Chapter 6 - New clothes
This outfit is new, completely different from the old clothes borrowed from the neighbor.
Although it can’t be called beautiful, it still pales compared to the garments Shangguan Rouyue used to wear before she came to Niu Jiao Village.
However, being new and a complete set—with outerwear, innerwear, and a belt in various colors—it exudes a layered and pleasing aesthetic.
It was a set of clothes Qin Nan had specifically asked the neighborly aunt to sew three days ago.
He had noticed that Shangguan Rouyue repeatedly wore the same few old, ill-fitting clothes, which seemed to diminish her beauty.
Inspired by the thought, he decided to make a new outfit for her.
In fact, Shangguan Rouyue had long noticed Qin Nan collecting fabric but hadn’t realized it was to prepare clothes for her.
“Try it on and see if it fits,” Qin Nan said.
“Thank you,” Shangguan Rouyue nodded happily, accepting the outfit.
Though the clothes in her hands were quite ordinary and couldn’t compare to what she had worn in the past, she still felt delighted.
Qin Nan stepped out of the room to wait, only re-entering when Shangguan Rouyue said she had finished changing.
When he saw her anew, Qin Nan was stunned. The effort of saving fabric and asking the neighbor to sew the clothes had been well worth it.
This set was Qin Nan’s own design. He had imagined how Shangguan Rouyue might look in it, but reality surpassed his imagination.
Simple yet elegant, her long black hair cascaded like silk, the red sleeves and skirt complementing her lithe figure.
Most striking was her expression—a subtle blend of charm and composure, her sparkling eyes radiant with life.
She looked stunning.
The only flaw might have been her shoes. Though hidden by the hem of her dress, they peeked out as she moved.
Admittedly, such flowing garments were unsuitable for villagers who toiled in the fields or wandered the mountains.
Yet Shangguan Rouyue was no ordinary villager. With her skills, even trekking through the wilds in these clothes would pose no problem.
Qin Nan didn’t just stand and stare. He quickly brought out a pair of new shoes, also made by the neighborly aunt, resolving to thank her again later.
He had Shangguan Rouyue sit by the bed, then personally helped her put them on.
Finally, the ensemble was perfect.
Shangguan Rouyue looked at Qin Nan with a subtle pout, her beautiful eyes narrowing at him.
Qin Nan appeared puzzled.
What a schemer—while putting on her shoes, he had deliberately pinched her toes.
This was no misunderstanding; Qin Nan’s actions had been unmistakable.
“Why did you pinch my toes?” Shangguan Rouyue asked, displeased.
“Because your toes are beautiful,” Qin Nan replied straightforwardly.
Shangguan Rouyue had expected him to blush and stammer out an excuse, being just a young man with limited experience.
But instead, he answered so boldly that it left her momentarily stunned.
It reminded her that since meeting Qin Nan, despite his youthful appearance, his actions often reflected a maturity far beyond his years.
Her gaze turned wistful; though she had been taken advantage of, she found herself unable to retaliate. This was a first for her.
Of course, if she wanted, she could easily overpower Qin Nan.
But remembering his gesture of gifting her new clothes and shoes, she decided to let it slide this time.
Though Shangguan Rouyue forgave him, Qin Nan seemed to have other ideas.
He realized he was starting to like her.
Previously, when Qin Nan had asked twice about her plans to leave Niu Jiao Village, he felt reluctant even as he asked.
Perhaps he had grown used to her presence and the life they shared under the same roof.
Yet, he dared not think further. He knew someone like Shangguan Rouyue would never settle for a small mountain village like this.
Unexpectedly, Shangguan Rouyue had no plans to leave and even thought Qin Nan wanted her gone, which made her tone rather sharp.
In truth, Qin Nan didn’t want her to leave. He wanted her to stay.
At first, saving Shangguan Rouyue had been a calculated move to connect with the cultivation world and access its resources.
But now, his thoughts had shifted.
“Do you like it? I had the aunt sew this new outfit for you.” Qin Nan asked.
“I like it,” Shangguan Rouyue nodded.
“By the way, how did the aunt know my measurements? The outfit fits perfectly,” she asked, puzzled.
“It wasn’t the aunt—it was me,” Qin Nan said.
“How do you know my measurements?” Shangguan Rouyue’s guard went up.
“I’ve seen all your injuries, haven’t I? How could I not know?” Qin Nan replied.
Shangguan Rouyue’s face turned red as she realized what he meant. She glared at him, feeling both annoyed and embarrassed.
Inwardly, she scoffed, Mischievous—filthy scoundrel.
The scoundrel must have taken note of her measurements when he treated her injuries after she was seriously hurt.
“Since I gave Miss Shangguan new clothes, don’t you think you should thank me?” Qin Nan asked.
“What do you want?” she inquired.
“I want to sleep with Miss Shangguan tonight,” Qin Nan said.
“You’re outrageous!” Shangguan Rouyue exclaimed, her brows furrowing.
“Is it that outrageous? This bed is mine. You’ve taken it over, forcing me to sleep in the cramped and cold medicine room every night without space to stretch,” Qin Nan said innocently.
“…” Shangguan Rouyue paused, realizing he had a point, and was momentarily speechless.
“I just want to sleep on a proper bed. I promise I won’t do anything inappropriate,” Qin Nan said.
Though his tone was earnest, Shangguan Rouyue still refused, as it concerned her reputation.
Even though she didn’t dislike Qin Nan and thought of him as a mere child incapable of mischief, she couldn’t agree.
Qin Nan didn’t insist, understanding the importance of reputation, especially for a woman of Shangguan Rouyue’s standing in the cultivation world.
Though he let it go for now, Qin Nan wasn’t giving up.
After dinner, as the night deepened, Qin Nan retired to the medicine room.
However, instead of sleeping, he meditated in secret, quietly cultivating.
In fact, during this time, Qin Nan had been secretly cultivating, without letting Shangguan Rouyue notice.
…
When the village grew silent, Qin Nan crept out of the medicine room, tiptoed to her door, gently pushed it open, and slipped inside.
In the darkness, the room was pitch black, but for Qin Nan, who knew the place like the back of his hand, it posed no difficulty.
He moved carefully, climbed onto the bed, and slipped under the covers.
