Chapter 40: Chapter 40: The Mysterious Girl

Feng Qi's understanding of the world within the Dream Realm was still limited.

From the data in the Star City Shelter database, he knew that 1500 years later, the world had been completely overtaken by domain fields.

As for what the world had become under the domain fields' influence, he couldn't be sure.

The only thing he could confidently deduce was that there were no living humans left.

Now, as the icy cold sensation from his left arm intensified, Feng Qi couldn't remain calm.

At that moment, a flash of lightning streaked across the sky, briefly illuminating the room.

In the instant of light, he saw the thin figure beside him clearly.

It looked very much like a human child, about three or four years old. She had long eyelashes framing a pair of large eyes, her delicate features giving her an almost doll-like appearance. However, her gray-white pupils made her look strangely vacant and lifeless.

What really caught his attention, though, was the fractured rune crystal embedded into the girl's left arm.

A domain creature? A rune-enhanced human?

From appearance alone, he couldn't tell whether the girl was a domain creature or human.

But he leaned more toward her being a domain creature.

After all, according to the records in Star City Shelter, human civilization had already perished. Moreover, the girl had no body heat—her entire frame felt cold and lifeless, almost like a… corpse.

[It might really be a ghost!]

Hearing the narrator's ominous comment, Feng Qi couldn't help but feel his hair stand on end.

Within domain fields, anything was possible.

Some specialized domain fields operated completely outside the known laws of nature.

For example, some domain fields had gravity several times that of Earth, while others had gravity barely a tenth of Earth's. There were even fields where sentient beings existed purely in consciousness, with no physical form, making them completely immune to physical attacks.

Feng Qi vividly recalled a class where Wang Jinsheng had described a domain field called the "Yin-Yang Domain Field".

The alternating four-hour cycles of extreme heat and freezing cold in the Yin-Yang Domain Field created a hellish environment. Even the strongest cultivators could not survive for long.

To destroy this field, humanity had paid a heavy price, ultimately shattering the domain's "spatial core" at its center.

And in this Dream Realm, a world entirely covered by domain fields, it wasn't out of the question for bizarre creatures like "ghosts" to exist.

With that thought, Feng Qi carefully shifted a little to the right.

The little girl followed, inching closer to him and pressing herself firmly against his arm.

"I… I'm scared," the girl said softly, her voice tender and childlike.

"I'm more scared than you!" Feng Qi couldn't stop himself from retorting.

The demonic hound could still be outside, so he didn't dare act recklessly. Despite the little girl's persistent clinging, he tried his best to keep some distance.

But clearly, the girl had no intention of letting him go. Every time he moved, she followed—her small frame clinging to him like a shadow.

As time passed, the thunder outside gradually subsided, the dark clouds dispersed, and the crimson light of the blood moon once again bathed the land, restoring the world's color.

When he looked down, he noticed that the girl had somehow fallen asleep, still clutching his left arm.

Just as Feng Qi began to try to free himself, the girl's eyes suddenly opened.

Her blank, confused gaze made her look even more pitiful.

However, remembering that she could very well be a domain creature, Feng Qi forcefully suppressed any pity that crept into his heart. Instead, a trace of killing intent flickered across his mind.

Being persistently entangled by the girl clearly wasn't a solution. Gritting his teeth, he grabbed her small body, pried her loose from his arm, and stormed toward the window.

Taking on the pose of a soccer goalie about to kick off, Feng Qi swung his leg and kicked her straight out the window.

Then, leaning over the windowsill, he observed the outside to check for any unusual movement.

But before he could breathe a sigh of relief, he watched in horror as the little girl sprang upright upon landing, leapt into the air with startling speed, scaled the wall like a spider, and smashed directly into his chest, wrapping her arms tightly around him again.

She clung to him like a leech, firmly affixed to his chest.

Feng Qi: ...

Feng Qi tugged a few times, but to his shock, he realized that no matter how hard he pulled, he couldn't budge the little girl attached to him.

