Ch. 4 - The Feeling of Not Being Noticed
“… Boss?”
Leticia tried to interrupt Asil’s thoughts, but he raised his hand. It meant to wait silently.
Being merely a subordinate, she immediately closed her mouth.
Leticia wanted to seduce Asil and make him hers if given the chance.
Even if she knew there were probably over a hundred women in Dark Town with the same dream, she had to try if it was possible.
Asil’s thoughts drifted back to recent times.
An event more bizarre than all the others combined.
The existence of Yuriana!
One day, he suddenly realized he had a daughter named Yuriana.
He even surmised that the child must be somewhere in Dark Town, crying.
It was astonishing because he hadn’t even had a prophetic dream.
Asil had sent the cursed cat-beast, Lupedos, to protect her, but neither had appeared before him.
Ten days later, his daughter, who had been wandering the dark alleys, revealed herself by loudly calling Asil’s name.
How could this phenomenon be explained?
Asil found it hard to discern whether he was dreaming or lost in reality.
He knew at first glance that Yuriana, who bore a striking resemblance to him, was undoubtedly his daughter.
There could only be one woman who bore Yuriana.
The woman who left his side one day and collapsed and died on her way back to Dark Town.
What could have happened during the year she was missing?
It was hard to gauge since he found her long after she had passed.
But who, or what, let her and him know they were father and daughter, Yuriana? Did she know?
“… I don’t know.”
“What?”
Leticia, who had been waiting for a chance to show off her seductive charms, jerked her head up.
“I might be hallucinating in a long dream.”
“Do you need something?”
Asil sighed lightly and asked.
“Leticia. You said the child’s memories were unclear. What do you think, objectively?”
Leticia responded without much thought.
“She looks about six years old. She speaks quite well, and her questions are sharp, so she seems to have received a decent education.”
She was essentially commenting on her home education in front of her father.
Asil didn’t get angry about that. In this regard, he resembled Yuriana, which was almost frightening.
“Six years old…”
Six years.
Asil once broke into the palace to show off his abilities as soon as he came of age.
About seven years ago, without a map of the palace or the intention to steal anything, he carried out a bold theft.
In hindsight, it was close to youthful folly, but it was within understandable limits.
Anyone entering Dark Town for the first time thought they were invincible.
At that time, although he had just become the leader after many struggles, he was still immature. Young men were like that.
In retrospect, it was a miracle he returned unscathed.
The late queen, Amira, was a formidable sorceress. Asil was naturally resistant to magic, but that ability strengthened over time, so had he been caught back then, he would have faced dire consequences.
His magic resistance grew stronger immediately after Amira’s death.
Oddly enough.
“What should we do?”
Asil shook his head at Leticia’s words.
“Never mind. I don’t want to see that child for a while, so take good care of her. Ask the steward for the budget and manage it.”
With a headache, he delegated Yuriana’s matters to Leticia.
He didn’t even mention Lupedos.
Now that Yuriana was in Dark House, she wouldn’t die a meaningless death. That should suffice.
“Then…”
“Leave now.”
“Understood!”
Leticia turned away from the thoughtful boss, smiling broadly.
Instead of love and power, she now had an easy opportunity to make money. Might as well take advantage of it, right?
Unfortunately, Asil’s ambiguous orders turned out to be a bad move for Yuriana.
True to her Dark Town nature, Leticia was quick-witted.
Looking closely or not, Yuriana was undeniably Asil’s spitting image, making it impossible not to acknowledge her as his daughter.
However, she had no intention of treating her like a princess. Why miss this opportunity?
‘Hmph, it was worth using formal speech and not trembling during our first meeting. At least you weren’t sold off as a slave. Not starving and having shelter is living well in Dark Town. I’ll make sure you live at an appropriate level.’
She promptly pocketed the money allocated for Yuriana and instead of buying the promised new clothes, she dressed her in ragged beggar clothes.
Even so, she had a maid wash them, so they weren’t filthy.
She even delegated Yuriana’s baths to the kitchen maid. Whether she did them or not was none of her concern.
Leticia swore she was doing her best. This was how one lived in Dark Town!
Two weeks after Yuriana was taken into Dark House.
“Hmph…”
Yuriana sat on the bed, swinging her legs.
