Chapter 27: Heir to the Light (1)
Two days before the Troll army led by Killakal arrived at Lothian.
After riding horses for four days, Yoo Seong and Rene arrived at the Philo village, where the combat priests of the Omphalos Order had arrived half a day earlier.
“Priest Knight Ruan greets the Black Knight of Lothian.”
The one who walked out of the tent that seemed to have just been set up was Priest Knight Ruan, who was tall and well-built.
Originally, all combat priests were muscular giants, but Ruan was even taller and broader-shouldered, standing a head taller than the other combat priests.
Moreover, with a face as handsome as a nobleman’s, he looked like a moving statue.
Dismounting from his horse, Yoo Seong slightly furrowed his brow at the title ‘Black Knight’ but soon spoke with a smiling face.
“I am Yoo Seong of Lothian.”
“I am Rene Baltois, Yoo Seong’s mage.”
When Rene lifted her skirt slightly in greeting, all the combat priests around Ruan seemed to show signs of embarrassment.
However, being a priest knight, Ruan alone simply responded with a smile before speaking to Yoo Seong again.
“Sir Yoo Seong, please come inside.”
Ruan’s face showed not only welcome but also tension.
This was because they had received information about trolls marching toward Lothian while moving to Philo village.
Nearly forty trolls were marching toward Lothian with five hundred goblins.
Ruan had fought trolls in the borderlands before.
Just imagining those monsters, which were terrifying even when just three or four appeared simultaneously, marching together in numbers exceeding thirty was enough to take his breath away.
How would they stop them?
Could Lothian’s walls withstand these creatures that had neutralized Volano’s walls?
Inside Ruan’s tent a large battlefield map was spread.
As the ten unit leaders of the combat priests gathered, Ruan looked at Yoo Seong, and Yoo Seong took a deep breath before looking at everyone and speaking.
“We will engage in a field battle, not a defensive one.”
“A field battle?”
“Against the trolls?”
To these questions tinged with bewilderment, Yoo Seong nodded and explained the plan in a calm voice, while Ruan and the combat priests looked at the battlefield map and Yoo Seong with still perplexed expressions.
Is that really possible?
Can that really work?
To these questioning and distrustful gazes, Yoo Seong calmly nodded.
“It is possible.”
The unit leaders looked at Ruan with faces asking if they should really believe this, and Ruan looked at Yoo Seong once more.
A young man with exotic features who was young enough to be considered childish but he wasn’t just all talk.
When everyone turned their backs on Baron Volano’s domain, he alone struggled and liberated over hundreds of people.
The savior of Lothian.
The liberator of Volano.
The seemingly impossible plan he presented.
There wasn’t much time to think.
Even at this moment, the troll army was marching toward Lothian while eating the people of Volano.
“I will believe you.”
Ruan said while looking into Yoo Seong’s eyes and Yoo Seong nodded.
After finishing the brief meeting, the group resumed their march.
* * *
The evening before the troll army led by Killakal arrived at Lothian.
All of Lothian’s vassals, including Sir Simon, looked at the battlefield map with heavy expressions after receiving instructions delivered by Rene’s magical bird.
They had known for some time that the troll army was approaching Lothian.
They had been preparing for a defensive battle, but surprisingly, Yoo Seong ordered a field battle outside the castle.
“He must have something in mind.”
“He must have a plan.”
Following Sir Simon, Robin spoke, and Sir Rant and Iserina, who somehow ended up participating in the meeting, also nodded in agreement despite their anxious faces.
Lothian’s forces consisted of three hundred conscripts.
Although it was a scale and fighting force that made it questionable whether they could even face the goblins, let alone the trolls, Sir Simon decided to believe Yoo Seong’s words.
“Make your preparations. Tomorrow will be the decisive battle.”
The meeting concluded with Sir Simon’s heavy voice.
And the next morning, except for Sir Rant who remained to protect the castle, the three knights – Sir Simon, Robin, and Edgar – left the castle with the conscripts.
* * *
The place where Yoo Seong chose to meet the troll army wasn’t far from Lothian.
Therefore, it would not be an exaggeration to say they were essentially fighting with their backs to Lothian’s walls.
The group that joined in the morning had already taken their positions to fight on the wide plain.
Three hundred conscripts were positioned in the center like the main force, with Vanadain leading the archers and regular infantry on the left flank of the main force, and Ruan leading the combat priests on the right.
The Omphalos Order’s combat priests were a type of heavy infantry equipped with large shields.
