Chapter 9 - Gloomy
Shangguan Rouyue sat cross-legged in her room, trying to cultivate, but her mind was restless, preventing her from entering a meditative state. Her spiritual energy flowed sluggishly, like a cart trudging through a muddy path.
Given her years of cultivation and her profound mental discipline, such a situation was rare. Since forming her Core, she had always been able to settle into meditation with ease, her energy flowing smoothly as if guided by divine hands. But now, her unsettled mood was hindering her.
It was all Qin Nan’s fault.
Just this morning, he had professed his feelings, insisting she should be his wife. Yet, not even half a day had passed, and he was already getting cozy with another girl. His sweet words felt like nothing more than empty promises, leaving her simmering with frustration.
If Qin Nan were truly a shameless flirt, she would have accepted it as fact and brushed it off. But deep down, she didn’t believe that was who he was. Besides, she had begun to harbor a faint, inexplicable hope about becoming his wife.
So when Qin Nan interact so intimately with another girl. His easy familiarity with Yang Xiaoqi, their open displays of affection—Shangguan Rouyue felt incredibly uneasy.
To put it simply, she was jealous.
To be jealous over a young boy, to compete with a girl for his affection—if this were to get out, where would she hide her face?
So, Shangguan Rouyue didn’t want to believe it, but her emotions couldn’t lie to her.
She had spent many years cultivating, already famous in the cultivation world, always presenting a cold and aloof image. Though she never lacked admirers, she had always kept them at arm’s length.
The absurdity of it all made her feel both embarrassed and indignant.
Shangguan Rouyue would never admit it. After so many years of cultivation, where had all her efforts gone?
Now, she just wanted peace, to focus on her cultivation and healing, to clear her mind of unnecessary thoughts and see the situation for what it truly was.
How could she possibly be infatuated with a boy, especially one who would sneak into her bed in the middle of the night and act like a rascal?
And yet, she couldn’t forget the way Yang Xiaoqi had flaunted her closeness to Qin Nan or the antagonistic glance she had cast in her direction before leaving.( What Shangeguan Rouyue thought)
The memory lingered, stoking her annoyance.
Even though she knew that someone like Yang Xiaoqi could never be compared to her, Shangguan Rouyue was still caught in her own confusion. She couldn’t see the situation clearly and, instead, began to doubt Qin Nan’s true feelings and intentions.
A knock at the door interrupted her thoughts.
“I’m heading to the mountain to gather herbs,” Qin Nan called from outside.
“Alright,” Shangguan Rouyue replied.
It seemed Qin Nan had no intention of inviting her along this time.
Ever since that day she had gone looking for him in the mountains, worried for his safety, she had made it a point to accompany him on his herb-gathering trips. Even though she had already killed a tiger in the area yesterday, she knew the mountains were still full of dangers.
Shangguan Rouyue still felt a bit frustrated. Since Qin Nan didn’t suggest that she accompany him, she had no reason to insist.
The sound of footsteps gradually faded as Qin Nan left. Once the sound of his departure was completely gone, she tried to calm herself and return to her meditation.
She closed her eyes, and the spiritual energy in the air began to gather around her, shimmering faintly. With each breath, the energy flowed into her body, entering her dantian and transforming into true qi. The qi coursed through her meridians, slowly healing her internal injuries like spring rain reviving withered roots.
Her injuries had been severe—there was a time when she thought she might not survive. Death itself didn’t frighten her, but the idea of dying alone in the wilderness, her body left to the mercy of wild beasts, was unbearable for someone as proud as she was.
Fortunately, her life was not destined to end, as she encountered Qin Nan, who saved her life.
Although the medicine Qin Nan brewed was extremely bitter, in the mortal realm, it was considered a top-tier healing potion. Without this medicine, for her to regain the mobility she had now would have taken at least half a year.
Perhaps she would never fully recover, and would be left with permanent disabilities.
Even if she didn’t suffer from permanent disability, the scars from her injuries would definitely remain.
Now, her body was nearly free of scars, her skin smooth and flawless once more. She had noticed this during her bath yesterday and felt a rare moment of joy.
Although the scars on her body would be hidden under her clothes and unseen by others, as a woman, she couldn’t help but feel troubled by them.
In fact, her quick recovery was not only due to the medicine and ointment Qin Nan prepared but also because of her own exceptional physique and strong healing ability.
While the medicine worked wonders, she didn’t want to taste it any longer; it was just too bitter.
Now that her injuries had largely healed, she could resume cultivation. As long as she spent time practicing healing techniques regularly, she would recover completely in no time.
There was no longer any need to continue taking the medicine.
Two hours passed.
Shangguan Rouyue remained seated, but her thoughts were still unsettled. A slight frown creased her flawless forehead, as she seemed lost in thought.
She couldn’t settle her mind, and it was affecting her.
Ever since that day when Qin Nan had taken advantage and kissed her, her mental state had started to show signs of disruption.
However, due to her strong mental fortitude, like a solid rock, the initial effects were not significant.
But after hearing Qin Nan’s words this morning, her composure was completely shattered.
Letting out a soft sigh, Shangguan Rouyue opened her eyes. Her long lashes trembled as she looked toward the worn walls of the room, her gaze distant.
After a moment, she stood up, abandoning her meditation.
“If I can’t resolve this, I might as well follow my heart,” she murmured.
“That troublesome boy…” she added with a faint huff.
Her figure seemed weightless as she floated out of the room, rising into the air and heading toward the mountains at an ever-increasing speed.
Upon reaching the mountain, Shangguan Rouyue released her vast spiritual sense, searching for Qin Nan.
She realized her inability to meditate was not just due to jealousy. She was genuinely worried about his safety. The thought of him alone in the mountains, surrounded by wild beasts, made her heart clench.
His safety.
She couldn’t pinpoint when it started, but Qin Nan’s safety began to affect her mental state, and it was becoming so intense that it prevented her from entering a meditative state.
This was definitely not a good sign for a cultivator, as it could severely disrupt their training.
Countless geniuses, who could have stood above all others, often found themselves delayed in their cultivation journey due to various distractions.
Romantic entanglements, especially love, were among the most detrimental distractions for cultivators.
Up until now, her rapid cultivation progress was due to her lack of attachments and her transcendent state of mind.
But now things were different. Yet, instead of worrying about her own mental state, she was more concerned about Qin Nan’s safety.
She even thought that when Qin Nan had knocked on her door saying he was going up the mountain to gather herbs, she shouldn’t have been stubborn and refused to follow him.
Even if she couldn’t stay close by his side, she should have quietly trailed him from a distance, ensuring his safety.
The more she thought about it, the more convinced she became that Qin Nan might have encountered some danger, that something bad had happened.
A young man with no strength to harm even a chicken, alone on the mountain with so many wild beasts lurking around—how could that not be dangerous?
Growing increasingly anxious, Shangguan Rouyue threw caution to the wind. She flung open the gates of her Lingtai(Mental) and unleashed her divine sense with all her might.
The howling winds roared, stirring the atmosphere and clouds, while her divine sense surged forth like a tidal wave, sweeping over the mountains ahead of her.
