chapter 34
34 – Leaf-3
“Really? So what did Wade say then?”
Entering the classroom, Claire was smiling awkwardly, surrounded by numerous young ladies.
“It’s just… I asked you to eat together…”
“Really? Where did you go?”
Claire answered in a hesitant voice, as if she had not yet adapted to the onslaught of attention.
“The tavern down there. We all wanted to have an after-party together.”
The other ladies raised their voices as if they were not completely satisfied with Claire’s answer.
“What? A tavern with that kind of atmosphere?”
“Ugh, I guess I’ll have to teach Wade something. There are so many good restaurants nearby! There’s a place I went to last time, and the quality is probably because it was run by a retired royal chef.”
“Still, it’s a tavern? You didn’t drink alcohol? I guess the mood would have improved if you had a drink?”
“No… I didn’t drink a single drink. I just went to eat.”
“What?”
Claire desperately denied it, but her daughters continued to talk about whether she wanted to somehow create a subtle atmosphere between her and me.
“Yes, yes. The alcohol sold in such a strange place must be low-quality, right?”
“That’s right. Can the beer sold in places like that be proper alcohol? The cheap wine sold by street vendors is much better than that, right?”
These are women who learn black magic. Except for a special breed like Katharine, there was no way among them that there was a truly noble and flawless woman.
Of course, the child of a noble family’s concubine will be much nobler than a woman from an ordinary family, but there will also be people among them who grew up quite rough.
It was a very amusing sight for such a person to wash her past and pretend to be a ‘noble daughter who was raised noble all her life.’
“That’s true, but… Wait. No way, what happened next?”
“Even if it’s not you, Claire, with another woman…”
“If you think about it, your team… Everyone except Wade was female, right? Lilian is an elf, her beauty is guaranteed, and Kellin is pretty, just because her face looks a bit fierce… I wonder if Wade is a member of the team. “Did you choose?”
“Wow, Wade did choose it!”
‘No, what if you shake…’
“Really? You didn’t send everyone else away and just have a romantic night out?”
“Well, that’s not true! The dark magicians’ dormitories are located next to each other, so they came back with me!”
“Oh, do you live in a dormitory?”
In an instant, the ladies’ gaze changed. There was still a mixture of good feelings, but the meaning had changed a little.
Just a moment ago, it was like looking at ‘the heroine of a high-quality romance novel’, but now it was like looking at ‘a woman who is different from them and is not a threat.’
I laughed when I saw class division in this situation, but I didn’t really want to blame them.
“But this tournament, you made it to the finals, right?”
“I don’t know if there are any decent houses left around here…”
Claire’s anxious gaze found me.
“Way, Wade! I’ve been waiting for you!”
She jumped up and fell into my arms. She thought the skinship was excessive, but it didn’t seem like there was any intention behind it.
‘It’s nice to have a friend…’
The people Claire was talking to just a moment ago were the daughters of a noble family who had achieved some level of success in black magic.
In other words, it meant that these were the women whom Catherine could touch.
While holding Claire in my arms and looking around her, I met Katharine’s eyes.
“Nice to meet you.”
Katharine stood up gracefully and took a step closer. Her pretty lips opened.
“There were many things I wanted to apologize for and clear up misunderstandings. Could you please accept my apology?”
She tried to pass up what she had done with vague words.
“…During the last match, there were a lot of rude practices.”
In the end, I can’t pressure her without her evidence either.
If I claim that the Behemoth incident was Katarin’s doing, the teachers at the academy will immediately start to be wary of me.
“It doesn’t matter. I had fun too.”
Smiling. There was a charming smile on her lips that could not help but captivate even those who knew that there was a poisonous snake inside it.
‘…I thought it would be like this.’
But that couldn’t be said to be a particularly good thing.
Katarin’s arrogance means that she looks down on her opponents. This means that she chose it as a means to build up her ‘fear’ rather than as a serious enemy to fight against.
