Chapter 5 – Heir to the Light of the Holy King (5)
-Heir to the light.
-Hold high the sword of the Holy King.
It was both a bold call and a whisper.
But it was not close.
The voice seemed to come from far away, barely reaching his ears.
Yoo-seong slowly opened his eyes.
Rene’s face was nowhere to be seen.
What he saw was stars, countless lights and stars above the black, dark night sky.
For the first time in his life, Yoo-seong realized the phrase “many stars,” as if they were about to fall.
It was certainly a black and dark night, but that’s why I could recognize the light of each star clearly.
-Child of the stars.
-You rise from the dusk to lead the dawn.
Feeling as if he was being sucked in, Yoo-seong looked up at the night sky and followed the voice.
As he looked at the night sky, he saw a lake filled with starlight.
A calm lake.
The wind is blowing from far away.
The sound of grasshoppers tickling his ears.
But it was only for a moment.
A fog from nowhere enveloped the lake, and he could only make out the outline of an object in the blur.
It was a sword.
A sword, half-submerged in the lake’s surface, seemingly embedded in it.
As soon as I saw it, the name of a sword immediately came to mind.
It was the sword of the Holy King, forged from starlight, a golden sun symbolizing liberation but Yoo-seong couldn’t bring himself to say the name.
It was as if he was not yet allowed to speak the name of the Holy Sword so he just stared at it.
Then the voice spoke again.
-You, the one who will carry on the light of the Holy King.
-At last, the light has been discovered beyond the barrier.
The owner of the mysterious voice could also be guessed.
He wanted to try to talk to her, but once again, it was impossible.
She was unreachable.
It was possible to hear the voice of the Goddess of the Lake, but it was impossible for Yoo-seong to convey his voice to her.
That was the limit.
As the mist of the lake grew thicker and thicker, the goddess’s voice, weaker and thinner than it had been a moment ago, came through.
-Rise at dusk, you who will dispel the darkness of night and usher in the glory of morning.
-I will fulfill three of your desires when you overcome the Era of the Ominous Star and usher in a new era.
That was it.
The mist filled his vision, and Yoo-seong’s eyes closed again in awe but strangely enough, his thoughts became clearer.
‘So, I just connected with the Goddess of the Lake.’
The Goddess of the Lake was the one who gave King Arthur Pendragon the magic sword Excalibur.
It was also the Goddess of the Lake who had brought Yoo-seong to this world.
‘The Era of the Ominous Star.’
Was the reason why the Goddess of the Lake brought Yoo-seong to this world and the situation that Yoo-seong had to face.
I felt my breath catch in my throat.
I had already guessed it in my head, but knowing with my head and understanding with my heart were two different things.
I was in another world, a world on the brink of destruction.
To survive, I have to keep fighting and win.
Yoo-seong consciously took a deep breath to calm himself.
Instead of bemoaning the situation that was already in front of him, he looked at reality.
‘The words that followed after the Era of the Ominous Star.’
-If you can overcome the Era of the Ominous Star and save the human world, I will grant you three wishes.
It still sounded like a far-off future, but at least the goal and reward were clear.
That would give him a sense of direction for the immediate future.
Yoo-seong opened his eyes.
This time, it was real.
Blinking a few times, swallowing in the cold night air, he looked to the side.
He could see Rene, curled up in a ball, sleeping soundly, her cloak covering her entire body.
But she felt a little different than she had before he fell asleep.
“Ah.”
I could tell.
[The King’s Wizard]
Rene Baltois
Occupation: Wizard
Status: Count Baltois Second Daughter
Rene has been added to the status window.
The King’s Wizard.
‘Does this mean I can now raise Rene like the rest of the Legion?’
It seemed possible but it didn’t seem like she could be summoned like Kate or the serf troops.
I didn’t have a clear explanation for this, but it was more of a gut feeling, a natural realization.
“Mmph…….”
Rene let out a pained whimper, not sure if she felt Yoo-seong’s gaze or if she was dreaming.
Yoo-seong glanced at Rene, then sat up and took a fresh look around.
It was a very deep night with a sea of stars, just like in his dreams…and flames.
Smoke was rising from something so far away-
After a moment of stunned silence, Yoo-seong opened his eyes wide again.
It was far away, but there was definitely fire and smoke.
And given the direction, it was clearly outside the forest.
So where was the fire coming from?
This time, he had a hunch.
No, there was only one conclusion that could be drawn immediately, even with rational reasoning.
“Rene! Wake up! Rene!”
“Ahhh, Robin. Just a little more…….”
“Wake up! There’s a fire!”
Instead of shaking her shoulders, Yoo-seong pulled Rene to her feet.
Rene’s eyes widened in surprise as she stared at the night sky in a daze.
“Is this the direction of the village?”
“Oh, I think so!”
The two of them had been traveling through the forest, not knowing the exact path or where they were but now they knew exactly where the village was.
