Chapter 468: 468 Invincible: The Ruthless nature of the Viltrumites, Omni-man vs. The Regulator, Invincible meets Atom Eve, and Atom Eve is Rejected.
Nolan Grayson listened attentively to what had happened in his absence. Normally, he would calmly accept his son's actions, but he couldn't help but feel anger but hid it. An alien invasion was like skipping the tutorial levels and going straight to fight the first boss; it was obvious what would happen.
Nolan patted Mark on the shoulder, "Don't worry, son. Everyone makes mistakes, especially on their first mission. You saved a life, and that's more than most people will do in their whole life."
Mark lowered his head, but his mood improved. "You're right, Dad... I still wish I could be better next time..."
"You will be, son," Nolan smiled, but his eyes flashed coldly for a moment. "However, it's incredible that Cecil is already moving so quickly to replace the Guardians. They haven't even been publicly announced yet or had a proper funeral."
Deborah looked at her husband, who was unusually calm about what happened with the Guardians, but she wasn't surprised. It was well-known that Nolan didn't like teamwork, so despite being a part of the Guardians, no one ever really considered him one, and he rarely acted alongside them.
This was the trigger for the famous rift between Omni-Man and the Guardians, but now it didn't matter. All the Guardians were dead, and this loss was very real.
On the other hand, although there were many superheroes out there, replacing the Guardians might be impossible in the short term because they were truly strong, skilled, and worthy of the title of superheroes. Proof of this was the Guardians' ability to hurt Omni-Man, the Viltrumite capable of destroying entire civilizations. Of course, Omni-Man exaggerated his injuries and allowed himself to be hit more than necessary to play the victim. There was also the plan to escape, but there was a risk that someone would see him or suspect him because only someone with Omni-Man-level strength could take down the guardians.
"Cecil is moving fast to prevent the world from finding out," Nolan said, pretending to be worried. "Without the Guardians, many villains and criminals will see this as an opportunity to commit acts."
"I don't think that will happen..." Mark murmured, sounding a bit more downcast.
Omni-Man noticed this but before he could ask, Donald appeared. He had a calm look on his face. "I'm glad you're okay, Nolan, but honestly, you're Omni-Man. I'm not that worried."
"I'm glad too, Donald," Omni-Man blinked, his eyes fixed on Donald's reaction. "I thought Cecil would be in a rush to speak with me."
The first thing Nolan did was look for signs that anyone suspected he was the one who killed the Guardians. He had to make sure no one suspected him.
Donald adjusted his glasses without losing his relaxed expression. "The Director is busy with another matter."
Nolan narrowed his eyes. "Is there something more important than finding out who killed the Guardians?"
Donald became nervous, as expected. Nolan was ready to reveal himself if they had discovered his involvement. He had come to this world not as a messenger of peace, as he had claimed for so many years, but as an elite warrior whose goal was to study the planet, the human race, their compatibility with the Viltrumites, and, if necessary, weaken humanity's ability to respond. In this case, the Guardians would have been the main obstacle in the conquest of this world.
Nolan observed Donald's micro-expressions, but he quickly excused himself to handle important invasion matters.
Once he was gone, Nolan returned to his "loving father" version. He looked at his son, and while he spoke cheerfully on the surface, his thoughts focused on Mark. 'Only a few days after his powers have developed quite a bit... Could this be because of the combination of Viltrumite blood with human blood?'
Nolan had a cold look as he gazed at his son. If only Mark had never awakened his powers, he could have continued being a father, husband, and hero. However, now that the box was open, he could only continue with his original mission.
"Debbie..."
"Yes?"
"How did they contain the invasion without the Guardians and with me in this state...?"
Mark smiled bitterly. "First, Atom Eve and the rest of the Teen Team arrived, now they're the new Guardians... But even they couldn't handle it. It wasn't until the Regulator showed up that they managed to end the invasion."
A cold glint passed through Nolan's eyes, but neither his wife nor his son noticed.
"Who is this 'Regulator'... ?"
Mark and Deborah explained what they knew about Allen, which wasn't much, but it was enough to leave Omni-Man thoughtful. It wasn't until he called Cecil that he could learn more about Allen.
