Chapter 0
Jeongjae couldn’t hide his genuine bewilderment. This was not the reaction he had anticipated. No, it was far from what he had expected.
Sure, it was a suggestion that could sound foolish. But Jeongjae never thought that Princess Margaret would react so vehemently.
The Elven Princess, the rightful heir of the arrogant and meticulous forest tribe, was shaking and glaring at him with tears in her eyes as she stood before the wizard from another world.
“Margaret, calm down. What I mean is, it’s just a suggestion worth considering. I didn’t come to a definite conclusion.”
Jeongjae’s attempt fell flat. The elf, clenching her fists as if ready to smash the wizard with her bow, stared at the scroll laid on the table.
“So, you’re saying we should cast a powerful spell that could destroy your soul, create a huge explosion at the gathering place of the Demon King’s high-ranking officials, and turn the tide of battle? Is that right?”
Margaret reconfirmed a fact she had checked multiple times. Jeongjae scratched his head with an awkward smile.
“The situation is tough, you know. I’ve been trying to find a non-extreme way to contribute in the war, but there aren’t many better options. If this operation succeeds, a lot will change. Think about it calmly.”
“Calmly? Calmly? You want me to be calm?”
The Fairy Lord shouted. Jeongjae was taken aback and instinctively covered his face with both hands, retreating a step. Margaret, unable to contain her rage, slammed her fist on the table and began to speak in a surprisingly composed voice.
“Alright, let’s assess this calmly. Certainly, your life would be more valuable if we execute this operation than if we keep dragging out this stagnant back-and-forth. In this plan, the Demon King’s army would lose four commanders or at least suffer incapacitating injuries. If such a level of power is guaranteed, the military value is clear.”
“Right? In the end, one life could save thousands, no, tens of thousands. I’m not trying to look heroic; that’s just the reality.”
“But, the one thing I can’t forgive, even if I think calmly, is just one.”
“What is it…?”
Jeongjae cautiously asked. Many hypotheses flashed through his mind. Was she worried about coordinate magic? If the tracking and coordinate magic malfunctioned and the explosion occurred far from the place where the Demon King’s commanders were gathering, Jeongjae could die meaninglessly.
Or maybe she was dissatisfied with the fact that he hadn’t considered the possibility of innocent people getting caught in the explosion? That was possible. The noble Princess Margaret, proud and haughty as an elf, didn’t particularly like humans, but she was quite enraged when innocent civilians were harmed.
If it wasn’t that, perhaps she was angry because the impact of this magic on the environment and forest hadn’t been considered at all? Of course, there could be counterarguments. This spell would surely target only the gathering of the Demon King’s army, and its mana circuits were meticulously designed to minimize the chances of collateral damage…
“Why… why me?”
This was an unexpected critique that left Jeongjae at a loss for words. Regardless, Margaret continued to speak with a growl in her voice.
“It’s because you were the first person to present this magic… why specifically… me?”
“Even if you question why me, you know the answer. I thought you would understand. As the noble Elven Princess, you’re proficient in mana theory and would know what kind of assistance was needed…”
“So, you mean you trust my abilities. Yes, I’d like to think so too. You trust my skills, my character, and that’s why you told me about this secret mission first. I want to believe that…”
Suddenly, Margaret’s words stopped. Jeongjae felt an ominous energy rising.
Then came another thud, thud, thud. This time it was the sound of thick tears dropping from the Fairy Lord.
“I… I assumed that because of my usual behavior, you think I despise you, that I see you as some lowly insect… that I would gladly accept this operation based on the premise of your death… I can’t do anything but think…”
There was something subtly poignant about her words. Of course, Jeongjae didn’t view Margaret as a worthless human being.
But Margaret was noble enough and rational enough to believe that Jeongjae would agree to the plan after weighing the countless lives he could save against his own.
“Hey, that’s not it. I knew you’d have reservations. I feel sorry about that. But I also know that you’re wise, and I believe you’ll always make the right choice, so…”
“So, you expected me to make a wise judgment. That’s it. But you don’t know something. There are moments when even a ruler like me cannot make a rational decision. Do you know what that is?”
“Well…”
Under the pressure of Margaret’s forceful demeanor, Jeongjae couldn’t find the right words to respond.
The elf stepped closer to the wizard and gently tapped his cheek with her finger.
“You have no idea what I think of you. Perhaps with others, it wouldn’t matter, but you should never have shown me such a pathetic plan.”
Margaret lifted the meticulously crafted scroll Jeongjae had worked on and began to tear it to shreds in front of his eyes. Seeing Jeongjae not panicking at all made Margaret’s eyes flash with intensity.
“Well, this is a copy anyway; there should be an original. But it doesn’t matter. I, Princess Margaret, rightful heir of Eramenia, will ensure that you never use this magic.”
Thus, Jeongjae’s plan derailed right from the beginning, in a way he never could have anticipated.