Feng Qi: ...

Seeing the girl stuck to him like glue, Feng Qi's face was filled with helplessness. He turned his gaze inward and asked, "Narrator, what the hell is this thing?"

[No idea, but since she's so clingy, let's just call her 'Suction Cup.']

Feng Qi: ...

The name was so ridiculous that he didn't even have the energy to complain about it.

Just as he was racking his brain for ways to get rid of the girl, the hallway outside began to shake violently. Moments later, a three-meter-tall monstrous hound with tentacles for a tail appeared at the doorway.

Seeing this, Feng Qi didn't hesitate—he immediately turned to leap out the window. Staying here meant certain death.

However, before he could act, the hound's tentacles shot forward with incredible speed, latching onto him in an instant.

He was pulled off his feet, his body dangling helplessly in the air as he was dragged toward the monstrous hound.

The hound's head began to split open, revealing a maw lined with slimy, sinewy threads of flesh that oozed thick mucus.

Realizing he was about to be devoured, Feng Qi struggled desperately, trying to break free from the tentacles' grip.

But compared to the hound's tremendous strength, his efforts were utterly futile.

Just as despair began to sink in, the little girl—still clinging to his chest—suddenly opened her gray-white eyes.

To Feng Qi's shock, starlight began to shimmer within her gaze.

Without warning, the girl twisted her tiny body, turned toward the monstrous hound, and delivered a devastating punch to its gaping maw.

BOOM!

The air vibrated with a deafening sound, and the monstrous hound was sent crashing to the ground from the sheer force of the blow.

The ground, riddled with cracks, finally gave way under the hound's weight. A loud rumble filled the air as the floor collapsed, and Feng Qi tumbled down with it, landing hard on the level below.

Amid the swirling dust, Feng Qi sat up, coughing violently. His gaze fell on the little girl, who now stood calmly in the debris, her eyes glowing with starlight.

Feng Qi was utterly dumbfounded.

"This thing… is this strong?!"

Meanwhile, the monstrous hound roared angrily as it struggled back to its feet, shaking its massive head. Its tentacles once again lashed out toward Feng Qi.

Sensing the imminent danger, Feng Qi wasted no time. He leapt toward the window and flung himself out.

Landing on the ground below, he didn't dare look back. He immediately bolted, sprinting away from the crumbling building as fast as his legs could carry him.

He could feel the earth trembling behind him, the violent aftermath of the ongoing battle between the little girl and the monstrous hound.

Before long, a deafening explosion echoed through the air. Turning his head, Feng Qi watched as the entire apartment complex crumbled into rubble, a massive cloud of dust and debris rising high into the sky.

"Unbelievable!"

The raw power the little girl had displayed was beyond anything Feng Qi had expected.

This only strengthened his suspicion that the girl must be a domain creature.

After all, no human child could possibly possess such terrifying strength.

When he was that age, the most he could do was babble incoherently and need his parents' help just to aim straight when peeing.

And yet here was this little girl, punching giant monsters and toppling buildings.

Still, as bizarre as it was, Feng Qi couldn't help but wonder—why had she protected him?

He shook his head. "It's probably just a coincidence," he muttered to himself.

But a wild thought flashed through his mind.

If this girl really could protect him in the dream realm, wouldn't that mean he could walk around unchallenged? That would be amazing!

Just as this hopeful idea crossed his mind, the narrator's voice chimed in again:

[Well, speak of the devil—here comes your chance.]

Before Feng Qi could react, a small, blurry figure suddenly shot toward him from the distance.

Before he knew it, the little girl collided with him like a missile, her tiny frame smashing into his chest and latching on tightly.

The impact sent Feng Qi flying backward, and he crashed to the ground, the back of his head slamming hard against the pavement.

"Damn it!" he cursed loudly, groaning in pain.

The girl clung to him like a barnacle, utterly unfazed.

Feng Qi could only lie there, staring blankly at the overcast sky.
