Chapter 4: I Don’t Want to Be a Heroic Spirit [4]
Baobhan Sith thought she was doing her best to appear harmless and friendly.
She didn't materialize right in the center of the group; instead, she appeared at a visible distance, flashing a bright, sunny smile in front of everyone.
But to the others…
The girl in front of them had slipped past all their scouts and approached them without any of them noticing! With stealth as formidable as hers, she could have easily taken a few lives without them being any the wiser. Yet here she was, standing openly before them, smiling with the absolute confidence of a powerful warrior. Her demeanor, her smile—it all seemed to mock the strength they once took pride in.
Everyone here was a proud curse user. Sure, they'd all had their egos bruised by a certain someone recognized as "the strongest" since birth, but they'd never admit that. Besides, in their eyes, the one taunting them now was nothing more than a young girl.
Talents like Satoru Gojo's only appeared once in hundreds of years. This little girl couldn't possibly be another genius like him, yet her attitude was eerily similar!
And so, as if Baobhan Sith's D-Rank Luck had activated, each of them began projecting the frustration they'd bottled up against Gojo onto her…
Was it just her imagination, or were they looking at her like she'd… hmm…
…Knocked over their entire display case of limited-edition Gundam models?
Probably just a trick of the mind. Better get on with asking about this world…
And so, Baobhan Sith opened her mouth.
"You bunch of grunts—any one of you will do. Just step up and answer my question."
Silence…
Utter, deafening silence…
The atmosphere was as dead as a graveyard, the very air seemed to have frozen solid.
But in reality, this silence was only the calm before the volcanic eruption.
What did I just say?
Feeling the tension thickening around her, Baobhan Sith knew she'd messed up and tried to backtrack…
"This is boring, dull, a pack of pathetic grunts—are you going to keep me waiting? Should I just slaughter you like livestock?"
…Welp, that's it for me.
Sure enough, if looks could kill, I'd probably be minced meat by now.
"You damned brat!"
A bearded man at the front couldn't hold back any longer. He conjured a double-edged axe from thin air and brought it down toward Baobhan Sith's head.
Boom!
The axe buried itself into the earth, sinking deep, but the bearded man stared in shock at the rose-haired girl now casually perched on top of his axe.
It wasn't just the bearded man—all the others had widened eyes, shocked, as few of them had even managed to catch her movements.
"You!"
The bearded man snapped back to his senses and tried to yank his axe free, straining with all his might until veins bulged across his burly arms. Yet the axe—and the girl standing on it—remained completely unmoved.
Perched on the axe's edge, her crimson heels seemed to anchor it in place.
Even though she had to balance on the axe just to meet his eye level, Baobhan Sith's gaze seemed to look down upon him, her inviting red lips speaking the cruellest words.
"What's wrong, little piggy? Use some strength! You're so weak it's not even worth slaughtering you… Would you mind finding a quiet corner to finish yourself off, grunt?"
A cold flash of light sliced through the air like a crescent moon. But before it could strike Baobhan Sith, her figure vanished, reappearing five meters away.
Baobhan Sith hadn't shown off much of her power yet, but even this glimpse was enough to make everyone else look increasingly grim.
"All together!"
"How pathetic. Trash piled up is still just a bigger heap of trash."
Baobhan Sith laughed with wild abandon, though her heart was anything but calm.
"Da Vinci! What's going on here?"
"I'm not entirely sure. It might be that your personality is syncing a bit too well with Baobhan Sith's Saint Graph, so during the fusion process, her temperament is influencing you. If that's the case, it should fade once you've adapted more to the fusion."
"And what about these people? They're not going to listen to any explanations if they're out for my blood."
"Then hold back a little, Master. Instead of going for 'annihilation,' aim for 'subjugation,' you know—like 'striking with the back of your blade.'"
Baobhan Sith looked reluctant, but it did seem like the best option for now.
Ducking low to dodge a gust blade aimed her way, Baobhan Sith tossed her hair back and covered the distance to the nearest attacker in three strides, locking eyes with his stunned expression.
Carefully avoiding vital spots like the temples, neck, and heart, Baobhan Sith delivered a firm slap to his stomach.
Then… she watched in silence as an entire row of trees toppled over, snapped in two.
Maybe I should pull my punches even more?
I mean, I already did, but it's still this strong? This is A-Rank Strength? I could get used to this…
Sidestepping an ambush from another would-be assailant, she drove a retaliatory fist into his side.
Since Baobhan Sith's slashes couldn't be held back, she had to rely on hand-to-hand combat.
This is feeling more and more like a Berserker…
Fortunately, none of them were strong enough to make Baobhan Sith take the fight seriously. From start to finish, they couldn't land a single hit, and it was practically a one-sided massacre.
Perfect—this gave her a chance to practice subduing her opponents with just the right amount of force to keep them down without sending them straight to the ICU.
As for the poor souls who ended up as practice dummies…
Well, in Chen Gong's words, "Necessary sacrifices!"
Within minutes, the battlefield was reduced to a mountain of bodies.
The girl stood calmly at its center, like a Valkyrie reigning over the battlefield, her scarlet outfit and hair like a vision stained in blood.
Almost everyone lay scattered on the ground. Some were buried with only their heads sticking out for air so they wouldn't suffocate. The surrounding trees had also taken some collateral damage, lying crisscrossed from the fallout. They seemed to confirm the life lesson of the day—staying too close to the action is a serious health hazard.
It might have looked brutal, but she'd actually managed to avoid killing anyone. Though a few still clung to consciousness, struggling to rise, Baobhan Sith quickly knocked them out with a little tap to the head.
No worries—no fatalities here. Worst case, a few concussions.
And thus, Baobhan Sith's fine control over her power became even more precise.
A cause for celebration, really.