As priests of Omphalos, the god of iron walls, they were defense specialists possessing various holy magics that could literally create walls, as well as shield defense techniques.
“Look there, it’s the combat priests.”
“Oh Omphalos.”
The conscripts, who had been unsettled about having to fight outside the castle, regained some stability upon seeing the forces positioned on their left and right.
The presence of the Omphalos Order, in particular, was a great comfort to the conscripts.
Time passed.
The wind blowing from the east began to carry a horrible stench mixed with a terrible smell of blood.
The goblins and trolls, who had eaten all three hundred residents of Volano during their five-day march, revealed themselves, sniffing as if excited about new prey.
As the monster army began to appear in the distance, a suppressed silence hung over the conscripts.
Murmurs filled with fear began to leak out.
Sir Simon swallowed dry saliva.
Robin took a deep breath to calm her increasingly rapid breathing at the sight of the trolls advancing while shaking the ground.
Killakal, sitting on Golgo’s shoulder, saw the human army and laughed.
He had marched with some caution for the past six days but the mysterious force that had been hunting trolls and goblins outside Volano never showed itself.
The six-day march had been very peaceful, and new prey was lined up before the troll and goblin army that had devoured all three hundred Volano residents.
Killakal didn’t think any deeper.
While there were some strange points, such as the humans coming out with their backs to the walls and the mysterious force not showing itself, he thought it was meaningless now that they had come this far.
What could they do when his forces charged in and tore them apart?
“Go.”
When Killakal spoke softly, Golgo raised his large wooden club and let out a roar.
The human army faltered at the howl that shook heaven and earth, and not only Killakal but also the goblins and trolls laughed together.
They began charging toward the front following Golgo’s command.
The goblins took the lead with the trolls following behind.
In Volano, the trolls had led the charge to break the walls, but this time it was the opposite.
The excited goblins rushed forward first, and the trolls, who had good explosive power but slow feet, naturally fell behind.
But this too wasn’t very meaningful.
After all, they would all be tangled together the moment they crashed in.
“Kalla-hu!”
“Kalla-hu!”
The goblins charged.
The humans shot arrows, but the numbers were negligible.
There were five hundred goblins.
“For the glory of Camelot!”
“For the glory of Camelot!”
When Robin shouted loudly, the soldiers shouted together.
“Omphalos wall stands with us!”
The combat priests also shouted loudly and blew their horns.
The conscripts shouted with screams as they watched the goblins charging from the front.
The battle lines of goblins and humans collided but the trolls still hadn’t arrived.
Rather, a gap was forming between the charging goblins and trolls but it was a space that would disappear shortly.
It was just a slight time difference created during the charge.
And at that moment, there were those riding horses not from the front but from the flanks.
It was Yoo Seong and Rene.
The two people, each on their horses, rode toward the trolls’ flank.
Killakal, seated on Golgo, noticed Yoo Seong and Rene but didn’t care.
What could they do with just two cavalry?
It would be foolish to stop walking out of concern for those two cavalry.
So he ignored them and looked forward.
“Kalla-hu!”
“Die!”
“Hold on!”
Meanwhile, the initial exchanges took place.
Most of the goblins who had charged ahead met their deaths, pierced by spears and struck by shields but the humans didn’t escape without casualties either.
While the combat priests and regular infantry held firm, the conscripts’ formation began to crack just from the initial collision.
And the distance between Yoo Seong and the trolls narrowed to about ninety meters, a distance that could be crossed instantly on horseback.
Several trolls turned their heads toward Yoo Seong anyway.
And because they did, they could see what even Killakal hadn’t noticed.
“Heavy cavalry! Rally!”
Yoo Seong shouted while riding.
At that moment, cavalry appeared on Yoo Seong’s left and right with a dazzling golden light.
Kate and Diana, riding their warhorses, appeared on the left and right of Yoo Seong and Rene, and then elite heavy cavalry revealed themselves next to them, naturally forming a wedge formation.
They were still few in number compared to the trolls.
But the trolls were startled by the sudden light and appearance, and at the voices of the startled ones, more trolls turned to look toward Yoo Seong.
“For the glory of Camelot!”
As Kate raised her flag and shouted, another brilliant golden light blinded the trolls’ eyes.
“Kraaagh!”
The trolls screamed and writhed in pain.
Some stumbled backward and fell, and because several trolls caught by them fell too, the charging formation became a complete mess.
Killakal finally looked toward Yoo Seong and Yoo Seong looked at such a Killakal.
Raising the spear held instead of a sword, he activated a new power.
