chapter 7
7. Survival rule number one: don’t eat anything (1)
If you make even one mistake, you will die.
It was a warning engraved in my madly pounding heart.
I’m not stupid enough to ignore that warning. I sprinted down the hill and immediately took out a shovel.
I can’t run away. I didn’t know what catastrophe would happen if that unknown enemy entered deep into my territory.
What’s more, the opponent is a monster who slaughtered all the bears head-on. The pure power must be stronger than the head of the snake heads. Head-to-head confrontation has no chance of winning. I knew my fountain well.
It is an opponent that cannot be defeated in a head-to-head confrontation.
As always.
However, since when did human beings win the fight against beasts in a head-to-head confrontation? If quality is lacking, quantity is sufficient. If head-to-head confrontation is impossible, traps are dug. If you are naked, you are a human being who at least lifts a rock.
So, for now, getting rid of him is the priority. If possible, it’s better to lead them towards snakes or dungeons.
Until the environment is ready to deal with, you have to ostracize them.
If I didn’t get rid of it, in the worst case, not only me but also Karina could face a terrible end.
Such a future is a specification. Even if I die, I must leave the island and die.
Even Robinson Crusoe returned to his hometown and died!
“Somehow, I’ve been lucky these days…”
In case the opponent’s sense of smell was good, I stabbed a nearby corpse and made the blood flow nearby, then I immediately put the shovel on the floor.
The soft ground was dug without mercy by my shovel.
Some might say this is bullsh*t, but it was for the best. My shovel had reached its peak in 10 years, and I was able to dig the land faster than anyone else. Enough to make a hole that at least one person could easily fit into.
I can’t be sure that I’ll survive just by making a hole and going in, but it’s not like I’ve been through a crisis like this once or twice, so it’s not like I thoughtlessly sold my spot. Because this was my way of survival.
“Production.”
After entering the hole, I immediately covered the open ceiling with my skills. From the outside, it looked like the same floor, but from the inside, it was a form with a sturdy block inserted into the entrance. Disguised as if it were a perfectly fine dirt floor, I shortened the length of my shovel and muttered as I stuck it into the dirt wall right in front of me.
“Production.”
As soon as I finished speaking, the soil in front of me began to compact. As the soil was compressed and became a thin plate and began to be embedded in the soil, the space naturally widened. I pulled a bear bone out of my pocket as I watched the dark passageway begin to build.
It was moderately processed for ease of use.
“Production.”
Put the bones that have become sharp stakes under the ceiling. Even if you find a hole, you will be injured. It’s a shallow ploy to slow down the pursuit even a little bit, but it wasn’t completely ineffective unless the snakes were there.
“I wish I could get away with this.”
As long as I hide in the ground, you won’t find me right away. In the meantime, we need to come up with a solution. I sprinkled the entire entrance with a powder that numbs the sense of smell and tickles the skin.
It was an additional measure. Even if you can’t kill it, it will be painful for a while.
I moved through the tunnel created by the skill.
It’s tiring to use a lot of skills like this, but it’s still better than dying. Normally, you wouldn’t even think of moving underground.
For now, try to bully them… If that fails, lead them to the snakes’ territory or dungeon as much as possible, and then bully them. Well, thinking is easy.
The question is whether I can outrun that mysterious enemy, and how strong that enemy is.
What if, if… If it’s enough to annihilate the cubs of snakes, it’s like blowing your nose without touching it, but on the other hand, the problem is that it can wipe out my territory as well.
In the end, the best course of action is to either catch him in the bears’ territory, or get him out of the way…Would that work?
I’m not an elephant, but I swallowed my saliva as I felt the vibration of the ground as I walked. You probably won’t be able to find my location right away. I thought of the items in my pocket as I moved in the opposite direction of the vibration.
A few hides and what few bones are left. Also, mushroom powder used for various purposes and herbs for hemostasis in case you don’t know… I’ll bring a little more.
No matter how much I did, I didn’t know that monster scabs would pop out to wipe out all the bears at once. It was something that I had taken care of to some extent…
“…Is this far enough?”
Vibration has decreased a lot. I hit the ceiling and activated the skill.
“Production.”
A plausible trapdoor appeared above my head. I carefully opened the door and stuck my head out. It is a forest. Due to the dense trees, it was difficult to determine the exact location, but thanks to the cave at the end of my field of view, I was able to confirm that I had come to the right place.
You got it right.
This was the point where the three realms collided. The most difficult to move with each other.
Ah, it wouldn’t be if the snakes noticed that the bears were being slaughtered right now.
