Ch. 8 - The Curious One, Yuriana
He lost his temper at a command from the boss when Leticia came running over in a hurry for the second time, and finally, he was too exhausted to get angry again.
This was what happened when someone constantly lost their temper.
At six years old, Asil’s daughter suddenly stood up.
“Off we go.”
“Oh… Miss?”
“They say strike while the iron is hot. I’ll go now. It’s only been a day, but I hope Chef Sheldon has calmed down a bit.”
“No, it’s alright! You… don’t have to go.”
The kitchen, which Yuriana had frequented, was now closed.
Because… it needed a few days of ventilation to clean up the unexpected bloodstains on the floor.
Levina, flustered, quickly stood up and blocked Yuriana.
“… Levina?”
“The thing is, Chef Sheldon has left Dark House. No, Dark Town.”
“What?”
Levina wasn’t particularly good at lying, unlike people from Dark Town.
But in this situation, she had to muster all her strength to come up with a pure white lie.
How could she tell her that her father had disposed of those two?
“Well, you see, he requested to study more delicious recipes, so he went to the kingdom to learn cooking.”
Given the bread, cookies, and sausages he had tasted yesterday, there was no need for that.
The food Sheldon had served through the maid was terrible, and it was clear he had made it that way
The food on the tray on the first day and the cookies from yesterday were all terrible.
Sheldon, like Leticia, didn’t particularly like Yuriana.
His cooking was already top-notch, but he made it taste bad on purpose because he found Yuriana annoying and troublesome.
That said, Leticia and Sheldon had both gone to the kingdom?
Yuriana asked again without stopping.
“So, the two of them might meet in the kingdom?”
Levina coughed for some reason and replied.
“Yes… Miss. They might meet somewhere.”
Technically, they’d meet in the graveyard of the dead, not the kingdom of the living.
“Hmm…”
“Miss, let’s have breakfast first. I’ll bring it to you, so wait inside, okay?”
“Alright.”
Having somewhat grasped the situation, Yuriana stopped asking questions.
And so began a smooth routine with Levina taking care of Yuriana.
Since Levina was older and more compassionate than Leticia, it was easier for her to care for Yuriana.
“Wow! So pretty!”
“Both fancy and simple dresses suit you well, Miss.”
Wearing a light blue striped dress made of cotton, Yuriana was excited.
Her hair was braided in pigtails. And she loved the time in the small garden attached to the annex, where Levina would let her play with flowers and read fairy tales to her.
Like how she quickly understood the language here, she could read the letters in the books as if she had known them all along.
However, Yuriana pretended not to be able to read yet to avoid suspicion.
She had to be careful.
If she aroused suspicion, she’d be done for, even if she resembled Asil. She wasn’t Alice.
Her current life was very good.
‘Hmm…’
The clothes were much prettier than the rags Leticia had brought, and the food was delicious.
A new chef had been hired, and Lulu’s food was upgraded to premium, which was reassuring.
‘I’ll put all the good food in my album.’
Since falling into Dark Town, these were the quietest and most peaceful days for Yuriana.
* * *
Only a few days later.
Ldvina prepared to leave for the kingdom, leaving Yuriana in the care of the newly assigned maid, Benny.
The variety of goods in Dark Town was limited.
To get something for the children, one had to go to the kingdom’s capital.
‘I need toys and textbooks to teach Miss the kingdom’s language.’
Levina’s plan to leave quietly was thwarted when Yuriana noticed her outdoor shawl and large bag.
“Levina, you’re going to the kingdom, right? I want to go too!”
“Oh… Miss.”
“We might meet Leticia and Chef Sheldon there. Right? Right?”
Alas, it would be better if she forgot those two names!
Levina tried to calm the insistent Yuriana.
“The kingdom’s streets are old and crowded. Today, I’m going shopping, so it’s hard to hold your hand and tour around. How about we plan another trip later?”
“Really, we can’t go?”
When her request was denied, she didn’t cry or stomp her feet to trouble the adults. She simply reiterated her point.
Levina avoided Yuriana’s wide-eyed gaze and muttered.
