chapter 12
12. Survival Rule 2: Water Knows the Answer(1)
Do you know what the three most important things about a deserted island are?
Water, food, and housing.
Without these three things, an old man who cannot walk on his own or a human who can beat a bear with his bare hands if he sets his mind will die fairly.
Without water, they die of dehydration in three days.
If you can’t eat food, you will die within a month.
If you do not have a place to live, you are exposed to rain and wind or tropical nights and are more likely to get sick.
Therefore, these three things are the most important things in life on an uninhabited island.
If these 3 things aren’t met, it’s safe, and life takes a countdown of days. That’s why I always put a lot of effort into securing three things stably.
I made a dwelling with skills, made traps and walls to prevent monsters from entering the dwelling, and made a hideout in case of an unexpected situation. Food is supplied by catching fish on the beach and rabbits in the forest, and catching caterpillars to supplement nutrition.
And the water…
I used to use a well dug a few years ago.
It was a well created after digging through the forest for a long time to find out where the underground water was. Groundwater was harder to find than I thought. You may have to dig deep into the ground. Where did you find it though?
Until wells were built, drinking water was replenished by boiling seawater to obtain salt and water together. Of course, I couldn’t even wash properly at the time. Drinking water is so precious that you only use it for washing? If anything, it’s better to just wash it with seawater. Although I wasn’t even a cabbage, and being pickled in salt water wasn’t very pleasant.
Anyway, I was on my way to the well early in the morning to fetch water.
But that’s it.
Why is well water purple?
Not ocher, not yellow, not purple? The well water has changed to a color that looks like you’ll be f*cked if you drink it just by looking at it?
“These f*cking bastards…”
These dogs are f*cking. Who would do this in case they weren’t snake babies? I threw the two-headed man’s corpse, which had been caught in the basket, on the ground. It feels very like sh*t.
You really want to see the end, right?
Poison the well?
Is the hydra pup really going to make a life-and-death decision with me?
In the near future, I will turn all the snake babies into snake meat jerky. Let’s see if Lenny gets better after being beaten by bears. I’ll tie up the baby snake and cook the snake meat in front of it!
“…Huh, I need to calm down for now. We need to secure water again.”
First of all, we need to secure drinking water. I placed the planks roughly over the well and picked up the shovel leaning against the porch. With that said, it’s time to bring back the traditional rehydration method. Before that, let’s talk about it.
I opened the door and looked at Lenny lying on her bed, unconscious, and Karina, who was nursing her.
“The snakes poisoned the well.”
“Yes? Poison?”
Karina’s surprised, round eyes are cute…But this isn’t it. I continued talking, trying to stay as calm as possible.
“Don’t go to the well because you won’t be able to use it for a while.”
“Then the water…”
“I will come to rescue you. You have to save water for a while, so it’s better to be careful about washing.”
“Okay. Then go.”
I left the house while being sent off by a pensive Carina. Before going, I took a suitable basket and walked to the beach. Even if you poison the well, it will neutralize itself over time. In the meantime, sea water must be distilled to obtain drinking water.
This is an annoying method.
But this is one of the surest ways to get drinking water on this island. If you don’t like that, digging another well is the answer… But I can’t keep the well for 24 hours, so if you secretly release the poison from digging again, it’s meaningless.
“I never thought I would do this again…”
I can’t figure out how much to distill. Not one, but three. You have to scoop out the seawater four or five times into a basin to feed three people. Leni, she hasn’t opened her eyes yet, so she consumes less water… But anyway, the more water the better. After all, you need water to maintain minimal cleanliness.
“A shipwreck… no.”
The beach is clean. The remains of a shipwreck stuck in a corner of the beach had, as always, been swept away by the waves. Originally, it would be normal for it to stay stuck there for 10,000 years before it was completely removed, but this was normal on this island. I don’t know the exact reason.
Since it is a world within a game, it must be a game-like reason. It eats up a lot of resources and disappears after a certain amount of time. It’s like a common limited event. There are several possibilities, but there is no evidence, so they are all speculation.
I don’t know if knowing that would change anything.
If we can’t get water right now, we’ll all be dehydrated and the game will be over.
