I Planned a Su*cide Mission and Got Kicked Out of the Party

Chapter 41

It was an urgent time, but under Jenis’ insistence, Jeongjae took a three-day break to recuperate. This was because Jenis argued that if his stamina didn’t recover properly after excessive mana consumption, he wouldn’t be able to fight effectively in battle.

However, for Jenis, the more important reason was that she didn’t want the commoners to witness the unstable state of the baron, who was in an extreme state of excitement.

From a political standpoint, showing a strong lord in a fearful state could only heighten the apprehension of the commoners.

On a personal level, Jenis didn’t want her admired hero and mentor Jeongjae to appear pathetic in front of ordinary people.

Thus, while Jeongjae lay quietly in bed resting, she took the reins as the lord’s representative and began thorough preparations for war.

Fishing in the sea was completely halted, and small fishing vessels were requisitioned as military ships in preparation for any eventuality. However, after meticulously comparing the sizes of the tall ships Jeongjae had described and the state of the requisitioned fishing vessels, Jenis concluded that it was impossible to utilize the fishing boats for naval combat in any meaningful way.

In other words, as Jeongjae had said, if an enemy approached, they had to block them from the shore at all costs. With fishing suspended and livelihoods halted, all the commoners were mobilized to make barricades.

Fifty workers dug up the ground to set deep posts, while two hundred people wove many spear tips together to create barbed wire fences.

The coast was already packed with people like a summer beach, as they busily prepared to install obstacles against the enemy’s attacks.

Alongside this, Jenis moved swiftly, sending letters to the nearby nobility inquiring about the possibility of sending reinforcements in case of emergency.

Three days later, when Jeongjae finally got out of bed, all the replies had arrived, but there were no letters with content that would bring him joy.

“Duke Jeffrey can accommodate up to 1,000 refugees in case of emergency, but he cannot dispatch troops.”

“That’s quite a generous measure, but if there’s no need to evacuate, it’s meaningless.”

Jeongjae said as he draped his blue robe symbolizing a critical situation over himself. Jenis also put on the wizard’s robe she had received as a gift.

“Mackenzie, Julius, Patron… well, other families requested non-interference. Since the disarmament proposal hasn’t even been passed in the council, they said they can’t spare any soldiers.”

“We have no choice. I never expected anything in the first place. What about Harker?”

“My father… said he wishes that we could somehow defend it.”

“He didn’t tell you to return to Harker Count Territory, did he?”

“No. I thought he wanted me to stay and fight.”

“Then it’s fine. It seems Count Harker trusts that you and I can handle it. I know for sure that the Count cherishes you. If he thought I would lose, he would have told you to go back home.”

“Well, my father has a rather easy-going side, so he might have thought, ‘Even if we lose, you’ll probably manage to escape well.'”

“That’s not impossible. But it’s pointless to think negatively.”

Jeongjae looked much more at ease after the three days of rest. During her nightly visits to check on him, Jenis found out that he often suffered from nightmares and moaned in his sleep, but she didn’t let on that she was aware of it in front of him.

“However, it stings to think that the greatest favor is merely accommodating refugees. Are we truly going to have to fight alone?”

“I wish the Koesernis territory was nearby. If he understood the true meaning of mutual survival, he would surely have sent troops. He might even lead an expedition himself.”

“Mutual survival? What does that mean?”

“It means if the lips are gone, the teeth will be cold. Leaving an opponent alone in a situation where you might be the next target is foolish. Of course, I understand why the nobles can’t intervene right now… but at least Margaret is coming. It’s not a completely solitary situation.”

“Will the Eramenia army come? If they arrive in time, we could turn the 300 tall ships and the Kraken into fish food.”

“I’m not keen on eating such food and then catching large fish to eat.”

Jeongjae made a nonsensical joke. To his surprise, Jenis seemed to take his words seriously, lowering her head and falling into deep thought.

“Wait a moment. What will the local residents do if we actually sink the bodies of the beasts on the shore? If there are 8,000 corpses, just finding a way to deal with them would be a nightmare…”

“Like the Finns preparing to bury the bodies of Soviet soldiers. Well, I like that they are showing confidence in victory, but…”

Jeongjae muttered again with remarks that Jenis didn’t quite understand. Jenis managed to guess the meaning of his words and smiled as she nodded.

“Anyway, Jenis. It’s likely that Eramenia won’t send an army. It’s just too conspicuous. Moreover, if an army were going to come, I feel like Margaret would have mentioned it. Reflecting on the content of the letters, it seems Margaret has figured out that I’m supposed to be attacked… it’d be most pleasant if an army did come, but I can’t be sure. Let’s not bother announcing anything about the Elf reinforcements. If rumors get exaggerated and the residents’ disappointment grows, it would sap their morale even more.”

“So, it doesn’t mean there’s no possibility of the Eramenia army coming?”

“It’s not that there isn’t. If we think about it that way, suddenly there could also be a possibility that the Empire’s legion will come to protect us. Just as there’s also a chance that the Demon King’s Army could switch their strategy and attack us with a Dragon Legion. Speculation is pointless. The only thing meaningful in this moment is Margaret. It’s best not to expect any other forces to bolster our strength.”

Jeongjae’s mental state seemed to have returned to something more normal, yet Jenis felt a strange discord in the way Jeongjae treated her.

Jenis took a hop forward to match Jeongjae’s gaze. Jeongjae naturally stepped back, turning his head away.

“Professor, am I bothering you?”

“Huh? Me? Do I have a reason to bother you?”

“Please don’t worry too much, professor. Really.”
