Chapter 70: "It Wasn't All for Nothing"
Nearly thirty armed personnel...
The moment they saw Moro and Hisoka, they raised their assault rifles and pulled the triggers without hesitation.
As the cacophony of gunfire erupted, countless bullets rained toward Moro and Hisoka.
Moro, holding a handgun in one hand, immediately retreated behind Hisoka.
Hisoka noticed Moro's move through the corner of his eye, and though silent, he was already prepared. Channeling his aura, he used Bungee Gum.
With a sudden motion, Hisoka spread his arms wide, pulling out a large, transparent, pink elastic sheet. Fixing one end to the ground with his feet, he created a barrier in front of him to intercept the bullets.
The swarm of bullets struck the pink elastic surface.
In an instant, their kinetic energy and heat were absorbed. They merely left sharp indentations in the elastic before coming to a complete halt.
By the time the armed personnel emptied their magazines, the elastic shield was densely covered with bullets, forming an impenetrable wall in front of Hisoka.
Seeing the wall of bullets hanging in front of Hisoka, the armed men were stunned. Even the instinctive act of reloading their weapons came to a halt.
With a casual movement, Hisoka clapped his hands together, compressing the pink elastic sheet and crushing the bullets into a compact ball.
"This is magic~," Hisoka quipped.
Under the dumbfounded gazes of the armed men, Hisoka opened his hands slowly. The once-crushed bullets were now neatly arranged on the elastic sheet, perfectly aligned. It was a sight that would delight any perfectionist.
Moro observed Hisoka's theatrics.
What Moro saw, however, wasn't the dazzling performance of magic but rather Hisoka's complete mastery over his Nen ability.
This was precisely one of the things Moro lacked most at the moment.
As Moro considered this, his eyes focused briefly on Hisoka's seemingly unguarded back.
For an instant, a flicker of murderous intent crossed Moro's mind.
But under the weight of reason, the intent was suppressed almost as quickly as it arose.
Moro pressed his lips together and shifted his focus. Using Hisoka as a shield, he aimed his gun under Hisoka's outstretched arm.
Taking advantage of the armed men's hesitation, Moro pulled the trigger without mercy.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
With each burst of gunfire, bullets flew out, striking the heads and chests of the armed personnel with pinpoint accuracy.
In just a few seconds, six or seven of them had fallen.
As Moro emptied his magazine, he casually discarded the handgun, pulling another from his tactical belt and resuming fire.
Faced with Moro's relentless assault, the armed personnel snapped out of their stupor, scrambling for cover while reloading their weapons.
Some even reached for grenades.
But Hisoka wasn't about to give them a chance to retaliate.
After his "magic trick," Hisoka casually flicked the pink elastic sheet. Using the elastic rebound of Bungee Gum, he sent the bullets hurtling back at the armed men.
Thud! Thud! Thud!
A series of dull impacts echoed as the remaining men fell like dominos, unable to withstand the counterattack.
No matter how well-armed they were, ordinary combatants stood no chance against Nen users.
"It seems this mansion holds some rather intriguing secrets…"
Hisoka's gaze shifted from the scattered corpses to Moro's face, a curious smile forming as he asked, "What kind of fun secret would make you come all the way here?"
"You're overthinking it. That place is just a virus research facility. Nothing more. I came here solely to destroy it."
Moro's tone was flat.
Hisoka studied Moro's expression closely, noting the subtle nuances in his demeanor. Realizing Moro wasn't lying, Hisoka lost interest.
At first, Hisoka had thought Moro's actions hinted at a more compelling motive, possibly hiding a secret worth uncovering.
But it turned out Moro's objective was simply to destroy a virus research site.
"I see."
Hisoka spread his hands nonchalantly, then suddenly remarked, "By the way… you just tried to kill me, didn't you?"
"Did I?"
Moro's response was calm as he ejected an empty magazine.
Hisoka narrowed his eyes, his grin widening slightly. "Alright then. I guess not~."
"Exactly. I didn't."
As Moro spoke, he reloaded his gun and walked toward the pile of corpses at the mansion's entrance.
After taking a few steps, Moro paused, glancing back toward the wall they had climbed over earlier.
Hisoka also turned his attention in the same direction.
A familiar figure stood atop the wall, staring down at them.
"You…!"
The newcomer was none other than Sambika, who had hurried over upon hearing the gunfire.
Standing on the wall, Sambika's dark eyes reflected astonishment as she looked at Moro and Hisoka.
Then her gaze shifted to the courtyard filled with heavily armed corpses. For a moment, she froze.
In her understanding, a well-equipped team like this had no reason to be in a remote, nearly forgotten village.
The stark contrast gave her a profound sense of unease, which quickly turned into confusion.
Meanwhile, in the underground passage leading to the surface…
The man in the black suit, known as Retona, stood coldly. Slowly removing his tie and jacket, he revealed a tactical harness beneath his clothes.
From one of its compartments, he pulled out a Desert Eagle.
Retona spoke to himself:
"I used to believe guns were the best weapons. A simple pull of the trigger could end a life with ease."
He raised the Desert Eagle to his temple, continuing his monologue:
"I also believed that having a gun in hand was the key to obtaining wealth and status. And I succeeded… but I was wrong. There's a weapon far stronger than guns."
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The passage filled with muzzle flashes as Retona emptied his magazine into his own temple.
But none of the bullets penetrated his skin.
Each one was stopped by the aura surrounding him, dropping to the ground with metallic clinks.
"I'm grateful to have learned Nen, even more so to be a Enhancement-Type user. It lets me transcend everything I once thought was true."
Retona's expression remained impassive as he ascended the stone steps toward the surface, his aura growing stronger with every step.
This ability, "Above All Else," enhanced his strength by reinforcing his beliefs and unwavering mindset, allowing him to maintain peak combat readiness.
Emerging into the courtyard, Retona surveyed the scene with cold eyes.
Moro spotted Retona immediately. His interest piqued, he thought, At least this trip wasn't a waste.
Raising his gun, Moro fired a few shots at Retona without hesitation.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
However, each bullet was effortlessly stopped by Retona's aura.
"Hmm?"
Moro noticed something peculiar. After being hit, Retona's aura seemed to grow even stronger.
His level… around Lv. 35…
