I am Thor

Chapter 90: Chapter 90: Avengers Assemble

"Agent Romanoff, we need you to report to S.H.I.E.L.D. immediately!" Phil Coulson's urgent voice came over the phone.

In a disheveled living room, Natasha lay sprawled on the sofa, catching her breath after yet another sparring match with Thor. As usual, he had exacted playful "revenge" after she managed to bring him down in the ring.

She lazily grabbed her phone. "Come on, Coulson. I'm in the middle of an assignment. Can it wait?"

"This can't wait. There's been an incident with the Tesseract—Barton's been compromised by an enemy!"

At that, Natasha's relaxed expression vanished. Her voice turned sharp and businesslike. "Tell me what you need me to do."

"It's time to implement the Avengers Initiative."

She cursed under her breath. "Let me guess—I'm supposed to go round up those guys who barely play well with others."

"Something up with S.H.I.E.L.D.?" Thor asked with a smirk, noticing Natasha's change in demeanor as she hung up the phone. "Who are they sending you after? Stark or Hulk?"

"No," Natasha replied with a sly smile. "My assignment is to test your attitude."

"Because of Loki?" Thor's expression became serious.

Natasha arched an eyebrow, unsurprised. "So you already knew?"

Thor nodded. "S.H.I.E.L.D.'s increasing reliance on Tesseract energy was bound to draw attention from some forces in the universe. To them, it's practically an invitation."

"An invitation?" Natasha asked, frowning.

"More like a signal," Thor replied. "A signal that Earth is preparing for war on a cosmic level."

Natasha took this in without probing further, returning to her mission. "So, what's your stance? Are you going to help us?"

Thor sighed. "If I stepped in, it'd only solve the immediate problem. S.H.I.E.L.D. wouldn't learn; it would only embolden them to push further into weapon research. This time, the damage is manageable, but next time? Who knows."

"So you're not going to help?"

"Not unless Nick Fury realizes his mistake," Thor replied. Then he glanced at Jane Foster, who was listening nearby. "But until then, I have another suggestion. Jane has the powers of Thor now. She's more than capable of handling Loki."

Meanwhile, in a remote town, Bruce Banner looked warily at the one-eyed man standing in front of him.

"I'm hiding out here for a reason," Bruce muttered. "Who are you with—the military?"

Nick Fury shook his head. "No, I'm with S.H.I.E.L.D. We've been keeping an eye on people with… unique abilities. We've even kept the military off your back for a while now."

Bruce gave a weary chuckle. "And why would S.H.I.E.L.D. do that? What do you want from me?"

"It's not about what we want," Fury replied. "It's about what the world needs."

Fury's tone shifted as he continued. "An alien threat has taken the Tesseract, and the consequences are unpredictable. The gamma radiation emitted by the Tesseract is faint, and we need an expert in gamma rays—someone who understands them better than anyone."

"So you're not here to hunt a monster?" Bruce asked skeptically.

"No," Fury replied firmly. "S.H.I.E.L.D. doesn't see you as a monster. We see you as… an Avenger."

Outside Stark Industries, Phil Coulson finally took a deep breath, feeling a wave of relief after hours of negotiating with Tony Stark. Convincing the billionaire playboy to join the Avengers was no easy task.

He pulled out his phone to call Fury. "Boss, Tony Stark is in. Did you get Bruce Banner, too? That just leaves Captain America. Should I let him know?"

"No need," Fury replied. "Thor's already handling it."

Ten minutes earlier, Captain America was boxing in a gym when his phone rang. It was Thor.

"Steve," Thor said, "the world needs you again. Are you ready?"

Steve paused only briefly before answering, "I'm always ready."
