Chapter 22
※In light of the future plot developments, the mention of MacArthur in the phone call has been changed to Patton!

It seems the United States is quite serious about this. I mean, is it really worth coming here?
To my standards, they’re historical figures. Wow, amazing! This makes sense. After all, they are individuals who played significant roles during World War I.
If the powers are watching this Red-White Civil War seriously rather than just observing from across the river, it certainly isn’t impossible.
So it’s not surprising to see that the officer dispatched from Germany is Walter Model.
The good news is that with the addition of Southern Russia, figures like Vasily Kharlamov, the White Army leader in the Caucasus, and Ilya Fundaminsky, a senior member of the Kerensky government, have also joined.
Various other individuals have joined the Duma.
And then—
“I’ve heard the enemy has entered Ukraine. The anarchist Nestor Makhno is under attack from the enemy and has contacted us, leading the Black Army.”
Finally, they’ve begun to move.
Entering Ukraine. It sounds like they plan to seize control of Ukraine to suppress Anton Denikin and stab us from the side.
I have no intention of just watching that unfold.
If the Soviet Union actually seizes Ukraine, it will become difficult for us to receive support from the powers through the Black Sea.
Anton Denikin is in danger, and they might cut off Tsaritsyn from the south.
Therefore, we should take the initiative in Ukraine.
If we can drive them back now, advancing north to Moscow would also be a good idea.
Already, Pyotr Wrangel has captured Kazan, and it would be effective to converge forces from the sides and below.
And Nestor Makhno—
He is an enemy in the Ukraine region, and also an anarchist.
In real history, he took control of southern Ukraine and Crimea in 1919 but later led the anarchist Black Army, recognizing the Bolsheviks as dictators and rebelling against them. He was later attacked by the Red Army.
In the altered history, it seems the Soviets show their true colors earlier, leading to his rebellion and attempts to align with us.
Or perhaps Trotsky might be cracking down on these anarchists at this time.
“Isn’t that enemy ideology?”
“Well, they’re reds too, but… hmm.”
Internal strife among the Reds is always welcome.
After all, watching reds fight each other is more entertaining.
Usually, these rootless folks get all hyped up about Leninism, Stalinism, and Marxism, creating all sorts of factions.
There’s bound to be some amusement in watching them clash.
“They must have conditions for joining the White Army. Have you heard anything?”
“They’ve requested recognition of Makhnovshchina, at least limited to the territory they control in Ukraine, in exchange for assisting the White Army in victory.”
Makhnovshchina.
The free territory. It’s virtually an anarchist government.
I have no intention of recognizing that for now, but allowing them to fight the enemy might not be a bad idea.
After all, that’s how you usually discard the useless. We can grant them a spot in Ukraine later and use it as a justification to wipe out the Reds.
Then I can just gobble up the eastern Ukraine controlled by Nestor Makhno.
The British won’t be able to meddle that far.
“The struggle for control in Ukraine is crucial.”
“Yes.”
“The British are probably itching to summon us. Let’s raise our army in the south. Contact Major General Anton Denikin and tell him to push up from the south.”
I thought about going myself to boost morale, but I could already see the Bolsheviks rallying their Red Army with the message that they would end the war as soon as they captured the princess.
So until we’ve drained the Reds’ strength, it wouldn’t be wise for me to step in directly.
I can only hope Denikin does well.
Based on actual history, this guy doesn’t have the best reputation, which is the problem.

Ukraine
The British Army stationed in Ukraine was in disbelief.
“Give me anything! Colonies, whatever! Just save the royal family!”
The German Empire turned into a generous tree, giving everything away, but just as they were pleased with defeating Germany, the prolonged war meant that the best course for Britain was to set up a friendly government in Ukraine and withdraw.
The stationed troops were only a few thousand, mere numbers.
People muttered that they shouldn’t have been so lenient with Germany, but with the U.S. president talking about treating Germany generously, there was no way to turn back the clock on what had transpired.
Then, as if on cue during this crucial time, the Bolsheviks seemed to go insane and sent troops to attack the British Army stationed in Ukraine, despite lacking any real capability.
“Let’s kill all the imperialist scum and liberate Ukraine!”
“Hurrah!”
“Are these Reds out of their minds? How dare they point their guns at our mighty British Empire that even subdued Jerry bastards?”
At first, alongside the Ukrainian forces organized to suit British tastes, they easily trounced those conscripts, thanks to the experience from the Great War.
However, the numbers were just too overwhelming.
“There are too many of them for us to handle. Those madmen are pushing through with sheer numbers like the Chinese.”
“Damn, request support from White Russia! They’ll also feel the pinch if Ukraine falls to those Reds!”
“Yes!”
The British stationed in Ukraine sent a request for support to the White Army.
After all, being in the position of relying on Britain, they could hardly refuse, nor would they want to feel the blades at their sides.
“Come on, great Red Army! Let’s cross that trench! Let’s topple the imperialist pigs! Hurrah!”
On the other hand, even though the Red Army was supposed to be winning, morale was pretty low.
After all, it was a forcibly conscripted army.
They were pushing the British troops back with weapons pointed at them, but resentment was only growing, and with death inevitable, hostility towards the Bolsheviks increased.
