I Became a Police Officer in a Superhero Genre

Chapter 40 - Even in This World, Police Chase Criminals(8)

“[ Currently, reports have been received of screams and loud noises from E Corporation’s research lab. Local police have been dispatched. ]”

“[ The local police reported that there are multiple superpower users at the scene, numbering at least 20. The superpower users are not leaving the research lab building and are interfering with those trying to enter. ]”

“[ Currently, the personnel dispatched from the local police station have completed isolating the scene, but are unable to enter the interior. The current situation at the scene is classified as Code 0. ]”

Field reports transmitted from the situation room. Only silence flowed among the police who heard those reports.

Most of the police that could be mobilized, including the Special Investigation Team, Violent Crimes Unit, Narcotics Unit, and others, are gathered and moving forward, but apart from the sound of engines and breathing as the cars advance, no other sound can be heard.

It was natural. On average, it takes 10 detectives armed with guns and other support to barely stop one rampaging superpower user.

Even if there are injuries and deaths in the process, dealing with superpower users is so dangerous that police officers already shake their heads as if giving up, saying it can’t be helped.

The protective gear prepared by the damn higher-ups is worse than trash. At least what they have in their hands are guns, which they’ve rarely seen work against superpower users.

The original plan was to quickly enter the research lab where Minus is, with the aim of suppressing him before he could use other methods, but that plan has already become impossible.

The secret arrest operation leaked out from somewhere, and the supervillain made the first move. At least 20 superpower users are rampaging at the scene, and can they arrest Minus when they arrive at the scene?

Everyone kept that question unspoken. They couldn’t speak it. They already knew the answer, and if they admitted there was nothing they could do, it would be denying the meaning of the uniforms they wore.

As they got closer to the scene, even veteran detectives were accumulating anxiety and fear in their eyes. Suddenly, a voice came through on their radios.

“[Hello. This is Inspector Lee Mun-su in charge of field command. 10 minutes until arrival at the scene. We’ve passed Olympic-daero and are almost there.]”

It was the voice of Lee Mun-su, who had been put in charge of field command. Many of the detectives who heard that voice frowned.

A detective who recently became famous through the media and even got a special promotion to inspector, and consequently became hated.

Of course, getting your name in the media and getting a special promotion itself isn’t that special. But the rumors about that man are strangely inflated with slander and insults.

In the end, there’s one reason. Jealousy.

They’re also risking their lives to fight for citizens and the country, so why do they get cursed while only that man gets praised by people?

The more famous Detective Lee Mun-su becomes, the more the media talks about the uselessness of other police officers. Accordingly, the theory of police uselessness is growing among civilians, which was very unfair for police officers.

For example, there’s the incident commonly called the Justice Incident, where someone called Justice was about to be appointed as an official government hero but was prevented by Inspector Lee Mun-su’s activities.
Is there anyone in the police who doesn’t know about the incident where the higher-ups did things as they pleased, and when Detective Lee Mun-su took down Justice [though it’s questionable how he did it], they blamed the police for not properly supervising that son of a bitch?

It’s still okay when they spout nonsense about police uselessness, saying ordinary police can defeat superpower users too, so why isn’t everyone doing anything.
But who could have good feelings towards that man when citizens and media point fingers at and insult even the police officers who lost their lives trying to stop that guy as incompetent, while praising only that guy?

It was a truly unfair situation for both ordinary detectives and Inspector Lee Mun-su, where even people who didn’t have bad feelings towards him started to dislike Detective Lee Mun-su for no reason.

“[ As you’ve probably heard, a large number of superpower users have reportedly appeared at E Corporation’s research lab. This is the worst-case scenario we anticipated, and the scene is extremely dangerous. ]”

The faces of the detectives who heard the radio from someone with an already bad image twisted. Who doesn’t know that? But saying it out loud only makes people aware of the subtly flowing fear.

It was absolutely something a field commander should never do. Why on earth is this guy doing this?

Even those in the Special Investigation Team who knew him frowned as they looked at their radios, but Lee Mun-su, who would be in Sai’s car as her deputy, continued speaking regardless.

