I Married a Sick Husband

Vol. 2 Chapter 30

“How discourteous of you, Sir Felix.”

It was Meredith who opened her mouth first. She rebuked Felix with a stern face.

“It’s a dinner prepared by the Empress Dowager, not anyone else.”

“I understand what you mean.”

Felix didn’t back down.

“But a rule is a rule.”

“Sir Felix!”

“Calm down, Empress.”

Theodore, who had been silent, intervened.

“Because Sir Felix has only fulfilled his duty.”

“But…”

Soon, Theodore’s gaze turned to Blair.

She was quivering with her mouth closed.

As if this situation was very insulting.

Of course, it must have been a very insulting situation for Blair.

Because she was being suspected of poisoning the emperor.

Not anyone else, but the official emperor’s mother.

“Of course, I believe in the Empress Dowager.”

“…..”

“My attendant is unusual.”

The remark was an indication.

This situation was, in fact, a problem that would be resolved quickly if a decision was made.

In other words, it was an indirect expression of not believing in Blair.

Blair bit her lips and opened her mouth.

“……Go ahead, Your Majesty.”

“…….”

“Yeah, you have to do that.”

Blair added, straightening her back.

“That’s the rule.”

“…..”

“Even if it was a dinner prepared by the empress, not me, you would have done so. Right?

“…Of course, your highness.”

“This is food for Your Majesty, not anyone else.”

Blair stared at Felix, who was standing behind him and said.

“Make sure you look closely.”

“Of course, your highness.”

Soon after, the maids of the Empress Dowager Palace came out one by one and began to take out the food on the table.

Blair looked at him with an uncomfortable visage during the testing.

Meredith had a restless face, and Theodore was expressionless.

A cold silence that seemed to freeze everyone wrapped around the dining hall.

Then at some point.

-Clink!

An unheard noise of something falling.

Naturally, everyone’s attention was focused in the direction of the sound.

“W-why is this…”

A maid stood next to Theodore with a trembling look.

The problem was at her feet.

The silver rod, which turned black with fish soup on it, had fallen.

It was evident that food contained poison.

“Your Majesty…”

Felix looked at Theodore with an astonished face.

In an instant, the atmosphere inside the dining hall turned ugly.

The empress dowager tried to poison the emperor.

It was obvious what would happen to Empress Dowager if this fact became known.

Blair’s complexion turned white.

This was an unexpected situation.

She was innocent and never messed with anything.

I’m not an idiot, and would I kill the emperor at the dinner I prepared?

If I was trying to get things done, I would have done it more secretly.

For Blair, this situation was simply terrifying.

“How did this happen?”

It was Felix’s voice.

“You have to explain it, your highness Empress Dowager.”

He stared at Blair with a fierce look.

Blair opened her mouth with a puzzled face.

“…I don’t know.”

“The silver rod turned black.”

Felix pointed out the current situation.

“It means it’s poisoned”

He slowly bowed down and picked up the silver rod that the maid had dropped.

And he brought it in front of Blair’s eyes and asked.

“Are you still going to act like you’re trying to deny it?”

“I…!”

“Stop it, Sir Felix.”

It was the voice of Meredith.

Everyone’s eyes were on the empress.

Meredith opened her mouth with a stiff face.

“Her Highness couldn’t have harbored such a desire.”

“His Majesty, this is not a situation that can be resolved with such words.”

Felix insisted with a frown on his forehead.

“This is clear evidence of an attempt to poison. Can’t you believe it even when you see it with your own eyes?”

“Don’t be rash, Sir Felix.”

Like everyone else, Meredith seemed very surprised by the situation.

However, she tried to speak in a calm voice.

“This is not the fault of her highness.”

“Your Majesty.”

“I’ll show you the evidence.”

Along with the words, Meredith pulled out a piece of jewelry that was adorned on her head.

It was a silver ornament with a pointed tip.

Then, without hesitation, she dipped it into the soup in front of her.

“……”

After a while, there was also an ornament in Meredith’s hand that turned black.

Everyone was embarrassed once again when they saw that.

Soon, Felix calmly presented another hypothesis.

“Her Highness may have poisoned both of your Majesty’s food.”

“Then we can test it one more time.”

Meredith even pulled out the last accessory that was on her head.

And approached Blair’s side, and this time again, she dipped it in her soup bowl.

“…….”

Blair looked at Meredith with a surprised face, as if he didn’t understand what was going on.

Meredith made eye contact with Blair, and she smiled as if not to worry.

Moments later, Meredith raised her hand.

“Am I right?”

The same result as before was obtained.

“Is the Empress Dowager trying to harm herself?”

Everyone looked at Meredith in amazement.

How the hell did this happen?

“After a while, even if you put the same silver rod in, you’ll get a different result than now. The color of silver won’t change.”

“Your Majesty, what are you talking about…”

“When you dip silver in hot fish soup, the color changes. This is just a natural phenomenon. It’s not a conspiracy by her highness.”

“…….”

“Sir Felix, can we now cast away any doubts about Her Highness the Empress Dowager?”

“……. Of course, your Majesty.”

“Apologize to her highness.”

Felix quickly obeyed Meredith.

“I apologize, your highness. I have shown great discourtesy.”

“…It’s okay.”

Blair still looked surprised.

She replied with her trembling lips.

“I’m glad nothing happened.”

But the voice that spoke clearly showed signs of discomfort.

“Your Highness.”

At that time, Theodore, who was watching the situation silently, spoke out.

“Sir Felix was just doing his job.”

“……“

“It must have been unpleasant enough, but please forgive me.”

“…Your Majesty.”

“Didn’t a lot of unsavory things happen at the central palace?”

“…Of course, it has.”

Listening to the conversation, it seemed that something similar had happened several times before.

“No way. You met an assassin on the first night of your marriage.”

Meredith moistened her lips as if she knew it.

“Of course, it was unpleasant, but your safety is more important than anything else.”

“…….”

“I can understand. I got an apology, but I am just disconcerted.”

Blair then looked at Meredith.

“If it wasn’t for my daughter-in-law, I would have been in a lot of trouble.”

“…..”

“Thank you, dear.”

“You’re welcome, your highness.”

Meredith smiled faintly and opened her mouth.

“I know better than anyone else that your Highness would never commit such a thing.”

“…….”

“I just acted according to my beliefs. So there is no need to thank me.”

Meredith said politely.

“However, it would be nice if you could ease your mind about the current situation. I don’t want the dinner to end in discord.”

“…If that’s what you want.”

Blair nodded her head, trying to hide her nervousness.

“Let’s move on amicably today. Anyway, it ended without any problems.”

“Thank you for your generosity.” Meredith smiled and changed the atmosphere.

“Now that the trouble is cleared, let’s all start the dinner. Let’s bring out a new soup.”

* * *

The dinner ended without anything happening.

Although the incident in the beginning almost turned into a catastrophic event that shook the empire, there was no need to bring it up again because it ended in a blink.

Meredith was truly delighted with the peaceful ending.

“Thank you for inviting me today, your highness.”

“I’m delighted that you came.”

While saying goodbye, Blair saw off Meredith with an elegant smile.

“See you tomorrow. You must be tired.”

“Yes, your highness. You must have been surprised today, but please rest well.”

“Yes, you too.”

The two parted after affectionately hugging each other.

Meredith could be relieved only after she had completely parted from the Empress Dowager.

“Haa…”

Meredith, in the carriage, sighed with a tired look.

“It was truly a long dinner.”

It was probably something I will never forget for the rest of my life.