From his point of view, a man who claimed to come from another world and appeared at the place where the Guardians were killed had to be the most suspicious thing in the world.
"Cecil, why didn't you lock him up instead of giving him a job?"
"To keep an eye on him. I don't see a reason to accuse such a useful element. You must have seen him by now, right? That young man could cover some of the hole left by the Guardians..."
Cecil was careful with his words. He didn't want to raise Nolan's suspicions, so he pretended that he was just monitoring Allen until he had proof that he was the killer. Omni-Man relaxed in his bed. Having a scapegoat like that was a stroke of luck. Nolan thought that instead of pretending not to know who attacked him, a scapegoat would be very useful. But the doubt remained—did this Regulator have the strength to pass as a scapegoat?
Nolan asked Deborah to show him something about Allen. Gradually, Omni-Man's expression became colder. Whether it was his intervention with the Mauler twins or the few images of the invasion, they demonstrated great power. This irritated Omni-Man. His mission was to weaken humanity before other Viltrumites arrived. Allen was a variable he hadn't anticipated and would definitely be a problem.
Once he "recovered" enough, he requested a meeting with Allen through Cecil, due to the suspicious circumstances of his arrival. Cecil didn't immediately accept, using the excuse that this could raise Allen's suspicions. But the truth was, he was afraid that Nolan would see Allen as a threat and stop pretending to be a superhero to kill him on the spot.
Cecil consulted this with Allen, and in response, Allen laughed.
Allen – Cecil, tell him I'll see him tomorrow. Haha
Cecil – Are you sure?
Allen – Yeah, don't worry. You're not the only one who can teleport... By the way, technically, this counts as a high-risk mission, so I'll be charging extra...
Cecil – ...Alright.
Cecil agreed, but silently, he was surprised. The analysis they did on Allen revealed that he had a large number of abilities—super strength, enhanced reflexes, telekinesis, telepathy, matter and energy manipulation, flight, and now teleportation.
Cecil felt a kind of fear; if Omni-Man didn't exist, Allen would be the next person on his watch list.
...
The next day, Allen met with Omni-Man. It was a reinforced interrogation room, quite a curious place for a meeting. As soon as Allen entered, the atmosphere felt heavy. Allen intentionally contained his aura and presence so as not to pressure Omni-Man; he didn't want to provoke a fight right away. Also, he was more interested in seeing what Omni-Man wanted to talk about.
Omni-Man was in his superhero suit as he waited for Allen. Allen entered with his Black Crombie Coat, which had become his official Regulator attire.
Nolan immediately tensed up. His many years as a trained warrior on Viltrumite battlefields told him that his opponent was strong. There weren't many in the universe capable of facing a Viltrumite one-on-one, but it wasn't impossible to occasionally find someone who could withstand a round or two with one.
Once the introductions were made, Nolan's blue eyes sharpened, while Allen didn't lose the laziness in his gaze, with a touch of curiosity.
"I'll ask you directly, did you kill the guardians?"
...
Allen entered the room with genuine interest. He had even warned the dolls not to attack Nolan, no matter how rude or threatening he acted. He wanted to see what the Viltrumite would do in his presence.
However, his expectations fell short with Omni-Man's question. It was truly the height of chutzpah, Nolan asked him straight out if he had killed the guardians. What was he supposed to answer? Not leaving that aside, how could anyone have the face to ask another about his own crime with a look full of honor and justice.
...
Rebecca – This piece of trash, hahaha.
Harley – I can't believe there's someone more shameless than Daddy! Hahaha.
Makima – This was unexpected...
Albedo – How dare that scum accuse Allen-sama?! I'll kill him!!
Kara – Bastard!
Raven – He really had the nerve to use Allen as a scapegoat!
Maria Hill – It's a risky move, but very clever... still, what a bastard.
Kimiko – I'd love to punch him in person!
Rukia – Allen, looks like you found your equal, haha.
Yoruichi – Oh~ What a son of a... he really dared to lie so shamelessly~
Rias – Tsk, he has no shame at all!
...
The situation was surreal. Of course, it seemed like a clever move on the surface, but Nolan didn't know that his true face had already been revealed, and his current actions were almost laughable and blatant in the eyes of everyone.
