Chapter 14: A valedictorian would always be a valedictorian. (1)
The Zhang’s place was only a few hours from City B and the trip was uneventful.
Lin Xi sat in the car quietly and listened to the driver sharing with her occasionally what’s hip in City B and where to go for food and fun.
Even though she had been up all night, Lin Xi did not feel tired at all.
By the time they got close to NTN Technology Center, the driver stopped and explained to Lin Xi, “This is as far as I can go. I am going to have to let you out here.”
Lin Xi nodded, expressed that that would be fine, thanked him, and got out of the car.
Standing in front of NTN Technology Center and looking up at the tall and magnificent building, Lin Xi couldn't help but think to herself, “Ah, so this is the legendary NTN Technology Center. Sure enough… even the aura that it exudes can be intimidating.”
This was a place that she always looked forward to. She recalled an essay that she had written for a school event previous. The title was Dream. And she wrote about becoming the youngest professor in China and be able to go to NTN Technology Center.
Her essay was picked as the sample for all later on. Unfortunately, when she excitedly told that to her family, Song Kexin merely gave her a nonchalant look and said to her, “Oh, that’s nice.” The others didn’t even blink an eye. They were busy going to watch Lin Anxin’s class’s group dance.
Lin Xi went down the path of memory lane.
A scrawny girl in sweatshirt with a big luggage back standing in front of NTN Technology Center was not something that one would see every day.
Perhaps Lin Xi had stood outside of the building for a little too long. When the security guard from not too far away spotted her, they almost thought she was a beggar.
The security guard walked up and called out to her. “Hey, that kid over there. What are you doing here?” This is not the place to beg for money.
Lin Xi looked at the security guard and nodded. “Hi, Uncle. I am here looking for someone. Do I go in from here to get to NTN Technology Center?”
Lin Xi was courteous and articulate. She didn’t feel like a beggar.
The security guard gave her a dubious look. “You are here looking for someone?”
“Mmm. The person I am looking for works here.”
She didn’t sound like she was lying but the way she looked…
The security guard was uncertain what to do. He hesitated for a little while and said to her. “I’m not sure either. Follow me and you can ask for youself.”
The security guard brought her to the front desk of NTN Technology Center and briefly explained the situation to the receptionist before he took off.
At the front desk was a little big sister that was not too old.
She looked at Lin Xi dubiously. The girl standing in front of her was young and obviously still a student. For sure she wasn’t there for business but she didn’t look like she was there looking for someone either.
That being said, she asked her softly anyway, “Who are you looking for? I can look them up for you.”
“I am looking for Gu Shao, your Boss Gu.”
The receptionist was dumbfounded for a little while. She almost thought she had misheard.
“You are looking for our Boss Gu?”
“Yes.” Lin Xi nodded.
The receptionist frowned, apparently not believing in her words.
She couldn’t begin to comprehend how their big boss would have anything to do with this girl in front of her.
“Did you learn of our Boss Gu from a book or news article?” asked the receptionist again.
Lin Xi gave her question some thought. She learned that Gu Shao was her real father from the novel in her dream. That was a book of sort. So she nodded.
Her response made the receptionist’s lips twitched. So this girl learned of boss on the news and came looking for him… was she joking?
Even though she felt that Lin Xi was being unreasonable, she still maintained her professionalism and asked again, “Do you have an appointment with him then?”
Lin Xi shook her head. “No, no appointment.”
“Can I make an appointment right now?” asked Lin Xi anxiously.
The receptionist smiled. “I’m sorry. Our Boss Gu won’t have any free time for a while.”
“It’s fine. I can wait.” Lin Xi was very stubborn about it.
The receptionist was put in a very difficult position. She was only going to send the child away but the child was more stubborn than she had expected. It made no sense for a dirty child around 13 ~ 14 to make an appointment to meet with their CEO. Nothing made sense about this.
“I apologize. I cannot make an appointment for you if this is not business related.” The receptionist gave Lin Xi another professional smile, her voice as determined as it was before.
Lin Xi was disappointed when she heard that.
-- Trying to meet with the boss was more difficult than she had expected.
But she didn’t want to give up.
Lin Xi bit her lips and lowered her head. She did not take a step away from the front desk.
Suddenly, an idea occurred to her. She looked up and looked at the receptionist sincerely. “I really would like to meet with Boss Gu. I had never met him before but he is my benefactor.”
She would never have been born if it wasn’t for Gu Shao. Technically, she wasn’t wrong that Gu Shao was her “benefactor”.
Lin Xi suppressed whatever little guilty conscience that she had and said, “I am a student in poverty whom he had sponsored.”