“[ I know many people dislike me. It’s a shitty story that someone without enough years of service is in field command. Some might think this incident wouldn’t have happened if I had properly arrested the Minus bastard before. I understand. ]”

At his tone speaking as if it was no big deal, some police officers rolled their eyes and looked around at others.

Those who had mockingly said this incident was his fault for not arresting Minus at that time shrank at his tone that seemed to have read their thoughts,

But most people couldn’t understand what he was trying to say, so they just continued their silence and waited for him to continue speaking.

“[ So I won’t say much. Here’s how to deal with Minus bastard’s ability. Don’t inhale the drugs he’s sprayed, don’t directly touch his body. ]”

“[ …As you know, superpower users who have just awakened have no reason. Those bastards will attack people in front of them first, and while drawing their attention, if we go up and just arrest Minus, this incident will be over. ]”

The police listening to Lee Mun-su’s radio felt at a loss for words.

What was contained in those calmly transmitted words was something that should be called responsibility and will. It even seemed to be imbued with the fighting spirit of rushing at Minus as soon as they arrived at the scene.

Speaking about himself not arresting Minus in this situation is probably a declaration of will that he won’t make a mistake this time.

The police listening to the radio realized what he was trying to do, and everyone thought they should stop him.
Whether they like him or not, it’s nonsense for the person in charge of field command to rush into that hellish scene.

He must know he’ll die if he goes. Has he become arrogant from getting famous recently and thinks he’s immortal and won’t die?

Some people were dumbfounded, unable to understand Lee Mun-su’s thoughts, but there was no sign of that kind of foolishness characteristic of idiots in his voice.

“[ …Take care of yourself. Don’t get hurt, let’s give it a try. ]”
What does this mean? Lee Mun-su didn’t think he wouldn’t die.
Even though it was clearly a place where he would die, despite everyone being afraid, he was saying he would move forward without hesitation as a ‘police officer’. And there was no one here who could stop him.

At that one phrase, even those who disliked Inspector Lee Mun-su, those who were indifferent, and those who didn’t view him favorably, all strangely felt their fear and terror disappearing.

Or more precisely, they gained the courage to overcome such fear. beings are such ridiculous creatures that they can be broken down by a single word, but can also gain courage from a single word.

People thought while biting their lips. Even if they’re cursed as worms, even if there’s nothing they can do, they’ll do their best as much as they can. That’s the reason why those wearing uniforms are here.

Those who had been advancing quietly all turned on their sirens. The sound of sirens began to resound loudly in the middle of the city.

We’ve almost arrived at the scene. As I reached a position where I could see the research lab where Minus was supposed to be, I thought while looking at the huge dome-shaped building here.

That E Corporation research lab near the Han River Bridge is the first building that catches the eye when you cross the bridge by car.

Usually, the area around it is so well-maintained that kids from nearby middle schools or elementary schools often come here when they go on field trips,

And since it’s included in the Han River Park walking trail, many people come around the area for exercise, but-

What I saw when I almost reached the scene today was far from such a peaceful atmosphere.

“Wow. Why do they all look like that?”

“F-Fuck……”

The local police surrounding the research lab visible in the distance were all frozen, not doing anything.

Normally I would have cursed at why those bastards were standing there blankly, but
Seeing the scene before my eyes, I honestly thought there’s nothing else to do but stand blankly with hands down looking at that.

How could they do anything when people with vicious appearances, like having huge blades growing from their hands or mantis-like hands, were standing like mannequins around the research lab, blocking people from approaching?

Judging by their clothes, they seem to be simple researchers and researchers who remained in the building.
It was really shitty that we couldn’t tell if they were criminals under Minus bastard or just poor ordinary people who got caught up in this.

I bit my lip in anxiety as I watched the scene that kept getting closer.

The research lab building isn’t an ordinary 2-3 story building, but one built half like a landmark, so there are many places to enter but just as many places to escape.

Normally we’d worry about Minus escaping with so many escape routes, but now the worry is that we don’t know where superpower users might pop out from in that building.

I don’t know exactly what plan that smart bastard is plotting, but it’s certain he’s trying to break through the surrounding police to find Sai.

