I Am The Flash

Chapter 56: Dr. Light

The evening air shimmered unnaturally, the hum of Central City's life interrupted by the sharp crackle of an energy surge. A swirling blue portal tore into existence in an alleyway, its edges sparking with erratic streaks of lightning that danced in every direction. From within the maelstrom emerged two figures.

The first was a towering man clad in a sleek, pitch-black suit. His presence was menacing, his every movement exuding raw, calculated power. The red lightning bolts etched across his costume seemed to pulse like living veins, casting an eerie glow against the walls of the alley. His mask covered his face completely, save for the jagged, gaping mouthpiece that revealed rows of sharp, uneven teeth. His cold, hollow eyes were twin abysses, devoid of humanity, glowing faintly with a malevolent blue hue. This was Zoom.

Zoom's posture was rigid yet predatory, his movements unnaturally fluid, almost serpentine. He stepped out of the portal with deliberate slowness, his head turning sharply as if scanning the area for potential threats. Behind him followed a woman whose presence was equally striking, though her demeanor betrayed a hint of unease.

Dr. Light stepped cautiously onto the pavement, her sleek silver-and-black suit gleaming under the faint glow of a nearby streetlamp. Her helmet, smooth and reflective, concealed most of her face, save for the mouthpiece that revealed her tightly set lips. The faint hum of her light-based weaponry was audible as she adjusted the gauntlets on her hands, her fingers twitching with a mix of anticipation and tension.

Zoom turned to her abruptly, his movement a blur, and she flinched just slightly before regaining her composure. The faint quiver in her stance was subtle, but Zoom noticed. His head tilted to the side, his jagged mouthpiece parting into what could only be described as a mockery of a grin.

"You're nervous," he rasped, his voice distorted and crackling like static, each word laced with a sinister undercurrent. He stepped closer, looming over her, his presence oppressive. "Good. Fear sharpens resolve, clears away hesitation. You'll need it."

Dr. Light's lips tightened further, her jaw clenching as she met his hollow gaze. She straightened her posture, forcing confidence into her voice. "I'm not nervous," she snapped, though the slight waver betrayed her. "I'm ready."

Zoom chuckled darkly, the sound low and guttural, vibrating through the air like the rumble of distant thunder. He began to circle her, his steps slow, deliberate. The faint crackle of his lightning punctuated the silence.

"Ready," he repeated mockingly, his voice dripping with disdain. "Do you think this will be like your other assignments? The Flash is no ordinary target. He's fast, stronger than you realize. But... he's also predictable." He stopped directly in front of her, his sharp teeth gleaming as he leaned in, his voice dropping to a whisper that sent a chill down her spine. "And weak where it matters most."

Dr. Light stiffened, her hands curling into fists at her sides. "Then why not do it yourself?" she challenged, her tone sharp, though her voice trembled slightly. "Why send me?"

Zoom's grin widened, his hollow eyes narrowing. "Because this isn't just about killing him. It's about breaking him." He raised a gloved hand, a faint blue glow sparking at his fingertips as he gestured vaguely to the world around them. "His city, his friends, his love—they're his greatest strength and his deepest weakness. You'll exploit that. When you end him, I want him to die knowing he failed everyone."

Dr. Light swallowed hard, the weight of the task settling over her. Her fingers twitched again, the glow of her gauntlets pulsing faintly as if responding to her unease. She nodded once, curtly, her voice low. "What do you want me to do?"

Zoom straightened, his imposing figure towering over her as he clasped his hands behind his back, his movements unnervingly precise. "Draw him out," he instructed, his tone sharp and commanding. "Create chaos. Make him chase you. And when he does—" He leaned in once more, his jagged teeth bared. "Blind him. Leave him vulnerable. Then finish him."

Dr. Light hesitated for the briefest moment, her gaze flickering downward before meeting his again. The faintest trace of doubt crossed her face, but she quickly masked it with a steely determination. "Consider it done," she said, her voice firm despite the lingering edge of fear.

Zoom stared at her for a long moment, the glow in his hollow eyes intensifying. Then, without warning, he reached out, gripping her chin firmly but not forcefully enough to hurt. His touch was cold, like the void itself, and it sent a shiver down her spine.

"Don't disappoint me," he whispered, his tone low and chilling. "Failure isn't an option."

With that, he released her, turning abruptly and disappearing into the swirling blue portal in a blur of red lightning. Dr. Light stood alone in the alley, her breath quick and shallow as the portal closed behind him, leaving the air heavy with an unnatural stillness.

She exhaled slowly, her hands flexing at her sides as she steadied herself. The doubt lingered, but she pushed it aside. This was her mission now. And she wasn't going to fail.

Not for Zoom. Not for anyone.
