I Married the Beautiful Female Protagonist In Order To Survive

chapter 39

39. Your Protagonist Returns!

The script’s guidance, coupled with Kefir’s protagonist aura’s protection, ensured that we encountered no danger on our way back to the evening party. After what had just transpired, Kefir clearly had no desire to stay at the party. After coldly rejecting every man’s invitation with her icy demeanor, she quietly pulled me away to leave early.

We hurried home by carriage, then I found an excuse to send away Nell, who was waiting for us, and Kefir dragged me to her own bedroom.

The fragrance that greeted us in the room was unmistakably Kefir’s; despite being the true protagonist of the script, her room was unexpectedly filled with the innocence and naivety of a young girl. I even spotted several literary works by the elfin beauty writer, Miss Tange Kokode.

But before I could take a closer look, Kefir entered the room, immediately locked the door, and approached me with a stern face, slightly lifting her head.

“Ogilid, based on your next answer, I’ll decide whether to throw you in the dungeon or send you to the guillotine tomorrow. What exactly did you prophesy today that made you bold enough to break into the princess’s chamber again!?”

I clenched my fist.

Being brought to her bedroom for a private talk meant that Kefir’s earlier threat was just to scare me. Nevertheless, given Kefir’s protagonist nature, if I truly answered with something like “I wanted to raid at night,” I’d probably be thrown out to die on the streets tonight.

Fortunately, I had nothing to feel guilty about this time.

“Kefir.”

I met her gaze.

“I prophesied something there: during tomorrow’s duel, Louise XXIII will cheat, taking drugs to forcibly enhance her performance.”

Kefir’s eyes widened slightly, then she let out a bitter laugh. “I thought it was something serious. I’m aware of it; my father had already hinted it to me. Of course, given Louise XXIII’s bad reputation, I wouldn’t find it strange.”

“It’s not just that!” I pressed down on Kefir’s shoulders.

“I knew about her drug use from the start, but what I prophesied this time is: she’s taken something even more potent, and her performance in tomorrow’s duel might…”

I paused, swallowing the words “you might lose” back down. Kefir is the protagonist, my pillar of support. As a villain, how could I burden the protagonist with negative energy and risk my life?

“It will be on par with yours. Moreover, this incident has the queen’s tacit approval.”

Kefir looked at me in surprise, not pushing away my hands for a moment.

“…The queen, no, Ogilid, so you went to the princess’s chamber tonight for this? Couldn’t your prophecy have revealed it directly?”

“Prophecies depend on the situation, and this time, I only used the prophecy to sneak into the chamber. The rest, I overheard based on my suspicions, from the queen and Louise XXIII, Kefir. Unfortunately, I don’t have any magical tools to record it, so I can only hope you believe me.”

“…”

Kefir stood frozen, staring blankly at me.

Hmm, as a favored daughter of heaven, she would naturally be shocked and nervous upon hearing such news, even if Kefir is the protagonist.

But no worries, don’t be afraid. And why? Because, Kefir, your leg accessory—me, I’m someone with the script in hand!

“To be honest, I’m worried too, but now that we’re both safely back, there’s no problem. Tomorrow, just announce Louise XXIII’s cheating before the duel starts, and you can win without lifting a finger.”

This was the safest course of action based on the script. How could a dragon rider lose face? Ha, a minor villain thinking to compete with the protagonist?

Kefir suddenly snapped out of her daze, and I thought she’d be overjoyed, hopping and skipping around. At the very least, I expected her to strike an ice queen pose and flick her hair with a “Not bad” comment. But instead…

She looked at me with incredulous eyes, followed by a girlish punch to my chest, her voice tinged with a maiden’s timbre.

“Ogilid, are you out of your mind!? The palace is full of hidden masters; even the old man serving tea could kill you with one hand. And you ran to Princess Wang’s chamber under these circumstances? Are you seeking death!!?”

“Uh, I was prepared for that. If I were exposed, I’d just reveal myself as the charlatan Ogilid lurking by your side, so as not to implicate you…”

“Idiot! I’m not talking about your identity…”

“And hey, I came back safe and sound, haha~ Tomorrow’s in the bag!”

Kefir, still somewhat anxious, grabbed the front of my shirt, as if she was holding back something she wanted to say.

No worries, no need for thanks. Who else would I cling to if not your coattails? Always relying on your protagonist’s halo, Kefir, I should repay you with the script occasionally, to ensure your lead role is secure.

Don’t ask. If you do, it’s Lei Feng, the red scarf, and a double win.

At the moment Kefir’s little fist struck my chest, a peculiar smile appeared on her face.

“Huff~ huff huff… you charlatan.”

She seemed happy, but her voice carried a hint of a sob.

“Such an idiot.”

“The wicked charlatan Ogilid, it’s only through prophecies that you can do things ordinary people wouldn’t dare dream of, Kefir.”

Despite saying so, Kefir’s expression seemed a bit odd. I did this just to cling to your fair legs; please don’t misconstrue my actions into something bizarre~

When I looked down, the quirky yet endearing expression on Kefir’s face had vanished.

Raising her head, she displayed a confidence more befitting of a “protagonist” than ever before.

Her hand slowly loosened from my chest, but at the last moment before pulling away, she clutched a corner of my shirt.

“You really didn’t have to go to such lengths for me…”

“Kefir?”

Shaking her head, Kefir finally stopped her quiet muttering.

“As for the cheating of Louis XXIII, it’s okay if we don’t talk about it tomorrow.”

“What!?”

You protagonists always love to court death… no, what protagonists do can’t be called courting death, it’s called “adventure,” right?

“So, Ogilid, facing a baseless cheater, do you think I’ll lose?”

Without waiting for my answer, Kefir had already given hers.

The burning gaze she turned on me made my heart flutter.

“I wouldn’t have before, and I certainly won’t now. Don’t believe me? Predict again and see?”
