Chapter 24: Spider-Man, Come Catch Me!
With such a studious and independent girlfriend, Su Ye could only steal a quick kiss, smudging her lipstick, before watching her leave.
He opened the box to find a Bluetooth earpiece, the kind that allows real-time communication.
The earpiece alone showed how thoroughly Gwen had prepared.
"So, you're going solo tonight, right?"
Harry raised an eyebrow and said, "Want me to set you up with a date?"
Su Ye scoffed. The evils of capitalism, trying to corrupt my pure soul? Not a chance.
"One? That's not enough—I want ten!"
Of course, he was joking. Ten? Not even one was happening tonight.
That evening, Su Ye and Harry sat in VIP seats to watch the performance.
To be honest, Su Ye couldn't make heads or tails of Broadway opera.
If it weren't for the loud sound system, he might have slept through the whole thing. Even so, he spent most of the time zoning out, barely staying awake by playing a silly game of "guess the actresses' cup sizes."
However, as the performance neared its end, a question popped into Su Ye's mind.
"Harry, hasn't MJ appeared yet?"
Since it was Harry's girlfriend's debut, Su Ye, as a friend, was prepared to compliment her performance. But if he hadn't even seen her, what was he supposed to praise?
Harry kept his usual calm smile but subtly shook his head.
"I haven't seen her either. Maybe she'll show up soon?"
"Alright then."
Su Ye refocused on the show, but even when it ended, he still hadn't spotted Mary Jane.
Am I blind? No way! My vision's sharp enough to see a fly's legs from meters away—there's no way I missed Mary Jane's appearance. Damn...
I must've been too focused on analyzing cup sizes earlier, only looking at… you know.
If Mary Jane had gone braless like in the movies, Su Ye might've recognized her. After all, he'd studied those rainy scenes quite thoroughly… ahem!
The problem was, in operas, they wear such thick costumes—it really messed with his ability to judge.
Thinking again, Su Ye realized something didn't add up. Even if he'd missed her while being distracted, there was no way Harry would've done the same. This was a major moment for his girlfriend—what, was Harry ogling others too?
It wasn't until the final curtain call that Su Ye understood—he hadn't missed her. Mary Jane had played "Witch B," a silent role with a mask. No wonder he hadn't noticed her—she could've been anyone!
"First time on stage, the role doesn't matter. Gaining experience is what's important!"
In the end, Su Ye could only think of this line. If anyone asked him about it later, that's what he'd say.
But just then, the theater's wall was suddenly smashed from the outside, leaving a large hole. Nearby audience members were showered with concrete debris, and a green figure burst through the gap.
"It's Green Goblin!"
"Ahh! Help!"
"The killer is here! Run!"
Unlike Spider-Man, who usually operated in dark alleys with few witnesses and no photos,
Green Goblin, who had once attacked the Aerospace Expo, was already on law enforcement's radar and had made headlines, becoming a well-known public figure.
His cruelty and wickedness were well-known to everyone.
The moment Green Goblin barged in, desperate screams erupted from the audience, and the theater descended into chaos.
Green Goblin, however, seemed to take the screams as applause. Laughing maniacally, he flew onto the stage, grabbed two actresses—one in each hand—and headed for the hole in the wall.
"Where's Spider-Man? That idiot! Isn't he New York's so-called women's friend? Right now, I've got two of the city's most famous women. If your 'friend' doesn't show up soon, well… they won't be around much longer! Hahahaha!"
Green Goblin laughed hysterically as he flew out through the hole. His words, captured by a pre-arranged camera, were broadcast live to homes across the city.
In no time, much of New York's population knew that Green Goblin had kidnapped two actresses specifically to provoke New York's friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
Who is Spider-Man?
This question immediately popped into the minds of many.
They knew of Green Goblin but not Spider-Man. They wondered what made this Spider-Man so significant that Green Goblin would go to such lengths to provoke him.
'Su Ye, call the police!" Harry shouted as he rushed out.
Whether by coincidence or bad luck, his Mary Jane happened to be one of the two actresses Green Goblin had taken.
Harry wanted to yell after him, "The masked one isn't even famous! Can you at least let her go?"
Before Su Ye could dial the police, his phone rang—it was Gwen.
"Hey, put on the earpiece I gave you. It's time to move."
Su Ye shook his head. This girl really got into character quickly—already acting like a mission commander.
Finding a secluded spot, he put on the earpiece and changed into his suit. After nearly a week, Spider-Man finally reappeared on New York's streets.
"Green Goblin's south of you, about seven or eight blocks away!"
Gwen's concise voice came through the earpiece. The headset she had given Su Ye had real-time GPS tracking, allowing her to monitor his position on her computer and plot his route.
Truthfully, Su Ye didn't even need Gwen's guidance. Green Goblin was dead set on luring Spider-Man out tonight, flying so blatantly that he wasn't even trying to stay hidden.
Below him, someone looked up and saw Su Ye swinging through the air. They shouted in surprise and excitement, "It's Spider-Man!"
That night, Su Ye's identity as Spider-Man began to spread among New Yorkers in an unintentional way. But he had no intention of becoming a celebrity—his focus was solely on the Green Goblin flying ahead.
To others, Green Goblin was a flying green demon, a symbol of destruction and misfortune. To Su Ye, however, he was a walking treasure chest.
The last time he "outsmarted" Green Goblin, he received a blue ★ card. This time, who knows what kind of card he might get?
A purple card? Or perhaps a gold one?
Su Ye figured a purple card, one tier above blue, was plausible. But a gold card? That was pretty much out of the question.
Purple cards corresponded to "premium," while gold cards represented "legendary."
At best, Green Goblin could be considered "premium," but he wasn't anywhere near "legendary" status.
