I Received System to Become Dragonborn

Chapter 715: Buying Time

Another sharp crash echoed through the night as glass shards rained down from above. This time, it was the window just beside the one Aerchon, Arlyn, and Sylra had leaped from.

All three of them snapped their heads toward it with weapons at the ready, but as soon as they saw who was emerging, a brief relief flickered in their eyes.

Saeldir and Vael were mid-air, their body twisting as they made their descent.

The exhaustion in their movements was clear but they still managed to land with precision and rolling into a crouch before pushing themselves to their feet.

Vael exhaled sharply, his bow already drawn while scanning the battlefield. Saeldir straightened with grim expression as his eyes swept across the scene and saw dozens of Laston's metal soldiers still surrounding them with their glowing red optics.

"We need to move," Saeldir said, his voice steady despite the fatigue dragging at him. He turned to Aerchon, Arlyn, and Sylra, his Magic reserves dangerously low but his mind was still sharp. "Fighting them all here is pointless. We need to prioritize escape."

Aerchon gave a curt nod.

"Damnit. We've already taken out several power sources but we can't afford to get bogged down now. I don't know what he have in stores for us," Vael added grimly. Then pulling another arrow from his quiver. "Let's carve a path before we get buried in metal corpses."

The enemy soldiers resumed their attack. More red energy blasts filled the air, forcing them to raise their Magical barriers once again.

The strain was clearer now. Saeldir's and Aerchon's defenses flickered slightly under the relentless assault. They couldn't keep shielding forever.

Arlyn took the initiative and using their focus on Aerchon and Saeldir, and vanishing from sight for a brief second before reappearing within the enemy's ranks.

His swords flashed, cutting through steel and circuitry in a single fluid movement. Sparks erupted as metal bodies collapsed around him.

Sylra was right behind him. She weaved through the chaos like a shadow, her daggers finding weak points between the plates of armor, severing key components.

Vael provided support, loosing arrows with deadly accuracy. Each shot found its mark that either disabling or outright destroying a soldier. His quiver was running dangerously low, but he didn't slow his pace.

Saeldir, despite his fatigue, lifted his arm and chanted a quick incantation.

A surge of energy pulsed through the air and suddenly, the ground beneath their enemies erupted with jagged ice, impaling several soldiers at once. He staggered slightly but clenched his jaw, determined to push forward.

Aerchon remained the closest to him, cutting down any soldier that got too near. He could see Saeldir was running on his Magic, but there was no time to stop. They needed a clear path to escape.

The problem was, there was no clear path. More enemies were swarming in, blocking the exits. And then, from above, Laston finally moved.

He stepped away from the shattered window, his cybernetic eye gleaming. The air around him filled with his strange energy. A low hum reverberated through the tower, and suddenly, something shifted in the battlefield.

A new figure emerged from the shadows. It was another towering mechanical construct, far larger than the standard soldiers or Eryndor. Its core pulsed with a deep ominous blue glow and in its hands it wielded a massive energy blade.

Arlyn narrowed his eyes. "That's new."

Sylra clicked her tongue. When is this going to be over?!

Saeldir exhaled sharply. "We must break through now, or we're dead."

The massive machine took a step forward, its blade humming with power. The soldiers around it adjusted their stance and forming a wall of metal between them and the front gate.

A moment later, Laston's voice rang out from above.

"I think we've played enough." His eye gleamed in the darkness as he observed them from the shattered window. "You already know too much. I must admit, you are better than I anticipated. I thought of letting you go back to the Palace if you had just stayed in that room. But now you know how many armies I have, and that could be a little bit troublesome."

His fingers curled and the massive construct before them came to life. Energy surged through its core, the pulsing blue glow intensifying as it raised its massive blade.

"So I will need to kill you all now."

The towering machine moved. Its joints groaned as its heavy steps shook the ground beneath them.

Aerchon gripping his sword tightly before stepping forward. "I'll hold this thing off. Saeldir, start preparing the spell to get us out of here!"

He didn't wait for an answer. His instincts screamed at him that if no one slowed this behemoth down they wouldn't have enough time to escape.

Saeldir gave a sharp nod, immediately stepping back and drinking the last Magic potion he have then began his incantation.

"Arlyn, Vael, Sylra! keep them off me!" Saeldir ordered, already focusing his will into the spell.

Without hesitation, the three of them moved back and forming a protective barrier around him.

Vael nocked another arrow, eyes flicking between the enemy soldiers closing in. "We just have to keep him alive long enough, huh? No pressure."

Sylra smirked. "Try not to run out of arrows before we're done."

Arlyn spun his swords in his hands, watching as the metal soldiers began to surge forward again. "Stay sharp."

The battlefield erupted into chaos once more.

Aerchon charged at the massive construct, his sword flashing in the dark.

The construct reacted, swinging its energy blade with terrifying force. Sparks flew as Aerchon barely dodged, feeling the heat of the weapon singe the air near his face. He attack back, his sword biting into the machine's armor, but it barely made a dent.

"Damn it."

The construct retaliated with a backhand strike, forcing Aerchon to leap back. He needed to find a weak point. Or at least stood his ground before Saeldir ready.

Meanwhile, Vael loosed a flurry of his remaining arrows, each one aimed at the advancing soldiers. Some struck true and piercing their joints and disabling their movement, but there were too many. The enemy kept coming.

Sylra using the confusion to weave between them. Her daggers flashed as she dismantled enemy after enemy with swift precise strikes. Metal arms and heads fell to the ground, but the sheer number of them was overwhelming.

Arlyn fought just as fiercely, he cut through the machines with fluid and unrelenting attack. He stood directly in front of Saeldir ensuring no enemy got too close.

Behind them, Saeldir's spell was growing stronger. Runes formed in the air, glowing with intricate Magic runes as he chanted in his mind. The energy around him swirled like a storm, his power building toward the moment of release.

Aerchon grit his teeth as the massive construct swung its blade again, forcing him to parry. The impact sent him skidding backward but he dug his heels in refusing to fall. He just needed to buy more time.

The battlefield burned with flickering Magic and flashing steel. The only question left was whether they could hold out long enough to escape or not.