“I’m glad you enjoyed it.”
But Katarin’s smile meant that she was looking at her opponent seriously.
No one studies crawling bugs to catch them.
After confirming that the ground is safe for the mangled corpse and blood stains, just hit it with force with the sole of a shoe or another hard object. That’s all.
However, in order for humans to kill humans, they must show a more serious attitude.
Grab a weapon. Human fingernails, claws, and fists are not suitable for knocking down another human being without causing damage.
A counterattack is expected. There is no human being who will not resist or run away from the danger of death. The process of killing a human being is a process that always involves taking damage.
She saw me as a human being.
‘Okay…’
If you think about it, killing a ‘winnable warlock’ might have been easier than killing a bug. Because your shoes won’t get dirty.
Of course, if a person dies, the Academy will be suspicious, but they cannot imprison the daughter of the Erst family without evidence or conduct a coercive investigation.
And for Katharine, killing someone without clear evidence was a terribly simple thing.
But, it’s not me and Claire. At least in this classroom, she was the one whose control didn’t work.
“There’s no need to be too cautious. Our emotions got a little rough, but it’s just a competition, right?”
“That’s right. It’s just a competition.”
Katarin didn’t do her best either.
As the ‘unprepared warlock Katarin’, she would have done her best. However, whether a wizard or a warlock, an ‘unprepared’ wizard cannot be considered to have given his all.
Her next plan will be one that is truly prepared to kill me.
Knowing how powerful I am, I used all the power of her and her family.
Even the smile she is making now is just one of the weapons that ‘Erst Katharin’ can use.
“As a former warlock, a proud talent has been born. Although we were defeated, we can consider him a rival at that level, right?”
‘…Hoo.’
This, too, was an action based on calculation.
Once Katharine was defeated by me, she must have felt threatened by her control.
Warlocks are extremely animalistic. Feeling fear from stronger beings, and surrendering to beings who feel fear.
It was closer to a physiological problem rather than a psychological problem. Because it is not reason, but magic that first notices the thoughts that come out of their heads.
The number of warlocks who follow me instead of her could increase, and there could be a warlock of hers who dreams of rebelling against her by using me as her tool.
There were two ways she could choose. Either be in conflict with me, or make peace with me.
If you think about it, it would have been better to have a confrontation, but Katharine was defeated by me once.
As the atmosphere becomes more hostile, the number of people who question her power increases.
In that case, it would have been better not to reject me.
When power is used. Or, when they collide, superiority and inferiority are clearly revealed.
If she wasn’t confident that she could take me down right away, it was in her interest to fight for power in a way that made her strength less noticeable.
In the end, I was the heir of an unremarkable family, and she was the daughter of the Erst family.
“It is an honor.”
It might be a situation where I have to choose between the princess and Katharine, but I can’t beat Katharine when she bows her head to me first.
In fact, just one of her can defeat her. But the image I had to create would be horribly broken.
Those who deal with the power of light can sometimes be overly paternalistic and simply think, ‘Are you insulting the person who wants to apologize without any evidence?’
It would not be possible to receive the support of the majority of other warlocks. Even the warlocks who could potentially take my side are currently taking Katharine’s side.
If I antagonize Katharine more than necessary, they will give up their thoughts of converting to me.
‘…But, it’s okay for now.’
In the end, the information Katarin can have is limited.
Even if you manage to secure information by going through Kellin’s mind, you will not be able to imagine that I have the ‘undaunted will’ to harness the power of the fragments of the void.
Even if she found out that fact, it doesn’t change the fact that she has no means to fight against her.
Right now, we need to utilize this time. This situation must be used.
It was much better than being in a situation where the atmosphere in the black magic class immediately became dark and it was difficult to even say a word.
‘I don’t know, but it seems like there are a lot of people who know Claire…’
We must somehow find the person with suspicious behavior and find the drug distribution route.
I took a deep sigh and prepared for the class that was about to start.
