Chapter 160 [Subjugation of the Kraken of the Abyss (1)]
The Kraken of the Abyss.
A named monster that appears through specific events in the vast Lake of Knowledge surrounding the Island of Knowledge.
As soon as I saw its enormous body, or more precisely, its blue and gigantic tentacle covered in squid suckers, I immediately realized that it had appeared.
Of course, I hadn’t yet thought about why this boss monster had suddenly popped up now.
‘Why the hell is that thing coming out now?!’
Story-wise, there were two main scenarios where you could encounter the Kraken of the Abyss.
The first was participating in the episode where Del Rondo Prime, the former chancellor of Luminor Academy, is attacked by the Kraken of the Abyss at the lakeside, and defeating it.
The second was visiting the lake with party characters who met ‘specific conditions’ before that event occurred, forcibly summoning it, and then defeating it.
And as far as I knew, there were only a few party characters that were currently enrolled in the academy who met those ‘specific conditions,’ including Agnes.
After all, the minimum condition to summon it was entering the lake with a character whose ‘maximum mana exceeded 2,000’.
‘Agnes isn’t here, neither is Orion or Lara, so why did it suddenly…’
No matter how fast Ethan had grown, his maximum mana couldn’t have exceeded 2,000.
Also, there didn’t seem to be any other boats passing by. Apart from Ethan, the only person here was me…
‘…Ah.’
Only then did I realize the mistake I had made…
…along with the cause of that subtle sense of crisis that had run down my spine as soon as we entered the lake on the boat. [Only on Galaxy Translations! / Axiomatic]
‘Shit, my maximum mana has exceeded 2,000 too.’
To be precise, it was 2,460. In terms of maximum mana alone, I was practically a walking mana tank, almost comparable to Agnes.
I suddenly wanted to smack my head for my carelessness, which I had only just realized.
Of course, I didn’t have the luxury to do such a thing now, as all I could do was hold onto the hull of the boat rocking in the waves.
“Li-Lilith!”
“Calm down, Ethan! First, grab your sword!”
“O-okay!”
Ethan’s sword, a high-quality item that was even engraved with the Blackwood crest, hadn’t slipped out of its scabbard even in the chaos.
That’s a relief. At least we wouldn’t become water ghost fodder without being able to do anything about it.
Despite having been confused by Ethan’s confession, my mind instantly became calm as a life-threatening crisis arrived.
Forget about answering his confession, we had to deal with this monster in front of us somehow.
I wanted to run away if possible, but there was no way we could escape while avoiding the attacks of those huge tentacles on the water.
It seemed we couldn’t avoid fighting it, even if it was a bit risky.
‘This isn’t good…’
To strike at its weakness, the protagonist-Agnes combination was the most excellent.
The most orthodox strategy I knew to defeat the Kraken was to deflect the numerous tentacles rushing to attack the boat with the protagonist’s swordsmanship, and then deal damage with Agnes’s fire magic.
Of course, I had never tried catching the Kraken with an Ethan and Lilith combination. Not only did it not meet the summoning conditions, but Ethan wasn’t even a playable character to begin with.
Even with the protagonist character, it was only possible to barely block its attacks when they were at around the second year of the academy.
Although the current Ethan could be said to be as strong as the protagonist, I couldn’t be sure if he could deflect those massive tentacles.
The only advantages Ethan had over the protagonist were that he was a bit more agile and he could use dual swords to add slightly more variation to his attacks.
If Lilith’s support magic was added to that, we might be able to make it manageable somehow.
After all, even the ‘disgusting Ethan’ was excellent in terms of coordination with Lilith. The current Ethan would probably have even better compatibility with Lilith.
Fortunately, Lilith had one skill that could be utilized in this water battle.
『Water Walking: The target character can walk on water for a certain period of time.』
Although it was a common skill as it was the second tier of the support magic skill tree, it consumed 4 skill points, but there was no reason to hesitate.
Only the protagonist and Agnes could fight in tandem while riding such a small boat, and Ethan and I had our own way of fighting that suited us.
『Remaining Skill Points: 9 → 5』
After unhesitatingly using the skill points I had saved up, I cast it on both Ethan and myself.
As soon as I confirmed that a thin veil of mana had formed on our bodies, I shouted at Ethan.
“Abandon the boat, Ethan!”
“What?! Don’t tell me we’re going to swim away?!”
“That’s not it! Just trust me and jump onto the water! Quickly!!”
Ethan showed a slightly doubtful reaction as if he couldn’t fully believe my words this time, either.
Still, he followed my instruction to jump off the boat and threw his body onto the lake.
Splash!
“Huh, huuuh?!”