“Up!”
Yoo-seong turned his back, and Rene jumped up and clung to his back.
Yoo-seong sped off in the direction of the flames, and Rene immediately cast her magic.
“Bird of Light, take flight!”
The bird of light responded to the urgent, desperate call.
The bird of light soared high, outpacing the Yoo-seong, and Rene closed her eyes and centered her consciousness.
“The village, the village is burning, the kobolds and the people are fighting.”
The bird of light reached the village before the Yoo-seong.
Rene swallowed dryly and continued.
“Flames, smoke, so many kobolds, Robin! Edgar!”
Rene suddenly raised her voice again.
Yoo-seong asked quickly.
“Are there any of the Count’s men here?”
“Yes, the Count’s knights!”
The moment I heard that, I knew what was going on.
Rene had left the Count alone to follow the revelation but to the Count, she’s just a runaway with an excuse so he sent out knights to capture her.
The knights retraced Rene’s steps and arrived in the village.
Two of the Count’s knights were the reason why the town didn’t fall in one fell swoop.
The time for reasoning was short.
Yoo-seong quickened its pace and finally caught a glimpse of the village.
It was a large town, built up to the brim but everywhere was on fire.
Great flames and smoke, shouts, screams, and cries from beyond the relatively unharmed walls.
Yoo-seong sped off the ground and leapt over the fence in a single bound.
It was taller than a man, well over two meters, but to a superhuman knight, he was only a slight obstacle.
“Robin! Edgar!”
René shouted again as soon as he hit the ground.
Yoo-seong could see where she was looking and shouting.
The two of them were standing guard against the kobolds, blocking the entrance to the temple in the town square.
“Robin!”
Rene called the knights’ names again, but she couldn’t reach them.
There was too much noise around them, let alone distance.
Yoo-seong caught his breath.
Expanding his consciousness, he became aware of his surroundings and pounded the ground.
He charged toward the temple entrance.
* * * *
Robin Ilya was eighteen years old and a quasi-knight of the Count of Baltois.
Becoming a quasi-knight at this age was a great accomplishment, and in a few months she would be knighted, so she was quite accomplished for her age.
TLN: Quasi-knights are people who reached the level of knights but didn’t go through the knighthood ceremony.
What’s more, Robin was a girl, and a pretty one at that.
She was a woman, and she was beautiful, so she was a rare commodity in the kingdom.
And that’s what kept her alive.
“Haaak······ haaak······ ha······”
The journey to capture the runaway lady was actually not that hard.
The runaway lady, who was both excited and angry that everyone else was dismissing her revelation as a dream, had told Robin, one of her few friends of the same sex in the castle, about her dreams, which she claimed were a sign from the goddess.
How hard is it to track a runaway when you know where she’s going?
She didn’t think much of it when they arrived in town a day apart.
She thought, “Oh, I’ll just stay here for a day, and maybe the lady will come to town.”
I doubt she’ll come down right away, as she’s quite stubborn and hardy, but she’ll come down before it gets too late at night but there was no lady who came down from the Lotho Forest.
It was a horde of kobolds, seemingly numbering over a hundred at first glance.
To the superhuman knight, the kobolds were nothing more than insignificant creatures to be mowed down, but there were too many of them.
Only a vigilante group of less than twenty men and the town’s lord, Sir Knight-Willy, were left to defend the town, and they were nearly all killed or scattered as they evacuated the townspeople to the temple.
“Haah……haah…….”
It was unknown where Sir Willy was fighting.
The villagers fought and fought and fought, guarding the entrance to the hidden temple.
The hand holding the sword trembled.
My legs shook with weakness, and my vision was blurry, as if my magic had run out but I couldn’t close my eyes.
I could see the damned kobolds coming again.
“Fuck!”
Robin’s hand tightened on her sword.
The idea of abandoning the villagers and running away didn’t occur to her.
Nor did she have any reasonable doubt that she could save them here.
No, she couldn’t do either.
Because Robin was a knight, a true knight who embodied chivalry-that was Robin Ilya!
“Come on, you bastards!”
With her magic depleted, it was impossible for her to activate Chivalry anymore.
But Robin shouted, and right next to her, Edgar, who was two years her senior but had become a quasi-knight, shouted too.
And then it happened.
A white bird entered Robin’s eyes.
A bird made of light.
A bird that descended from a sky of fire and smoke and flew toward her.
It was a magic she knew.
“Lady?”
It was at that moment that she spoke.
“Robin!”
Edgar shouted.
Before she knew it, the kobolds were upon her.
Robin drew her sword but this time, she couldn’t swing.
There was someone a little faster.
A black backside that appeared as quickly as the Lady’s white bird had, filling Robin’s vision!
“Serf troops, rally!”
In the blur of light and brilliant golden glow, a heavenly army descended before Robin’s eyes.