Her light blue eyes were devoid of any vibrant spark.
She was bored.
Frankly, when she realized her life wouldn’t be easily threatened in Asil’s hands, she couldn’t deny she had some expectations.
Not as the heroine Alice, nor as Alice’s friend, but as Asil’s daughter.
The only daughter of the boss who ruled Dark Town!
Leticia, who had promised toys while bathing her, had given nothing, and the clothes she received afterward were in terrible condition…
To put it bluntly, they were worse than the dress she was wearing when she first woke up in this body.
Looking down, she saw the drab ochre dress. It looked like a sack rather than a proper dress.
The only good thing about this outfit was its durability and lack of loose threads. And that was it.
‘No, I was too greedy. Not starving is good enough.’
The best meal she had in this place was the tray Leticia brought on the first day.
From the second day on, it was replaced with slightly stale bread, soup, and vegetable salad, and now she had to fend for herself.
If she was hungry, she had to ask the kitchen maid for food, and the maid would provide it.
Even that was becoming more meager due to the head chef Sheldon’s watchful eye…
It was a bit sad. Not very, just a little.
“What should I do?”
“Meow?”
Asil brought Yuriana to Dark House, but he didn’t seem likely to become a doting father.
Indeed, Asil’s rough nature didn’t suit being a doting father.
Hmm… if the second male lead, the elf Heidel, had a daughter, would he become one?
No idea. Aidan, being a king, would probably maintain his dignity. Heh.
Yuriana looked at Lulu rolling around on the bed and spoke.
“Lulu, if we keep living like this, we’ll end up poor again. Do you know of any way to earn pocket money in Dark Town?”
“Meow!”
Lulu seemed to roll its eyes and buried its head in the hideout.
Oh, really?
Yuriana narrowed her eyes, picked up an empty food bowl, and shook it in front of the cat.
“Look. If your food runs out, they won’t refill it. Haven’t you gone without jerky for a long time? Do you want to starve together and eat vegetable gruel? People can survive on a little vegetarian diet, but you’re a cat. Cats need meat!”
“Meow!”
Suddenly, Lulu’s eyes seemed to blaze with anger.
Good.
People needed to rally others to form a group.
Taking advantage of her opportunity to talk, Yuriana kept babbling to the innocent cat.
“Listen, Lulu. Dad doesn’t seem to want to kill me. But he doesn’t want to treat me well either. Umm… he knows I’m his daughter. If I go for a walk, he won’t send assassins to kill me. Right?”
Asil was the second most ruthless character after Amira.
In his first meeting with Alice, didn’t he stab a dagger into the table claiming to be scamming her? Ugh.
Later, he even executed a subordinate who was a spy.
The heroine Alice was terrified and fell to the floor, but Asil offered her his blood-stained hand.
Very casually, as if nothing had happened.
Of course, Alice, in her typical fashion, wiped the blood off his hand with a handkerchief, but it was a chilling scene.
A typical obsessive male lead.
‘I can’t live just anywhere as this body, and since Leticia hasn’t visited, it’s time to explore around Dark House. I need to find a way to earn money for snacks.’
“Hmmm… what should I do?”
“Meow?”
“Yeah, that’s it!”
Yuriana remembered something and clenched her fist.
In the female-oriented game
This contributed to the ending score.
The collection consisted of twelve items and missing even one prevented access to the true happy ending route.
‘While progressing through Asil’s route, you can find silk moths in the western part of Dark Town. They’re a type of moth that turns into butterflies and leaves behind empty cocoons. Hehe, I should utilize that.’
In a female-oriented game, what was the point of delicately depicting moths?
Players would freak out and write negative reviews like, “Ew! Don’t play this game. There are moths! Beware of moth phobia!”
Alice, upon entering the western part of Dark Town, had a butterfly land on her fingertip, and after it flew away, she discovered an empty cocoon.
A cocoon that produced silk without boiling it! Perfect for earning money.
‘If I can find and raise those butterflies, I’ll be rich.’
Yuriana didn’t consider the hard labor of spinning and weaving the silk.
‘But I saw choices before I fainted. Was that… a dream?’
Even though she had been eating well and living comfortably for a few days, she still wanted to deny reality.
