Chapter 5: Chapter 5: Land of Hot Water, Land of Chaos
Uchiha Shisui stepped forward and patted Uchiha Renzou on the shoulder.
He had keenly noticed the slight tremble from Uchiha Renzou just now.
However, since Shisui had graduated early and was still quite young, he was short like a little radish. His attempt at comforting someone looked somewhat comical.
"You don't need to worry too much. Even I didn't expect Elder Setsuna to personally lead this mission. Looking at it this way, the danger level on your end should be relatively low," Shisui said with a warm smile, offering comfort.
Even though he himself had chosen the far more dangerous battlefield in the Land of Rain, he was the one consoling Uchiha Renzou here.
Uchiha Renzou snapped out of his daze, looking at Shisui with a deadpan expression.
Damn it, not only did you snatch away my easy mission of feeding pigs, but you're also taking on a suicide job too?
Can you even act like a normal person?
"Renzou-kun, I have to complete my mission before tomorrow's assembly, so I'll take my leave first."
Shisui waved the C-rank mission scroll he had just accepted and then departed.
After Shisui left, Uchiha Renzou's eyes flickered slightly.
Was the danger level of Hell Valley in the Land of Hot Water really low?
That... was hardly the case.
Nightfall.
The full moon emerged from behind the clouds, casting its cool light over the land.
Inside the Uchiha Clan compound,
Uchiha Setsuna, wearing wooden clogs, coldly slid open a wooden door.
Inside the small room, countless pairs of scarlet eyes lit up in an instant.
"Great Elder!"
Amidst the chorus of greetings, Uchiha Setsuna sat cross-legged at the central seat of the room.
Sitting beside him was Uchiha Hachidai, the second-in-command of the Hawk Faction.
Below them were nearly a hundred Uchiha, all at least Chunin level, all of whom had activated their Sharingan.
This was the foundation of the Hawk Faction.
"Great Elder, wasn't it already decided that we would send a squad of elite combatants to the Land of Hot Water?"
Hachidai frowned slightly and asked,
"Why is there a Genin on the list? And one who hasn't even awakened the Sharingan at that?"
"Did you not inform the clan members of the dangers of this mission?"
Uchiha Setsuna picked up his teacup, glanced at Hachidai, and said flatly, "I will personally lead this mission."
"With me alone, that is enough."
"But this isn't just about the Chinoike Clan stirring up trouble and the increased guard pressure." Hachidai frowned and analyzed,
"The Land of Hot Water is situated between the Land of Fire, the Land of Lightning, and the Land of Water. Recently, Iwagakure and Sunagakure have also engaged in small-scale skirmishes with Kirigakure, turning the entire region into utter chaos."
" Spies and special operations forces from various nations were mixed together, along with numerous small organizations that emerged in minor countries after the Second Shinobi World War—Xuanyuan Sect, Prajna Sect, the Cult of Jashin, Tsuchigumo Clan, and the remnants of the now-destroyed Yokage Village. There were also Kirigakure's Kiri-nin Assassination Squad and Pursuit Squad, Iwagakure's Explosion Corps, Rasa, who was racking up battlefield achievements on the Kirigakure front to secure the Kazekage position, and the bounty hunters of the underground exchange.
"This place is already a complete mess."
Hachidai shook his head with a solemn expression, feeling that Uchiha Setsuna was being overly confident.
Even if the Third Hokage himself went, he might not necessarily come out unscathed.
Although Uchiha Setsuna was an old veteran from the Warring States period, bringing only a Genin and a Chunin seemed extremely reckless.
But in reality, the Uchiha clan was stretched thin. The Police Force was restricted by Konoha and couldn't leave the village without cause.
Hachidai hesitated for a moment before suggesting, "Perhaps… we could request aid from Konoha?"
"Enough."
Uchiha Setsuna set down his teacup, his voice calm yet unquestionable.
"With me alone, that is enough."
"Hachidai, the Hell Valley watch mission did not come from Konoha. It was personally commissioned to the Uchiha by the Daimyo of the Land of Lightning. It is one of our clan's long-term missions and one of our few remaining sources of income."
"Never place your sense of security in the hands of others, especially Konoha, Hiruzen, and Danzo."
Uchiha Setsuna raised his head, his pair of scarlet Sharingan glowing with an eerie chill.
"The only things that matter are those we have control over ourselves. Anything granted by others requires you to bow and scrape like a dog, and the moment they find you unsatisfactory, they can kick you away at any time."
Hachidai fell silent at those words.
Ninjas were tools of war, detached from production. The wealth Uchiha could acquire, aside from ancestral properties and landholdings within Konoha, came only from the large-scale missions the clan accepted.
Guarding the Chinoike Clan was a mission that brought in an annual reward equivalent to an S-rank mission.
It was long-term. It was stable.
And that was precisely why Uchiha Setsuna refused to let Konoha interfere.
Click.
Uchiha Renzou had just slid open the door to his home…
When suddenly, a dust-covered boy wearing goggles fell from a tree in the yard.
Uchiha Renzou immediately recognized the reason for the fall:
The idiot had failed to properly control his chakra output while practicing tree climbing.
"Obito, what are you doing again?"
Seeing this uninvited guest, Uchiha Renzou was at a loss for words.
The boy was none other than Uchiha Obito, who had only graduated from the Ninja Academy last year.
And also happened to be his current neighbor.
"Yo, it's Renzou! Haha, I'm just preparing for the Chunin Exams!" Obito scratched the back of his head with a chuckle before pouting in frustration.
"Damn that Kakashi! He keeps bossing me around just because he's a Chunin! Making me follow his orders!"
"It was just a simple mission to catch a cat!"
"When I finish training, I'm gonna shove my Chunin vest right in his face!"
Obito ranted while explaining what had happened.
Hearing this, Uchiha Renzou was momentarily stunned. Then, it dawned on him.
Unknowingly, he had already spent a full year in this still relatively peaceful Konoha.
He only now realized how far the timeline had advanced.
Last year, Obito had officially formed a three-man team with Kakashi and Rin under Minato Namikaze. They had already been carrying out D-rank missions for a while.
But Obito's wish to become a Chunin this year would probably be impossible.
The Third Ninja War was about to erupt.
Minato, as an elite Jonin, would soon be deployed to the front lines, meaning his team would be forced to follow him from battlefield to battlefield.
It wouldn't be until Konoha finally gained some breathing room after repelling the Land of Lightning's offensive that a Chunin Exam would be held in Konoha in Year 48.
That was when Obito would get kicked by Might Guy, suffer serious injuries, and ultimately pass the exam despite losing.
"What are you zoning out for? My grandma made noodles, come eat!" Obito waved his hand in front of Uchiha Renzou's face, tilting his head in question.
"Alright, let me put my things away first."
Uchiha Renzou nodded, accepting the invitation.
On his way back, he had retrieved his sandals and trident from the river.
But the sack full of recyclable cans—his pocket money—had mysteriously vanished.
Some bastard must have stolen it.
Uchiha Renzou cursed under his breath. The world was really going downhill.
A year ago, Konoha wasn't like this.