“It’s Water Walking! As long as my mana lasts, we can hold…”
CRASH!!
“KYAAAH?!”
“LILITH!!”
As soon as I jumped off the boat a beat late, one of the Kraken’s tentacles crashed right into the boat Ethan and I had been riding. [Only on Galaxy Translations! / Axiomatic]
If we had stayed there, my body would have been stuck to one of its suckers by now. My mind went blank for a moment.
It truly was a life-or-death battle where we couldn’t let our guard down for even a moment.
Splash!
“Ha, haaa…”
Fortunately, since I had also cast Water Walking on myself, my body didn’t fall into the lake below even though I lost my balance.
Thank goodness. I can’t swim, after all.
There was no way I could swim with these large breasts when I couldn’t even do it in my previous life. Without Water Walking, I would have surely sunk.
With that thought, I roughly shook off my slightly wet clothes and got up.
Anyway, to survive, we needed to either defeat it or at least inflict enough damage so that it couldn’t chase us.
“Lilith, are you okay?!”
“…Forget about me and focus on the battle, Ethan! Is this the right time to worry about me?!”
“O-okay!”
Hearing my words, Ethan hurriedly drew his dual swords from both sides of his waist.
His eyes burned intensely as they focused on the Kraken of the Abyss.
Whoosh!
“It’s coming, Lilith!”
“I can see tha… Huh, huuuh?!”
A tentacle swung diagonally towards where Ethan and I were from the upper right.
Ethan fearlessly faced the Kraken’s tentacle with his dual swords raised.
Alarmed, I instantly canceled the Water Walking spell, causing Ethan’s body to fall into the water.
Splash!
“Blurp?!”
Whoosh!!
As soon as the effect of the spell disappeared, Ethan fell straight into the water, and the tentacle narrowly brushed over him.
If my judgment had been even a little late, Ethan would have been flattened like a fly by a hand.
Why does he have to scare people like that?
I recast Water Walking on Ethan’s body as he momentarily sank and flailed in the water, and simultaneously, Ethan’s body floated back up to the surface.
“Blurp, Li-Lilith?!”
“The Kraken’s tentacles are tough. You probably can’t cut through them with your current swordsmanship, Ethan.”
“B-but Father said he even cut through the Imperial Capital’s walls with his sword…”
“There’s no way your level is the same as that monster-like human! At least know the difference between what you can and can’t do!”
“O-okay…! I won’t be greedy!”
It wasn’t that Ethan’s swordsmanship was lacking. It’s just that his dad was an unreasonable monster.
Probably, even Gyeongmwajogyegigwat couldn’t cut through those thick tentacles with his power alone, so deflecting them was the limit.
The problem was that with this type of combat, Ethan and I couldn’t defeat the Kraken with our combination.
Unlike Agnes, who could accumulate damage by using small spells multiple times, I only had one offensive magic spell that I could properly use against that giant monster.
‘Somehow, I need to buy time to use Mana Blast.’
The casting time for Mana Blast was 10 seconds.
Doing nothing for 10 seconds in front of something like the Kraken of the Abyss was no different from quickly giving up on life.
However, Ethan’s sword would only be able to make a scratch on the main body of that giant monster at best.
Above all, the range of his attacks was too short. Ethan hadn’t even reached the level of a Sword Master yet, so it was impossible for him to release the energy of a sword imbued with full power. [Only on Galaxy Translations! / Axiomatic]
In the end, whether I liked it or not, my Mana Blast was the only viable method.
Ethan’s role in this situation was to buy time until my spell was completed.
It wouldn’t be easy to ask Ethan, who was already struggling to deflect the incoming tentacles, to defend for 10 seconds, but I had a method for that, too.
I used up almost all of my remaining skill points to level up a second support skill.
『Sharp Blade: Increases the power of attacks using swords.』
『Remaining Skill Points: 5 → 1』
Now, there weren’t even points left to level up other skills.
If this doesn’t work, well, I’ll just have to accept it as fate.
With that thought, I cast the newly acquired support magic spell, Sharp Blade, on Ethan.
Immediately, a tentacle flew towards Ethan and me again, as if to test the performance of the new spell.
“Ethan! I’ve cast support magic! This time, cut with all your might!”
“UWAAAAAAH!!!”
Ethan swung with all his might towards the incoming tentacle, holding his two dual swords in a cross shape.
His swords cut into and dug through the massive flesh of the tentacle approaching right in front of him.
The blade, just over a meter long, became a giant stream of sword energy and cut right through the Kraken of the Abyss’s tentacle.
Splash!
“ROOOOOOOOAR!!!”
The Kraken’s enormous cry rang out as soon as one of its tentacles was cut off.
It definitely had an effect.