In the midst of that, why would the Minus bastard just leave the surrounding police alone? He’d kill everyone in sight.

The remaining hope is still New Hope. I wonder if that kid has mobilized by now? I looked at the sky through the open car window, but I couldn’t see anything black streaking across the sky.

Let’s see. Calculating the straight-line distance from where Mina lives to here – it would take at least 10 minutes for her to arrive, no matter how fast she is.

If possible, the most comfortable scenario for me to survive would be for the police to just surround and waste time until New Hope arrives, then New Hope appears with a ‘tada!’ and solves everything, but……

“Deputy Chief. We’ve almost arrived.”

That’s probably impossible with this bitch next to me. Since she said strange things mentioning being my deputy, it’s certain she’s plotting something again.

If I could, I really would have turned back time to before this bitch returned to the team, written my resignation, and left.

I nodded at Sai’s words while chewing over regrets. She was holding the steering wheel with a subtle smile. She continued speaking while smiling and looking ahead.

“Honestly. I was a bit hurt that you always went around alone. But this time, let’s definitely do this together.”

I hear an ominous sound of the engine revving. I hear the sound of tires screeching as they turn sharply, and even the scenery beyond the windshield shows trees and bushes instead of the road… huh?

Wait a minute, what crazy thing is this?

“This is Sai. As per Inspector Lee Mun-su’s strategy just now, I will enter first to draw attention. I’ll leave subsequent field command to others. Then, I’m counting on you for backup.”

What nonsense is this? Why is the car going in a strange direction? Before I could ask, I realized the direction the car was heading and almost bit my tongue.

This crazy bitch! It’s a straight line! She’s going in a straight line! Ignoring the road to the research lab, ignoring trees and bushes! Straight ahead!

“If you need my help, just tell me anytime. I’ll – always be ready to help you, Deputy Chief.”

“What?! No?! Hey!!”

What the hell is this crazy bitch doing?!

Sai turned the steering wheel while her eyes glowed blue, looking as if she was going crazy with joy.
The car deviated from the line and went in a strange direction, but oddly enough, the other police didn’t stop our car.

Why aren’t they stopping us?! As I was wondering, I suddenly realized that my words could have been interpreted as meaning I would go in first alone to draw attention.

But still! Even so! The field commander says he’s going into that hell and they just let him?! Even if there are many who dislike me, isn’t this too much?!

I want to argue that the police shouldn’t allow such crazy acts, but the first thing I needed to do was fasten my seatbelt.

I tried to quickly fasten my seatbelt while trembling in fear. But whether because my hands were sweaty or because of fear, I kept fumbling.

Oh my God! This bitch is finally trying to kill me! And with a car accident of all things!

I prayed to God to please stop the car, but the car moves forward regardless. It moves forward. The car that moved forward avoiding thick trees and smashing through bushes-

Just like a missile, it floated in the air, flew over the blockade of local police, hit a superpower user with blades on his arms who was guarding the entrance of the research lab, and crashed into the building.

Is it because death is imminent? I could see in slow motion the entire moment Sai’s car smashed through the front glass doors along with the poor superpower user.

I could also see Sai using her hair to tie herself to the car. Then her figure moved away from me and became invisible-
That’s right. I, who didn’t have the same ability as her and couldn’t properly fasten my seatbelt in time, was thrown forward through the window according to the laws of physics.

“Fu-Fuck!!”

Glass scattering in the air. The car crumpling. It was a situation that would normally be hard to survive.

Is it that misfortune is followed by fortune? Comically, I rolled on the ground but miraculously managed not to get hurt thanks to performing a perfect breakfall that I had never succeeded in before.

The only problem is – there are a bunch of superpower users in front of me, foaming at the mouth and looking down at me.

Sai got out of the car, which was completely smashed in the front bumper and spewing smoke. I confirmed her appearance, then looked again at the superpower users with bizarre appearances in front of me.

And without realizing it, one phrase popped out of my mouth.

“Isn’t this really too much?”

If you’re going to kill me, just kill me comfortably, fuck. I quietly swallowed my tears as I heard the sirens sounding behind me.