An ability newly gained upon becoming a mid-level commander.
The Commander Order, a commander skill added by unit type.
“Run!”
As Yoo Seong shouted, pure white light enveloped the entire elite cavalry unit.
The speed and power of the elite cavalry unit, already enhanced by Kate’s chivalry Glory of Camelot, became even stronger.
It was the effect of ‘Order of the Windstorm’, the cavalry commander’s order.
The cavalry’s charge speed nearly doubled.
The distance between the cavalry and trolls no longer held any meaning and Diana also activated her chivalry.
-Bang!
Diana’s Shock was a chivalry that emitted stronger shockwaves the faster the speed.
When the elite cavalry’s charge attack led by Yoo Seong struck the trolls’ flank, a massive shockwave swept through the trolls from the side.
Whoosh-!
Trolls directly exposed to the shockwave lost parts of their bodies as if caught in an explosion.
Even the second row of trolls, using the first ones hit as buffers, rolled on the ground with their bodies covered in blood.
The elite cavalry trampled over such trolls as they passed.
Among the thirty or so trolls, about ten died instantly, and another ten became incapacitated.
Killakal was bewildered.
The remaining ten or so trolls in the front and rear ranks who weren’t swept up by the shockwave were also paralyzed with shock at the scene that unfolded before their eyes, unable to think.
Yoo Seong, who had advanced several dozens of meters past the trolls, exhaled roughly.
Diana panted heavily, sweating profusely as if she had poured all her strength into that single strike.
It was a one-time attack that couldn’t be repeated twice but the opponent didn’t know that.
When the elite cavalry led by Yoo Seong turned their horses around and raised their spears again, Killakal screamed in terror.
“Attack! Strike those bastards! Don’t give them distance!”
Must prevent them from charging.
Then we must charge from here.
The surviving trolls hesitated, but when Golgo roared and charged, they began to move.
That’s why not a single troll had joined the goblins.
No, rather, the goblins’ formation broke as they turned around or fled, startled by the loud noise from behind.
Sir Simon couldn’t properly see what was happening beyond the goblins in the distance but he instinctively sensed what was occurring.
He swung his sword while releasing the exhilaration rising from the depths of his lungs, and the conscripts were also affected.
Each shouted battle cries as they pushed against the goblins.
Yoo Seong moved again.
Diana’s Shock was difficult to use again in this battle, but the commander order’s effect still remained.
Instead of charging at the trolls, the elite cavalry turned around and started running again.
The trolls kicked the ground with all their might to catch the cavalry, and while their speed was certainly fast, it wasn’t enough to catch up to the cavalry assisted by the commander’s order.
It was a short sprint.
It must have been only about 3 minutes but the trolls were weak in stamina to begin with.
After 3 minutes of full-speed running, they were greatly exhausted, and while chasing the cavalry, they became scattered in all directions.
Killakal sensed intuitively that something had gone wrong but by then it was already too late.
Unlike the scattered trolls, the united elite cavalry began defeating the trolls one by one, led by Rene’s magic.
The goblin formation started crumbling from the right side as if being crushed, perhaps due to something the Battle Priest Order did.
It was Ruan using his chivalry ‘Wall of Faith’.
But Killakal had no time to confirm this.
Golgo let out a terrible cry.
When he turned around in surprise, one cavalry soldier was charging toward him and Golgo.
Black hair and black armor.
The horse too was pitch-black.
The one at the head of the cavalry.
The one who had been riding at the very front.
Killakal instinctively realized.
That’s him.
That’s the one leading the human army.
“Golgo! Kill him!”
As if responding to Killakal’s order, Golgo roared again toward the front.
It was a roar that was almost like an attack but it couldn’t stop Yoo Seong.
The monster’s roar shattered and scattered the moment it reached Yoo Seong.
The reason for this was that Yoo Seong’s eyes turned golden.
Simultaneously, golden flames rose from the tip of Yoo Seong’s sword.
It wasn’t Aura Blade but something beyond that.
The power guided by the true meaning of chivalry that Yoo Seong realized upon becoming a Holy Knight.
Yoo Seong’s chivalry was the Successor of light.
It wasn’t the Army of Light.
Commanding Camelot’s army was only part of the Holy King’s authority, not its entirety.
Holy King’s Cross Swords (聖王十字劍).
The first sword, Sword of Raging Fire (烈火).
The holy flames of the Holy King that destroy humanity’s enemies.
The golden Holy Fire (聖火) swept toward Golgo.
