chapter 17
17 – Joint Class-6
“Come on!”
“Roar!!!”
Behemoth roars. A dark arrow lodges onto the monster’s body.
Given his age, this would be the first pain he has ever felt.
“Kuh!”
He raises his massive forefoot attempting to trample me. I quickly moved Claire to a safe spot, and again launched a shadow arrow toward him.
An enormous dark arrow that dozens of necromancers couldn’t produce, pierced the monster’s body.
“Argh!”
“He’s got a good set of lungs!”
However, I didn’t have many cards to play.
Mana is practically infinite. The energy obtained from fragments of the void was bottomless.
But for the magic to take effect, my body, which served as a magic faucet, was still human.
Although I may have withstood it better than others, I did not surpass human limitations.
“Roar!”
But the monster, the Behemoth in front of me, was not.
It’s a different breed. Its very presence insulted the gods, and potent mana spewed from its skin and breath.
No matter how strong an ant, it is nearly impossible for it to fight and win against a human. The Behemoth and I had a difference just as great, if not more.
“Hmm!”
With a loud sound, Behemoth stomps his foot. If you get under it, it’s instant death. Even if I narrowly evade it, the shockwave alone would render me incapacitated.
I did not have many spells I could use. All I have are crude, primitive techniques that consume a lot of mana, like a dark arrow and dark shield.
Necromancy is also a study. If there’s a battle between necromancers, it may largely consist of simple and intuitive magic showdowns, but that doesn’t mean there’s no development in necromancy.
It’s gradually improving to use mana more artfully, more accurately, and more efficiently to manifest and eliminate enemies.
And I have yet to learn such advanced necromancy.
“A bit…tricky!”
I did not learn advanced skills like Blink. The ability to teleport one’s body momentarily is not something a novice could learn unless they are as genius as Zhenia.
Necromancers could use magic to temporarily shift themselves into a dark dimension to dodge attacks, but I was not equipped with such skills either.
I didn’t even know how to use it properly, and moreover, as easy as it is this technique is dangerous.
Even necromancers with world-ending powers and notorious reputations have often died just because they misused this skill or due to bad luck.
“Damn it!”
The same goes for physical reinforcement skills. Soaking the body in mana is extremely dangerous, and I couldn’t find a way to secure safety or control the mana.
Yet, the fight occurred fairly evenly.
“Gyaaah!!”
I am slow. Compared to the steel-like muscles of that massive creature, the flesh of a human is endlessly weak.
So, I will have to slow it down.
“Hold your own!”
Into the behemoth’s enormous body, my arrows of darkness relentlessly flew.
They could not each deliver a significant blow. But scores, hundreds of arrows could slow its movements.
I, who had been running regardless, managed to widen the space between the monstrous forefoot and the ground before it made contact.
“Phew…”
The black magic I can use is simple and rudimentary. Anyone who just started studying dark magic would be considered a dunce if they couldn’t use it right away, it’s that easy.
It isn’t a technique for display nor is it particularly effective, but it has a quite useful advantage.
“Die!”
It’s exceedingly simple.
If ordinary magic is like solving a difficult equation, my magic is like performing basic arithmetic.
Even as raindrops fell and the earth shook, even when thousands of distractions occupied my mind, I could still produce scores, hundreds of arrows of darkness.
“Out, out of my way!”
It’s not a disadvantage. My magic was nearly infinite, and it’s not that the arrows of darkness couldn’t harm the behemoth.
But my body couldn’t hold on any longer.
It was already weary from mountain climbing. I hadn’t had enough sleep.
An excess of trivial, ridiculously small problems were adding to the conflict.
How long can I last?
I don’t know. I know how much of my magic is left, but I don’t know how much longer my body can hold out.
My clothes, soaked with rainwater, were gradually becoming heavier. In just a few seconds, I might trip over my own feet.
“I can…run.”
I know what the problem is.
With this level of amateurish magic, with these restrained arrows of darkness, I cannot decisively finish off the behemoth.
I would have sacrifice more. Considering there’s no healer nearby, I should be prepared to leave permanent scars on my body.
“…”
Or, I have to give up on Claire.
If I exhaust all the magic I have to throw the monster into confusion, I can somehow escape.
But, then Claire dies. The girl I’ve invested so much in, the friend who till the very end spared me her harm, dies.
“No backup…”
It may be too late, and I may not be given a chance to choose.
“Grrraaah!!”
The behemoth roared once more.
A roar so powerful that everyone on the mountain could hear, echoed throughout.
/////
“It’s interesting.”
Although the rain was pouring, a calm surrounded Cataleene.
As if time had stopped, an obsidian-like darkness enveloped her.
“Miss?”
Fear was mingled in Kellin’s eyes. Looking at this, Katarin let out a faint smile.
How foolish…
She must have known too. The fact that she was strangely excluded from the recent conspiracies that were happening.
There was a reason for it. Dealing with a secret society was not something that could be done using just a somewhat loyal subordinate, from contact to implementation.
“It’s okay, isn’t it? It’s going well, right?”
Katarin recalled the secret society that had been conspiring within the academy.
The organization seeking destruction, calling themselves ‘Kazot’
There’s no way a man like Wade just appears for no reason…
A man hiding his true powers. Thinking that a human talented in black magic would just happen to show up at the academy was a lazy thought. Not doubting was a sin.
And the only organization capable of nonchalantly planting such a dark magician agent in the academy was none other than ‘Kazot’.
If they didn’t touch me first, I wouldn’t have interfered.
Behemoth and Wade. They must have been assets deployed into the academy in hopes of massive returns within their larger plans.
Whatever they did in the academy was none of Katarin’s concern, but sadly, Wade provoked Katarin first.
Ruining their plan was such an easy and simple task.
An extreme point organization where a long-time member may not know who the other members are… It is interesting, but dangerous, isn’t it?
Commands that no one, not even the sender, knows due to encryption with black-magic.
Manipulating such commands was too easy and simple for Katarin.
“The assets set to be wasted on useless work, just consider me using them for good.”
Surely, they could shake up the academy with these kinds of assets if they decide to cause terror.
However, they can’t achieve significant results. They can’t kill the princess or cause chaos spread out of the academy with just this much.
The best they could do is to consume the meaningless lives of a few innocent students and feel a vain satisfaction of having accomplished something.
She too, must have been afraid of that, right?
Katarin looked at Kellin as if it was comical.
“The magic of Behemoth has covered the vicinity. Black magicians in the lower part of the mountains… Their nerves might slightly sharpen, but that won’t be the case for those above, will it?”
There aren’t many black magicians who can resist such a massive magic beast.
Even if Wade is an agent put in by Kazot, he won’t be able to resist here.
Even if he somehow resists, it doesn’t matter.
The woman who was with him was indisputably an ordinary woman who hid nothing.
She will definitely thrust a knife into the princess. And then, unable to resist, she will die.
Imagining the future, Katarin wore a satisfied smile.
“Miss…”
However, her worry was misplaced. Katarin misjudged Kellin’s expression.
Kellin being afraid was correct but the cause and target were completely twisted.
“Miss, please do not antagonize that man…”
Just because he is a black magician, does not mean he lacks personal feelings.
It doesn’t mean he lacks loyalty, nor does it mean he lacks love for the master he has served for so long.
It’s just that, there is an entity that he fears more.
Who knows how much power he might be hiding…
Not reporting this conspiracy to him was Kellin’s last line of resistance.
She didn’t want Katarina to be destroyed. Thus, she only wished not to tamper with that unknown entity.
The possibility, even negligible, that he could harm him through Katarina’s plot, wasn’t even an afterthought.
Hopefully, may it pass without causing any issue…