Cecil clenched his fist from his monitoring center, which was overseeing the interrogation room with a camera.
'So many years together, and yet I never knew what kind of man you truly were. I admit it, Nolan, not Omni-Man; your superhero act completely fooled me, but I won't let you get away with this!'
Cecil reaffirmed his resolve and now treated Omni-Man as an enemy and a threat to humanity and Earth in general.
...
Allen stayed silent for a moment with an amused smile, even under Omni-Man's accusing gaze and the pressure he was applying. Omni-Man seemed ready to kill Allen on the spot if proven guilty.
Allen opened his mouth to respond, "I didn't do it, Omni-Man. It wouldn't make sense for me to stay there after beating you up. On the contrary, I should've killed you on the spot..."
This time, the tension increased even further, as the response hinted at a threat. Omni-Man's eyes widened. He was Omni-Man; who dared to threaten him like this? No, Nolan had already noticed from the beginning that no matter how much pressure he applied, Allen didn't show an ounce of fear.
'Who is this guy?' Omni-Man regained his composure and continued, "Still, I find it very suspicious that you were in that place..."
Allen chuckled softly, "The same could be said about you... Nolan Grayson."
At the accusation, everyone tensed up, especially Cecil, who didn't understand what Allen was doing. He was supposed to try not to raise Nolan's suspicions, answer a couple of questions, and then Cecil would intervene to end the interrogation.
"Me?"
"It's very suspicious that the world's strongest man was defeated while his teammates were brutally killed..."
Nolan didn't respond immediately. He had built an image of heroism and loyalty to this world over many years, and he knew that, no matter how unbelievable it seemed that an unknown enemy had done this, people would look for any excuse before suspecting Omni-Man. But in front of him was someone who had never known Nolan, someone from another world whose judgment was not influenced by Omni-Man's reputation or image of goodness and heroism.
"I'm not a god. I bleed too. I get hurt, and there definitely must be someone capable of defeating me."
If the opponent weren't Allen, he would have accepted that explanation. He could have even been moved by Omni-Man's nobility and humility. But for Allen, who never lost his mocking smile, Omni-Man didn't have the slightest bit of influence.
"So what now, Omni-Man?" Allen blinked. "You suspect me, and I suspect you. We can end this in two ways: one is that I could take advantage of the fact that you were 'seriously' injured yesterday to kill you and finish the job, assuming I am the killer, of course. But if I lose and you kill me, you might as well prove my innocence. You know, if I am not able to defeat you in that "weakened state", how could I do it when you are in your best condition and surrounded by the guardians?"
Nolan narrowed his eyes as the tension on his side grew. And yet, Allen wasn't affected at all. He didn't even flinch.
"Or we could give each other the benefit of the doubt and assume neither of us is fully suspicious, then closely monitor each other..."
When Omni-Man heard Allen's proposal, he stopped his actions. Nolan briefly glanced at the camera monitoring them and knew Cecil was paying attention to his movements.
"I've always liked to think that everyone has a good side. I don't know if you're the killer, but if we can avoid a bloodbath, I'll accept handling this peacefully until I'm sure it was you."
Nolan withdrew all the tension from the room and stood up, offering his hand in greeting to Allen.
Allen stood up and shook Omni-Man's hand. Nolan narrowed his eyes before releasing Allen and leaving the interrogation room.
Artoria – Did he try to crush your hand?
[I.M.] – "He didn't try. What surprises me..."
...
Without knowing what kind of encounter had taken place between Allen and Nolan, Nolan's son, Mark, attended his school. His mood had improved with his father's awakening and the chat he had with him.
However, there was also something that caught his attention—Atom Eve went to the same school, under the name Samantha Eve Wilkins. Mark had to admit that it was stupid not to realize it when she practically looked identical to Atom Eve.
He tried to approach and greet her, which ended up in a mockery and a scolding.
"You're the blue and yellow guy..."
"Ah... yes, I'm Invincible, not that I go by Invincible."
"That's a very optimistic name considering you got your ass kicked."
"Ugh..."
Mark felt awkward. After all, the first impression he had made on Atom Eve was terrible. But after talking for a while, Mark discovered that Atom Eve was very approachable and that her attitude in combat had been due to the situation they were in.
