Improvements
I woke up early the next day. My maid has not arrived yet. I left my room and looked at around and found Melanie and Sylvia in the kitchen looking at each other. I hid by the wall and peeked at them. They were facing each other and looking around them. It would take some time before both get comfortable with each other. Oh well, let us intervene.
“What are you two doing?”
“Good morning.”
“Good morning, mistress.”
They both bow to me.
“Ver-, I mean Melanie wanted to help me cook.”
“Yes. I wanted to help mi-, I mean Sylvia to cook. My mother made sure to teach me.”
“So? What is the problem? I saw both of you just staring at each other.”
“Mistress, we do not know how to cook the same meals.”
“Yeah, mother thought me simple meals. It might not find your tastes.”
“Hmm, then how about we have Melanie cook? We will not know until we taste it after all.”
“Okay!”
“But what will I do, mistress?”
I sigh.
“I am still not ready for the day. What do you think you should do?”
“Oh, I will help you right away!”
Sylvia fixed my clothes and hair and then we had Melanie’s cooking.
“It tastes so good, Melanie.”
“Indeed, it is a different flavor profile than what I am used to but it weirdly gives a vague sense of home.”
“Whew, I’m just glad it’s okay.”
After the meal, all of us went to school.
“Both of you do not need to be with me all the time. Feel free to go somewhere else if you wish. We are students after all.”
They both nodded as we walked. Melanie was reading a book while we were walking.
“Isn’t that dangerous, Melanie?”
My maid takes the initiative to speak with Melanie.
“Oh, its no problem. I can sense when people get near with my shadow. Then I can just move out of their way. When I was young, I used to just stay in my parent’s shadow while walking. They scolded me though so I don’t do it anymore.”
“Wow.”
“Can you try to do it, Sylvia?”
“If what mistress said is true, what emotion do I need for shadow?”
“Huh. I don’t know either.”
Both tilted their heads as they thought about it. How cute. We arrived at school with both not closer to figuring out which emotion to enact shadow magic. And there I crossed paths with him. The prince and I looked at each other. I was on the stairs above him while he and his boy band are looking up at me. Please do not talk to me. You are too vanilla for my taste. After a while, the prince and his crew left.
“What was that about?”
“Melanie, mistress and the prince don’t get along.”
“Huh? Why? Aren’t they engaged?”
“I’m not really sure either but it’s best to just let it be.”
“Okay.”
They were whispering but I could hear them clearly.
“Stop talking nonsense, let us go.”
As we started to go down, I could see from the hallway something with red hair.
“Wait for a moment. Melanie, cup of water.”
Melanie and Sylvia were confused as I hid in the stairwell. Red hair was not looking around her as she walked. She even had both of her arms behind her head. I went down as she was about to pass the stairway and poured the cup of water on her head. I signaled to Melanie to move me away.
“What the hell!? Where are you, you bastard!?”
I waited by the stairwell as red hair was looking around.
“Tsk, when I get my hands on you. You’re gonna regret it!”
She walks away in anger.
“We can go now, you two.”
“What was that all about?”
“The mistress likes to mess around with that girl with red hair for some reason.”
“Really? Why?”
“I don’t know.”
Both were whispering again but I decided to ignore them. I am in a good mood after all. For now, I should be careful about messing with red hair. Which means, I will just keep pouring water on her head every now and then. All of us headed towards the classroom. As we enter, everyone stops talking. Melanie bows to me and heads to her seat. It was a few seats away form ours. After waving at Melanie, my maid and I sat on our seats as the class resumed its noise.
“Mistress, will Melanie be fine?”
As we sat down, various students approached Melanie. They are scoping out our relationship.
“Let her be. This is her battle. We will intervene if it becomes too much.”
“I understand, mistress.”
Melanie and Sylvia are improving. Slowly but surely, they will be better and improve in their lives. But what about me? I am still stuck in this hole, trapped in this rut, caged within this prison.
“Mistress, look out there.”
From outside the class, I could see red hair. She glares at me as she runs her thumb through her throat. Of course there was only one way to respond. An extended middle finger between folded fingers. Her face turns red as she stomps on the ground. She does restrain herself without making a scene and leaves.
“Mistress, why do you mess with her like that?”
“Do you not find her cute?”
My maid titled her head at my question.
“I don’t know.”
“That is fine. We all have our different way of looking things after all.”
I look outside. In the future, all of them will improve. Melanie, Sylvia, red hair, and all the other characters who will be involved in the future. All of them will be the future of this world while I will stay here. Watching all of them from behind. All I ask is that all of you will not look back. Do not look back as this villain finishes her performance. Ah, I do look forward to that day.