“I’ll bring back some delicious candies for you…”
The reason for her hesitation was simple.
Levina wasn’t in a low position in Dark Town, especially in Dark House.
Given her experience and abilities, she could do a wide range of tasks.
For instance, she could go to the kingdom’s capital to buy things without reporting to the higher-ups.
But an outing with the boss’s daughter was a different story.
She would definitely need Asil’s approval, and…
‘… it might just be my thought. But that’s probably it. The boss hasn’t forgotten her, which is why he hasn’t come to this annex. If I take Miss Yuriana to the kingdom now, it will only remind him of his grief.’
Asil had suffered twice because of Alice’s incident.
Levina knew about it but didn’t mention it carelessly.
There was no need to.
Levina wanted Asil Litus to live a long and healthy life to rule Dark Town.
When there was no proper boss or when there was a too powerful one, Dark Town would always fall into chaos.
From Levina’s perspective.
Asil was just right for holding the power and financial relations in Dark Town.
There was no better alternative at the moment.
If Asil decided to go to the kingdom out of longing for that woman… it would be troublesome.
“Alright.”
“Miss, please behave. And even if you didn’t know before, you mustn’t go through the trees behind the annex now. There’s magic there. If you try to leave, it could hurt you, and it’s the same from the opposite direction.”
“Hmm? Is that so? First time I’ve heard of it.”
“Yes. I’ll be back. If you get sleepy, ask Benny to read you a fairy tale.”
As expected, she hadn’t told her about that.
Levina felt a new wave of anger towards the deceased Leticia.
“Okay. Have a good trip, Levina. Kiss.”
“Yes.”
Yuriana pulled Levina’s collar towards her.
Levina habitually knelt, and Yuriana puckered her lips and kissed her on the cheek.
‘So… cute.’
To receive a goodbye kiss directly from the boss’s daughter.
Yuriana was not only cute, but this kiss somehow made her feel the thrill of power.
At this moment, the only person in the world to receive this precious kiss was Levina.
Even the boss hadn’t experienced this kiss!
‘What am I thinking! I’m going crazy, I’ll end up like Leticia if I’m not careful. Focus, Levina. Arrogance ruins people quickly.’
“I’ll be back.”
“Okay!”
With a red face, Levina waved and left.
As soon as Levina was gone, Yuriana, with eyes full of innocent mischief, spoke.
“Benny, read me a book.”
“Already? Okay. Go lie on the bed, Miss.”
If Benny put Yuriana to sleep, she would have at least two hours of freedom. She didn’t dislike that.
The naive maid confirmed that Yuriana had fallen asleep before she could finish reading a fairy tale.
‘She’s really sleeping… right?’
The little miss, with her tiny lips parted, was asleep. She could leave her here.
For a six-year-old, she was surprisingly articulate and pleasant.
‘Hehe.’
As Benny was about to get up.
The cat, which had been quiet until then, let out a discontented meow.
“Meow…”
“Shh! Be quiet, you’ll wake the Miss.”
“Meow!”
The cat rolled its golden eyes and meowed again, but Benny, full of plans to play, tiptoed out quickly.
About ten minutes later.
“Hehe…”
Pretending to sleep, Yuriana stretched and prepared to move.
One must sneak out and play while the adults were away to have real fun.
“Meow!”
Knowing Yuriana’s little tricks, Lulu jumped down from the shelf.
No one would guess where she would go this time, after having gone to the black forest once.
Yuriana grabbed the annoying cat and put it back on the shelf.
“This time, I’m not going out of the mansion. I’ll just wander around inside. I’m not going far, so you stay here.”
“Meow?”
“Really. If you don’t want to play, just sleep or do whatever you want. Here, take this.”
Yuriana threw a smoked sausage she took from her album.
Lulu, like a circus animal, caught it in her mouth and retreated into her hideaway.
Freedom!
Now that she was alone, Yuriana quietly opened the door and sneaked out halfway down the hallway.
Dark House was very quiet.
‘This is the annex, and Asil is in the main building, which is completely separate. Will I never see him?’
Levina said Asil had personally brought her back when she ran away.
