Chapter 58: Seeing the Light of Day...
The night had already cast its veil over the landscape, a heavy darkness settling over everything in sight. A cliff towered over a yawning abyss, its face dotted with scraggly shrubs whose shadows swayed with the faint breeze. Two figures moved silently toward the gaping maw of a cave.
As their feet crossed the threshold, pale lights flickered to life on the walls. Their unsteady glow cast strange halos, making shadows ripple across the stone. Ryosuke lingered a step behind, his gaze sweeping over the space as he squinted into every dark corner.
"This place…" he muttered, breaking the silence, "is the definition of creepy. Perfectly isolated. Makes sense, though—explains a lot about why you're always so off-kilter, Mechamaru."
The quip, though casual, echoed sharply through the cave.
A gravelly voice replied, tinged with sarcasm, reverberating against the walls. "I'll take that as a compliment."
Ryosuke arched an eyebrow, faintly amused.
Ahead, the narrow corridor gradually opened into a vast chamber, its expanse shrouded in semi-darkness. At the far end, a peculiar structure loomed. A massive tub, crisscrossed by snaking steel pipes, stood at the center like a relic from a nightmare.
Suspended in its opaque liquid was a figure barely human. Drenched bandages clung to its body, leaving only glimpses of exposed skin—eyes and a mouth.
Mechamaru froze in place, but Ryosuke kept walking, completely unfazed, until he was mere inches from the tub. He stared at the submerged figure for a long moment before a warm smile broke across his face.
"Pleasure to finally meet you, Kokichi."
A raspy voice emanated from the figure, barely audible over the steady dripping of pipes. "So, you even know my name. Makes me seriously question who—or what—you are."
Ryosuke's smile didn't waver. Folding his arms, he tilted his head slightly. "You could question it, but honestly… knowing the answer wouldn't do you any good right now."
Kokichi's eyes narrowed, as if trying to peer into Ryosuke's very soul. "So, Ryosuke… you came here to see me. Well, here I am."
Ryosuke nodded, his grin steady. "Indeed. I must admit, your innate vow is... limiting."
"Limiting?" Kokichi growled, his voice growing sharper. "I'd call it a damn nightmare. Now that you've seen me, tell me—do you honestly think you can help me?"
Ryosuke chuckled, a short, mocking laugh that carried in the still air. "Of course." Then, in a split second, his playful demeanor turned serious. "But… there's a condition."
An uneasy silence fell over the chamber, broken only by the occasional drip of liquid from the pipes. Kokichi exhaled, his irritation palpable. "What condition?"
Ryosuke shrugged nonchalantly, his smirk returning. "Simple: you and I set some boundaries. You handle Kasumi, and I'll deal with Mai. Sound fair?"
Kokichi's expression froze in sheer disbelief at the audacity of the proposition. For a moment, he struggled to find words before releasing a strained chuckle. "This has to be a joke."
Ryosuke leaned forward, resting his arms on the edge of the tub. His grin never faltered. "Not at all. It's in everyone's best interest. If we step on each other's toes, things are going to get… messy. Let's make this clear now. So, what do you say—do we have a deal?"
Kokichi tilted his head, looking utterly unimpressed. After a moment of thought, he finally muttered, "Honestly, you can take care of both of them if that entertains you."
Ryosuke squinted slightly, studying him. "Really?" He leaned back a little, as if pondering, then with a mock-innocent tone added, "Picture it: me and Kasumi. Her hand in mine, our faces so close, ready to—"
"STOP THAT!" Kokichi's voice boomed, echoing off the chamber walls. "I don't care, you hear me?! Whatever you do with Kasumi is none of my business! Are you going to help me or not?!"
Ryosuke burst out laughing, shaking his head. "Relax, would you?" He shot Kokichi a sly look, letting a beat pass before softly concluding, "Yes, Kokichi. I'll help you. I hope you're ready to say goodbye to those bandages."
The cave fell silent, save for the faint drip of the pipes. Kokichi's bandaged form sat motionless, but Ryosuke's mind raced with calculated precision.
Time seemed to slow as his gaze focused. Bit by bit, a faint glow emanated from Kokichi, like a delicate veil unraveling. Beneath the surface, Ryosuke could see it—the three distinct layers of light.
The second layer reacted immediately, glowing with a golden brilliance.
The world shifted.
Ryosuke found himself suspended in an otherworldly realm where threads of energy coiled and danced like living streams of light. At the center hovered a luminous orb, pulsing faintly as if it were alive.
Without hesitation, Ryosuke reached out. The orb floated toward him, settling softly in his palm. He studied it for a moment, then murmured to himself:
Destroying this would be wasteful. It could be… useful.
At his words, the orb vibrated before shrinking and vanishing into his skin.
The cave returned in an instant—the pipes, the dim light, and Kokichi, still swathed in wet bandages. Ryosuke exhaled, a serene breath breaking the tension as he stood upright, a satisfied smirk stretching across his face.
"Done," he declared simply.
Kokichi's brows furrowed, his eyes still closed. When they flickered open, he looked disoriented at first. Then, like a tide washing over him, newfound clarity coursed through his being. He flexed his fingers tentatively, feeling the air brush against bare skin.
His breathing quickened.
In one swift motion, Kokichi sat upright. He faltered briefly but found his footing, his legs steady under him for the first time in what felt like an eternity.
Silence fell once more as he gazed down at his body in stunned disbelief, then lifted his eyes to Ryosuke.
"This… is incredible. I can…"
Ryosuke's smug grin deepened as he stuffed his hands in his pockets. "Yeah, yeah, I know. I'm a genius. But the real question is… are you ready to feel sunlight on your skin?"
Kokichi froze for a heartbeat, then his expression steeled with determination.
"Yes."
