HunterxHunter: I Became Stronger After Death

Chapter 89: The Shadow Beasts

The publicity surrounding the Scarlet Eyes had only been going on for about four or five days.

Moro figured that Kurapika must have rushed to Yorknew City in a hurry, most likely without even being able to afford the 12 million jenny entrance ticket to the auction.

By giving him the ticket, at least Kurapika wouldn't have made this trip for nothing.

As for the Scarlet Eyes themselves…

He shouldn't even think about it.

Moro wasn't about to give them away for free.

Even if, by some miracle of generosity, he handed the Scarlet Eyes to Kurapika, the current Kurapika had no ability to protect them.

In fact, it was far more likely that those greedy scavengers would complete a "buy one, get one free" deal—by taking both the Scarlet Eyes and Kurapika's life.

Moro's Calculations

As Moro stepped out of the alley, he passed a garbage bin and casually tossed in the shredded Kurta overcoat.

"Tomorrow is the final day of the auction," he thought.

"But the 'Menu Organization' already knows my movements. There's a high chance they'll launch another attack—or even hire stronger assassins."

Blending into the bustling crowd, Moro's eyes flickered with thought.

He pulled out his phone and sent a request to Argo, asking him to investigate Nolan's location.

Of course, it was unlikely to succeed.

Sure enough—

A moment later, Argo responded with a flat-out rejection.

Moro wasn't surprised.

Argo had already made it clear—he was willing to dig deep into the Phantom Troupe, but not the mafia.

And Nolan wasn't just any mafia figure—he was both a Ten Dons' son and the founder of the Menu Organization.

Moro put away his phone.

As expected.

But intelligence sources weren't limited to just Argo.

If anything, the most convenient option was the Hunter Association's official website.

The Hunter Website

"As long as you have money, you can buy any information you want."

That was the general consensus among professional Hunters.

However—

Some highly classified intelligence wasn't available for sale, no matter how much money one had.

And most importantly, access to the site required a Hunter License.

Moro didn't have one.

Nor was he going to wait until December to take the Hunter Exam.

But—

He did have two Hunter acquaintances.

Standing amid the sea of people, Moro hesitated for a moment before making a decision.

He pulled out his phone again and sent messages to Kanzai and Sambica.

The world of professional Hunters functioned on an exchange of favors—

"You help me, I help you."

Moro put his phone away and returned to his hotel near the Yorknew auction house.

Encountering the Mafia

As soon as Moro stepped into the lavish hotel lobby, he was met with a noisy, chaotic atmosphere.

A large group of mafia enforcers, all dressed in black suits, were lounging around—chatting, smoking, and filling the air with choking clouds of secondhand smoke.

Since the Ten Dons controlled the Yorknew Auction, it was no surprise that mafia members flocked to the area.

Moro had already grown accustomed to their presence.

Ignoring the rowdy gangsters, he walked straight toward the elevator.

Just as he approached—

Ding!

The elevator doors slid open.

A group of black-suited bodyguards stepped out, surrounding a distinguished-looking elderly man.

Walking beside him was a tall, sharp-eared man with a pointed beard—his features eerily similar to the classic vampires seen in TV shows.

Moro's eyes flickered toward the old man.

"Bartre, the Billionaire."

Moro instantly recognized him.

Having worked in the antique business for a year, he immediately identified the elderly man's identity.

This was Bartre, a multi-billionaire.

His prime target at this year's auction was a set of Greed Island game cartridges.

Naturally, a man of his wealth and obsession wouldn't miss the event.

Moro shifted his gaze to the sharp-eared man beside Bartre.

"Judging by his presence and those ears… he must be the Hunter, Zebro Zezgera."

Moro paid little mind to them and continued walking.

As he passed by, stepping into the elevator, he noticed—

Zebro Zezgera suddenly turned back and stared at him.

Moro's expression remained neutral.

A brief silent exchange of gazes.

Then—Zebro Zezgera simply looked away.

Ding!

The elevator doors closed.

Bartre's Suspicion

Walking through the hotel corridor, Bartre turned to Zezgera.

"Something wrong?"

Zezgera responded calmly, without looking back—

"Nothing. That kid from earlier was a Nen user, so I just took a closer look."

Bartre nodded, uninterested.

After all, ever since he had offered a 50-billion jenny reward for clearing Greed Island, he had personally met at least a thousand Nen users.

One more was nothing special.

Moro's Thoughts

Inside the elevator, Moro leaned against the wall, deep in thought.

He recalled Bartre's backstory—

A billionaire who spent billions of jenny in a desperate attempt to save his comatose lover.

Not only did he buy multiple copies of Greed Island, but he also offered a staggering 50-billion reward to recruit Nen users for the game.

This effort attracted nearly 200 Hunters.

Moro wondered—

Had Bartre ever considered using that 500 billion to find a Nen healer instead?

Or had he already tried, only to fail?

If only the Zoldycks were interested in money…

Nanika could've solved his problem with a snap of her fingers.

Yet—

One side was willing to spend any amount but couldn't find a cure.

The other side had a perfect cure but would never care about the money.

The world is full of strange contradictions.

Moro couldn't help but sigh.

Shadow Beasts' Arrival

Elsewhere, on a high-rise rooftop, a lean man with narrow eyes and slanted bangs held up a telescope.

His codename—"Mosquito."

He was a member of the Shadow Beasts—the Ten Dons' elite enforcer squad.

"Found him."

Mosquito spotted Moro's hotel and narrowed his eyes in thought.

Just then—

Soft footsteps sounded behind him.

A hairless, worm-like man, wearing only underwear, slithered forward.

His codename—"Worm."

Another Shadow Beast.

"Do we wait until the auction ends before making a move?" Worm asked.

Mosquito tapped his thin fingers against his cheek.

"Depends. The auction is the top priority—we can't afford to alert the guests. Besides, wouldn't fighting in the city be a problem for you?"

Worm turned his head, eyes cold.

"Are you underestimating me?"

Mosquito let out a chuckle.

"You're as sensitive as ever."

Then his expression hardened.

"But listen—once we make a move, we can't let the target escape. No matter what."

Worm fell silent.

The hunt had begun.
