Chapter 87: One Girlfriend Isn’t Enough
The first meeting between Nick Fury and Su Ye ended on a rather unfriendly note.
S.H.I.E.L.D.'s attempt to recruit Su Ye was unsuccessful, and Su Ye's proposal to establish a Dragon Country-led department within S.H.I.E.L.D. was, unsurprisingly, also impossible to approve.
This was no trivial matter—not something Nick Fury could decide on his own. Even his superior, Alexander Pierce, head of the Security Council, would never approve it.
Alexander Pierce was American, and S.H.I.E.L.D., dominated by Americans, was long considered their turf. Why would they allow Dragon Country to have a stake in it?
Nick Fury didn't even need to ask for instructions to know it was a no-go.
In the end, Nick Fury could only watch helplessly as Su Ye turned and left.
"Director, are we just going to give up like this?"
Sharon Carter, standing nearby, felt somewhat unwilling to let it end this way.
As a rookie, she had mostly been assigned general surveillance and monitoring tasks. Investigating and tracking Su Ye was her first specific mission, and she was highly invested in it.
To Sharon, Su Ye, from "Ironhead" to his current status as a martial arts master, was someone she had personally discovered in the vast sea of people. He was her ticket to advancement, something she could proudly put on her résumé.
But now, it seemed this lead was about to be cut off?
That couldn't happen!
If the lead truly ended, wouldn't the past few months of her work have been in vain?
Sharon Carter turned to Nick Fury. "Director, are we really giving up on Ironhead?"
In S.H.I.E.L.D.'s files, Su Ye's codename was "Ironhead," a name carried over from his days in underground fight clubs. Until he got an official hero name, this codename would remain in use.
If any other agent had asked, Nick Fury might have ignored them or given a perfunctory response.
But this was Sharon Carter, niece of S.H.I.E.L.D. legend Peggy Carter. People with backgrounds like hers received special treatment everywhere—it was the same worldwide.
Nick Fury shook his head and said to Sharon, "From Ironhead's words, it's clear he's different from those other Dragon Country nationals. Though he's studying here, he has little interest in joining our American organization."
"Unless we actually let him establish a Dragon Country-led department in S.H.I.E.L.D. and allow him to set up a so-called 'D-Branch,' it's almost impossible to recruit him."
Thinking about it, Nick Fury couldn't help but feel like scratching his head.
That Ironhead sure lived up to his name—wanting to establish a Dragon Country-led department in the U.S.-dominated S.H.I.E.L.D., and even setting up some branch? What was he trying to do?
Everyone knew that Dragon Country was great at ideological and political education. If they really set up their branch, turning S.H.I.E.L.D. into "Red Shield" wouldn't be surprising to Nick Fury.
No matter how much Nick Fury cared about global human safety, he did not want to see that happen—especially not under his watch.
Sharon Carter furrowed her brows, biting her finger as she pondered how to get Su Ye to join S.H.I.E.L.D. willingly without getting hung up on the Dragon Country issue.
After thinking for a long time, Sharon finally came up with a method—not brilliant but likely effective.
"Maybe, if we make him more like an American—or at least someone close to America—then it shouldn't be a problem, right?"
As she said this, Sharon recalled Su Ye's earlier remark: "Does S.H.I.E.L.D. assign partners?" and immediately got an idea.
"Director, Ironhead has an American girlfriend—the daughter of George Stacy, the captain of NYPD's 19th Precinct. That could be an opening, right?"
"That's just one girlfriend," Nick Fury shook his head. "Girlfriends don't count for much. Young people today are fickle—they could break up at any time. It's not a reliable bargaining chip."
"Just one girlfriend isn't enough?"
Sharon murmured to herself. Suddenly, a lightbulb went off in her head, and she caught on to what Fury meant.
'One girlfriend isn't enough as leverage, but what if it becomes two?'
Thinking back to the way Su Ye had looked at her earlier, Sharon felt that if it were her, she might be able to sweeten the deal. Besides, the director wasn't wrong—one girlfriend per night might really not be enough for Su Ye...
Across from her, Nick Fury had no idea what Sharon was thinking. However, he also didn't want to give up on Su Ye so easily, so he instructed, "For now, keep in contact with Ironhead. We'll see how things develop later."
"Understood, sir!" Sharon nodded in agreement, thinking to herself that the director shared her line of thinking. Time to act accordingly.
Su Ye originally planned to head straight home after leaving the Shiranui Dojo. With Mai Shiranui unavailable and Gwen back home, he had no choice but to give himself a break.
As he walked through the courtyard, he glanced at Thor's hammer. The ground around it had been dug out, but the hammer remained firmly in place.
It seemed that this hammer wasn't leaving the courtyard anytime soon. As for Thor, Su Ye had asked Coulson about him and learned that he was still sulking. Even Iron Man, who had flown him over, had tried lifting the hammer with his suit but failed.
Judging by the current situation, it seemed they would have to wait until S.H.I.E.L.D. unearthed Captain America for any hope of moving the hammer.
Su Ye gave the hammer a casual glance and was about to leave when his enhanced hearing, courtesy of his spider gene, and his uncanny Spider-Sense suddenly detected something unusual.
However, Su Ye didn't let it show and instead acted as if nothing was wrong, calmly turning to leave.
About a hundred meters away, on a rooftop, two figures dressed in black were quietly hiding in the shadows.
"Did you see that? Those people inside have been busy for days, and two nights ago, a rainbow beam descended. There's definitely an important treasure in there!"
A tall, burly man whispered, keeping his voice low.
Next to him was a slender woman who nodded repeatedly after hearing this. "Dad, got it! So, my first mission is to steal that treasure, right?"
As she spoke, her voice became excited. After so much training, her debut mission was to steal a valuable treasure from a heavily guarded official facility. The thought made her body tremble with anticipation.
"I just brought you here to take a look, and you're already thinking big!" The burly man grunted, about to say more, when a stranger's voice suddenly sounded behind them.
"I'd suggest you don't mess with that treasure…"
The two figures in black were highly alert. Upon hearing the voice behind them, they simultaneously spun around and launched attacks toward the source.
The burly man twitched his hands, and ten sharp blades popped out from his fingertips, slashing like a beast's claws.
The slender woman, meanwhile, pulled out a black whip from who-knows-where. Combined with her black leather outfit, it immediately evoked the image of a "queen."
However, this queen wasn't of the traditional kind but rather the type associated with some rather niche tastes and peculiar demands.