"I can take you to meet the Teen Team... we're the new Guardians now... I'm sure we'll be like the Guardians of the Globe in the future."
Mark felt a little reluctant to meet the rest of Eve's teammates. They didn't have the best reputation for being charismatic. But in the end, he accepted.
After school, they were about to head out when Atom Eve got a call about a villain wreaking havoc in the city.
Mark offered to help her and they both went there.
...
In the middle of the city, a man with a robotic arm, which was actually a laser cannon, wore a mask and a bulletproof suit. He was being shot at by many police officers, but the bullets didn't hurt him.
Angrily, he fired through a building.
"Did you see that? I've got a damn laser arm and they're still shooting at me?!"
The police ignored him and continued shooting; the annoyed villain aimed at a patrol car and fired, killing the nearby policemen.
The villain laughed with satisfaction...
"Hey, weren't you supposed to be defeated in chapter one?" Allen appeared behind the villain, looking bored.
"Ah!" The supervillain backed away from Allen and pointed a finger at him. "Didn't they teach you not to appear behind people?!"
"And didn't they teach you not to shoot lasers at people?" Allen went from a mocking smile to a cold stare. "Kursk, mercenary and supervillain, wanted for murder, organized crime, various thug jobs, and most importantly, former school bully."
Kursk froze, not expecting Allen to know about him. Although he was defeated by Invincible in the original story, due to the subtle changes that have taken place, it seems this villain managed to survive another day.
"Shut up!"
In a state of fear, Kursk decided to attack Allen with his modified arm, which had a laser cannon. The shot was aimed directly at Allen, and Kursk mocked him, but when it hit, it was deflected and returned to Kursk, striking him and destroying his arm.
"Ahh!" Kursk fell to the ground and looked at Allen in fear. "What did you do?!"
Allen slowly approached while drinking a soda he had taken from his inventory.
"How do you mean, what did I do? It's pretty obvious I reflected your attack…"
Kursk is filled with rage at being treated like an insignificant henchman. He began generating electricity from his body. Allen was surprised because this was Kursk's ability in the comics, and while his appearance matched the one from the series, his power was something new.
Kursk, thinking Allen's surprise was due to his power, became satisfied.
"That's right, my arm is just a secondary weapon. My real power lies in my ability to generate electricity! I am—! Ugh!"
Allen gave him a punch in the stomach that made him fall to the ground, clutching his stomach. He then vomited and fell unconscious with foam at the mouth.
"Shut up..." murmured Allen, looking at the man on the ground, then pulling out a sheet of paper. "I was going to give you ten years in prison, but now it's twenty for being arrogant."
In the sky, Atom Eve and Invincible watched Allen as he defeated Kursk. Mark gritted his teeth; he was about to tell Eve that it was time to go; their presence in this place was no longer necessary. But she ignored him and descended without warning.
Allen had already sensed their presence but didn't pay attention to them. It wasn't until Eve approached him that he looked up to see her descend. Eve was startled for a moment, but when she saw that Allen had no hostility in his eyes, she relaxed and smiled.
"Hello, Mr. Walker, Cecil has told us a lot about you and wanted to thank you for saving us yesterday."
Allen blinked, looking at Eve, who became nervous. "Don't worry, kid, it was nothing."
Allen turned and walked away, leaving Eve in disbelief. Had she just been rejected like a bothersome little girl?
Eve quickly ran toward Allen. "Wait, I didn't explain it properly. I wasn't just intending to greet and thank you, I wanted to know if you could teach me to control my powers better."
"No..." Allen passed by Eve, rejecting her for the second time.
"Huh?"
Eve remained silent, not wanting to insist too much, but wasn't it too much to ask for him to pay attention for more than five seconds?
As for Allen, he realized that no matter where he went lately, he ended up babysitting others. In this world, he preferred to live more carefree, free of problems and didn't want to adopt Eve. But Allen underestimated the girl's stubbornness, and she followed him for the third time.
Mark watched this in silence, with a bitter expression, a mix of jealousy and dislike for Allen.
'Seems like these two aren't going to leave me alone…' thought Allen lazily.