Furthermore, Ukraine wasn’t just populated by the British army.
While they thought they were attacking fellow Reds, they inadvertently turned the anarchists against them and were now dealing with their guerilla warfare.
“Hurrah! Freeze to death! What kind of great Red Army is this? Ah, it is red with blood. Damn!”
“Shh. You’ll get shot by the political officers!”
“If they want to shoot, let them! I didn’t support the Bolsheviks for this!”
The enemy was increasingly disillusioned with the Bolshevik regime.
They thought life would be better if they supported the Bolsheviks compared to the Tsar’s days.
But the reality was far more terrifying.
At least during the Tsar’s reign, the nobles openly flaunted their privileges and abused their power. These Reds claim to be comrades but treat people with authoritarian violence, pointing guns at them when they misbehave.
If anyone didn’t heed the Bolsheviks, they were quickly labeled as counterrevolutionaries and taken away.
This situation was no different.
A political officer quietly watching them pointed his gun at what he deemed a counterrevolutionary spreading subversive ideas.
“This counterrevolutionary bastard!”
Bang!
“Se-Sergey is dead!”
As the political officers fired their guns, the soldiers had no choice but to submit.
However, despite this, the number of officers leading desertions increased daily.
Those who felt betrayed by the Bolsheviks and had hurriedly entered Ukraine under the princess’s orders were now desperately deserting to join the White Army.
“What? The White Army is coming?”
“This is our chance! Let’s desert!”
There’s certainly a limit to how much threats with guns can accomplish.
If there really was no chance, that would be one thing.
But with the British army in front and guns behind them, they had no choice but to charge at the British.
However, the fact that the White Army was close enough to provide a new opportunity was sufficient.
Thus, many who wanted to survive began to flee in large numbers.
Still, the Red Army marching to seize control of Ukraine remained numerous.
* * *
Anton Denikin’s army advanced into eastern Ukraine.
Makhno’s anarchists were eagerly carrying out terror attacks to aid the White Army while harassing the Bolsheviks.
Meanwhile, it was reported that desertions were increasing daily in the Red Army.
That said, the British seemed to be dying in battle with the Red Army instead of us.
Is that really my concern?
Isn’t that a stroke of luck?
If the British were to invade Russia proper, perhaps, but to attack the British for the sake of an independent Ukraine is a different matter.
Even though it’s Ukraine, often referred to as little Russia, I’m sure the conscripted soldiers wouldn’t take kindly to being sent off to die in a war for their selfish interests.
Why should they threaten others to clean up after their mess, especially when they handed everything over to Germany to end the war?
The discontent among conscripted Red soldiers is bound to grow.
“The Bolsheviks are pushing their luck too much.”
“Perhaps they don’t have many chances left, right?”
Kolchak laughed at the Bolsheviks.
Thinking of the true history, he should be grateful to me.
Well, it’s definitely a laughing matter.
The actions the Bolsheviks are trying to take now clearly show they’ve lost the essence of the revolution.
Even though they put the Red Army into action, I can still see them creating propaganda about how strong the Red Army is once they seize Ukraine, claiming imperialism has been defeated!
That’s a clear attempt to divert attention to maintain power.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they started claiming we were their puppets trying to hand Ukraine over to the British.
Regardless, we’re merely dispatched to seize control of eastern Ukraine at the request of Makhno.
Now is the time to strike.
If I think of the current situation of the Soviets, the troops stationed in Ukraine are likely the main body they ambitiously prepared.
What a pity this is.
Honestly, isn’t this our chance?
With forces striking from Finland, the Baltics, and Pyotr Wrangel’s army piercing into Moscow, it might just work.
Even if we can’t wipe out the army in Ukraine, preventing them from taking control is enough.
They’ve pushed hard to entrench themselves in Ukraine.
If they’ve buried themselves in Ukraine, then we should be able to obtain it; it doesn’t make sense to not take Ukraine.
Such a failure in military effort would reflect poorly on the Red Army.
One could say what transpired up to Yekaterinburg was simply a series of events conducted without properly organizing their army.
However, it would be noted that even though the army was hastily formed with officers from the Tsarist era, it had grown significantly in scale.
While it hasn’t been completely restored yet, and the actual historical figure of five million hasn’t materialized, still…
If we can intimidate that army and they fail to take Ukraine, it will be a significant blow.
Stalin would probably appreciate that.
Though, I plan to bring about the collapse of the Soviet Union before he even becomes General Secretary.
If they fail in Ukraine, they can subsequently advance to Moscow.
Once Moscow is reclaimed, that will truly determine the fate of the Soviet Union.
If the birthplace of communism, the Soviet Union, faces defeat, what will other nations become?
It seems the number of communists has significantly increased throughout various countries.
Right. Before that,
It all comes down to whether Anton Denikin can win.
Unless it’s Brusilov, I don’t envision him losing, but, then again, it’s dangerous to presume we won’t.
“Major General Anton Denikin can handle the Bolsheviks in Ukraine, can’t he?”
“He seems to think it’s entirely possible.”
“Let’s not be complacent.”
Since I’m here, he seems to be obedient, but Denikin is a somewhat ambiguous figure to call a master tactician.
Still, if he can’t win against such a pitiful Red Army now, he’d truly be an idiot.
