students with specialized magics that don’t fit into the above categories.

Magic that does not fall under the four major magics is taught directly by the Academy’s most senior professor, President Del Crouchia.

It’s not that he can’t handle anything outside of the four major magics, but he’s very well versed in all of them.

However, two years ago was the first year of the game’s setting. Instead of one or two specialty magic users being admitted once or twice a decade, two people were admitted at the same time that year.

One is Miss Sierra, who naturally uses light magic.

And the other, Ariana, who uses dark magic.

Yes, that’s me.

In the original game, Ariana was more of a device to make Sierra, the protagonist, stand out, so I made sure to compare the two several times in the story.

The keywords for light magic are healing, creation, and hope.

Dark magic’s keywords are destruction, annihilation, and despair.

Obviously, this is a diametrically opposed magic configuration to keep Sierra afloat.

Furthermore, in the game, Sierra far surpasses Ariana in academic achievement.

Unlike Ariana, who spent the two years before she was kicked out of the Academy, stagnating in her growth as a pea-sized mass of dark magic, Sierra had already accomplished the feat of giving an AoE buff to the entire Academy before that.

Of course, what I’ve said so far only refers to the original story in the game.

In reality, Ms. Sierra and I are almost exactly the opposite in terms of academic achievement.

“Ugh, ugh….”

“Try a little harder, Miss Sierra, feel the magic coursing through your body, feel the waves in your hands!”

Looking at Miss Sierra, who is already in her third year and cannot even form a proper magic sphere, it seems safe to say that there is no way she will receive any help in this life.

For my part, I entered the academy having done enough research on dark magic on my own, so I was able to learn a few usable spells on my own with little help from Professor Del.

During the Academy’s Second Great Demon Attack last semester, the Dark Magic Bomb, which concentrates dark magic into the middle of a demon and explodes it, was a big help.

The problem with Dark Magic is that it’s a huge drain on your energy, so I can only use it three times before I run out of energy and collapse.

Ms. Sierra’s AoE buff magic also restores magic, so I was able to use it until the third time with confidence.

Who could have known that she wouldn’t be able to use proper light magic by then?

Of course, she’s never been a good student, and I’ve never seen her do any private studying after school.

Still, I figured that if the game’s coercion was working properly to keep the plot moving forward, Miss Sierra would somehow wake up in this event that required her buffs.

But Ms. Sierra hasn’t helped at this point, and that’s likely to remain the case.

Now I’m sure that there is no such thing as game compulsion in this world.

There’s no such thing as drinking my tea and suddenly collapsing, or suddenly achieving some magical accomplishment after making no progress.

There’s no such thing. There’s only natural cause and effect in everything that happens.

In the end, the only person who can change my future is me.

“I can’t do it! I’m done for the day!”

“Sierra, it’s only a matter of time, and the other students have already reached the third level of magic, while you still only have a low-level blessing to use.”

“I don’t know, it’s too hard, I can’t do it anymore, light magic is different from other magic in the first place!”

Since she was saying such things to President Dell, believing only that she was the main character, I could not help but sigh quietly in my heart.

As I thought about the hardships I would have to face in the future, having to clear this game without Ms. Sierra’s abilities.

* * *

“That concludes our lesson for today.”

After about four hours of two-on-one tutoring, President Del said the words that signaled the end of class.

“Sierra, you need to work on your understanding of magic. The Academy’s library is well-stocked with books that will give you a basic understanding of magic, so please take the time to study them.”

“…Okay.”

It was a response that showed a determination to not waste time on private study.

“You’re getting better by the day, Ariana. I have a feeling you’ll be a fine dark wizard by the time you graduate.”

“Thank you, President Del.”

“Of course, it doesn’t stop there, keep up the good work. Although I know you’ll do well without me telling you.”

“Thank you for the compliment.”

It’s hard not to be intrigued by the way magic always seems to reward the time you put in.

I think I’m going to check out seven volumes of History of Magic from the library today, and maybe I’ll start to see some clues to the source of the dark magic.

Oh, come to think of it, if I ask Alex, I might be able to borrow some of the spellbooks in the royal underground warehouse. I know there are some forbidden books in there as well, maybe there are some related to dark magic….

“Hmmm, on the subject of dark magic.”

“…….”

While I was thinking about that, out of nowhere, Miss Sierra’s envious gaze landed on me.

“It’s a magic that does nothing but destroy and annihilate, and even if you’re good at that, what’s the use of it….”

“Student Sierra.”

“…….”

“There’s no birthright in magic.”

President Del’s words were enough to turn her into petrified slime.

Finally, after a quick bow to the professor, I stepped outside to find Alex waiting for me at the door.

“Are you done?”

“Alex, were you waiting for me?”

“Uh, yeah. I have another lecture to take, so I won’t be with you during class, but I wanted to spend the rest of the day with Ariana.”

“Well, I see.”

That’s so typical of a female-oriented romance game protagonist. In my previous life, I would have stuttered at the first word out of my mouth.

“I’m going to go eat now, would you like to join me?”

“Oh, sure. I’d love to.”

He’d come to my classroom on purpose, so the option of saying no didn’t even cross my mind.

It’s been a while since I’ve had a meal with Alex like this; for the past two years, he’s been spending most of his time with Ms. Sierra and her entourage.

“Now, wait a minute, Alex!”

As if on cue, Ms. Sierra, who was right behind me, interrupted the conversation.

“Leave this ill-tempered girl alone, and come eat with me today!”

“…….”

That’s an amazing amount of confidence to refer to someone as a bad-tempered woman in front of her and her fiancé.

Alex leaned closer to Miss Sierra, and began to whisper something in her ear.

“…Heh, heh?!”

Miss Sierra’s expression suddenly turned pensive, and she scurried off in the opposite direction without a word.

“Alex?”

“Sorry, you were waiting, weren’t you?”

“What did you say to Ms. Sierra that caused her to suddenly become so pensive and run off like that?”

“I told her to get the hell out of my sight while I still had my wits about me…no, I told her not to interrupt the precious time me and Ariana were going to spend alone.”

I don’t know if it makes sense to run away like I’ve just seen a ghost, but since Alex said it, I’ll take it as a given.

“Come on, let’s get moving. I’ve asked my personal chef to prepare some of your favorite things, Ariana….”

“Good afternoon, Ariana.”

“…….”

What Alex was saying to me was forced to a halt by the arrival of an unexpected figure.

“Good afternoon, Charlotte.”

I was surprised to see Charlotte, who I would have expected to be dining with Prince Eamon, but she had been visiting me since the first day of school.

“Arianna, you look as beautiful as ever today.”

“Oh, thank you, Charlotte. Why would you suddenly pay me such an awkward compliment….?”

“Maybe it’s because of that big piece of trash next to you, that makes your beauty shine even brighter?”

“…….”

Having said that, Charlotte’s glance towards Alex was one of obvious hostility that was easy for anyone to see.