“How good would it be if all of this was drinkable water…”
It’s so blue and transparent, but if you drink it, you’ll die. Why do you have no dreams or hopes? There is so much water, but the fact that it is a rice cake in the picture is really brutal.
…If you think about it, at the beginning of the drift, I almost died because I was thirsty and drank some seawater. If I hadn’t been lucky enough to pick up a juicy fruit, I would have died of dehydration. I think I learned it in old science class. What, osmosis? Anyway, did you say that such a phenomenon occurs and rather deprives you of moisture? Seeing that it reminded me of the science class I used to sleep in every day when it was time to die, I was afraid of a kaleidoscope.
After that, I have to think about it and move quickly. I don’t have much time.
Distilling seawater to make drinkable water was a time-consuming task. Even if you start from now, you should be able to spend a few hours comfortably. Even so, it was a pity that there was little water that could actually be obtained. However, since the well water was contaminated, this was the fastest way to get drinking water.
I made another bucket out of a nearby tree and filled it with seawater. Clear water glistens brown. Oh, thirsty. I want to drink right now. However, I am the one who knows for sure that if I drink it, I will die from the osmotic phenomenon. Have to be patient
Arriving in front of the house with a bucket of water in both hands, the first thing I did was make an oven. A small stove that can hold about one pot and boil. I made a fire pit by stacking bricks, and made a pedestal about 50cm away.
It was the foundation needed to make the distiller that we will do from now on.
“John. What are you doing?”
“Integer.”
“Essence…?”
As I started making a device for purifying seawater, Karina asked me with her puzzled face. Well, is there anything like this to be seen in society? In the first place, there is no need to get water so hard. Because there are infinite ways to supply water on land. Unless it is a desert area, there is no shortage of water than here.
Anyway, the eyes on my back are a bit burdensome.
It was awkward to work on something in front of someone. Should I say it’s the feeling when a teacher from my school days calls me and makes a presentation? All the kids stare, and in the meantime, I have to make a presentation because of my performance evaluation score. Now it is a faded memory.
After completing the mini stove, I brought a large pot I hadn’t used at home, filled it with water, and put a lid with a hole in the middle on top.
The reason why there is a hole is that it is a hole through which steam passes. I’m going to get water by distillation, so I’ll have to make a place for the steam to go out. I’ll have to block it so it can’t escape anywhere else.
“Production.”
I made the board into a long cylinder and placed the cylinder right in front of the hole and the other side on the pedestal. Then, meticulously seal the periphery of the cylinder and the gaps with good quality soil. This will prevent the steam from escaping.
After that, it was a part where I had to use the skill again.
“Production.”
On top of the pedestal, there is a bucket of water illuminated by dirt. It was a water container made in the shape of a cylinder placed on it.
The basic work is over.
I took a new bucket and set it down just below the end of the cylinder.
How long have you been trying to make this? I poured the rest of the seawater into a bucket on a pedestal and lit the fire.
Big. My skills aren’t dead yet. I told you to go through trial and error to make this. Just thinking about it brings tears to my eyes. It’s good that I came up with the distillation method while suffering from thirst while living sucking dew from leaves, not a fairy, but I didn’t know how to do it, so I solved it with effort.
A few years later, I remembered how to make a well and threw it all away.
“It’s amazing…”
“If you wait a few hours, water will fill up in this bucket.”
Although the quantity will never be large. The principle that the water in the pot boils and becomes steam, and it follows the cylinder and cools down by the cold seawater on the pedestal, becoming liquid again and falling. It was a similar principle to making distilled spirits, but in the wild, it was a method that was difficult to use unless it was easy to make with skills like me.
It was not an easy task to make everything from pots to water bottles.
Even the efficiency is not good.
No matter how cold water is used to cool it down, about half of the water in the pot will be lost. After all, the amount of water obtained by boiling an entire pot is at most two cups.
In other words, it is a temporary measure.
So you should go straight to the next plan, right?
“Karina. Be on guard.”
“Yes?”
“I have a place to go.”
Snakes, if you mess with the water, then I’ll mess with the water too.
Let’s see who wins, you bastards.
It’s war!