Maybe you already noticed. It’s just that the snakes don’t know, because the boss was a cunning guy with a pretty cool head. If you’ve noticed, you’re probably gathering information on a new enemy by now.
“I don’t think I’ve caught up…”
The vibration is no longer felt. Fortunately, it seemed that they had succeeded in escaping unharmed. Maybe he’s been looking for me around the hill for a while. You will be able to earn time for a while.
We need to deal with him before he rampages further.
I looked in the direction of the dungeon. I saw a dungeon sitting on the ground with its mouth open. Looking at the broken bones scattered around the dungeon, it seems that snake heads cleaned the dungeon.
“Do snakes take care of themselves?”
Then I should take care of myself properly. At this stage, let’s put off enticing towards the snakes. In the worst case, it could end up being cut together. We’re still hoping for both of them to die, but information on the new enemy is still poor. Now it’s time to gather information.
I listened to the sounds around me and moved toward my territory. Since there is a sachet, snakes won’t be able to approach it easily. So, I was able to return while being wary of the approach of an unknown invader.
Fortunately, all I could hear before entering my territory were angry shouts and earth-shattering explosions.
Looks like you stepped on the right trap.
Still, I think I can buy some time.
It seemed that my complicated mind was relieved a little by the good news.
Let’s go back and deliver the news to Karina. The one who evacuates her first will make it easier for her to fight.
And I need to pack some more supplies for the fight.
I looked up at the sky, which was starting to get darker, busily planning a plan in my head.
—————————————-
‘…You’re late. It’s not like something happened, right?’
Stirring the greenish soup with her ladle, Carina looked at the door that showed no signs of opening.
Her benefactor, John, showed no sign of returning, even though the day was slowly going down.
“I hope you come back unharmed…”
If something happens to him, he has no one to turn to anymore. Little by little she learned her survival knowledge from Johann, but compared to him, she was barely able to take her first steps. If she was left alone, she would eventually become her corpse, praying with her hands clasped together.
She trembled as she recalled the future of treating her corpse as a holy relic and stuffing it into her temple. The pope was a man who could do such a thing if he could only attract believers.
Her face darkened at the thought of the greedy pope.
Desperately shaking her head to get rid of the bad memories of her temple, she decided to focus more on caring for her lifesaver, Johann Quartz. It was a flow of thoughts she couldn’t even understand herself, but she rationalized herself that her original mind was like that.
‘I want to go out and look for it, but Mr. Yohan told me not to wander around…’
Karina immediately gave up her mind to find John. He couldn’t even run because his body hadn’t fully recovered yet, so it was obvious that he would become a burden if he went out. In her worst case, she could have lost her way and John had to find her.
As someone who had been escorted by her for a long time, she knew how annoying it was.
‘I’m still worried. I really hope nothing happened…’
Karina’s face darkened with her pensiveness. But she didn’t even notice the worried look on her face. She had never had such a strange relationship with her.
In her world, there was only Lenny who always stood by her side, some priests, and high-ranking nobles and their children.
A relationship where you have no choice but to wear masks and have pretentious conversations.
Karina always wanted to get out of that relationship. Like kids my age, we share idle chatter, go out to play, and sometimes fight… I don’t want to live like a bird trapped in a cage. Even if everyone in her wants her like she is.
It wasn’t that she didn’t really believe in Calon, but she was a girl who hadn’t even reached adulthood yet. She used to be swayed by little temptations.
If the pope had known, he would have thought of blaspheming, but who would scold him for thinking he was blasphemous on an uninhabited island with only two people and a monster? At best, your conscience pokes your finger a few times.
She hadn’t noticed yet that the leash around Karina’s neck was starting to come loose little by little.
‘I want to get well soon so I can help John.’
At least for now, that was the only thought. Entering her academy was something special for her, but since she was trapped on a deserted island anyway, her academy was something she could only go to in her dreams.
So now I pray for the safe return of Johann Quartz.
That was the most important thing.
‘Dear Calon. Please bless John so that he can return safely…’
While she was praying out of time in front of her pot, the faint sound of her footsteps was heard.
It was a familiar rhythm.
A light fell on her dark face. With her heart racing somehow, she got up from her seat and walked towards her door.
Kiik-
The door swung open before she could reach her hand for the doorknob.
Karina’s gaze naturally went up. The head of the person she was waiting for was a little higher than hers.
“Have you been?”
A soft voice reached him through the warm air.
He rolled her eyes awkwardly at seeing her off, then opened her mouth with a nod of her head.
“…I’ve been.”
