Hunter X Hunter - Reviewers Rage

Chapter 31: Zevil x Island: Tag x Or Be x Tagged

Seventy-two hours had passed, and the once tense applicants now felt a refreshing breeze under a bright, blazing sun.

Each had come with different backgrounds and motivations, but they all shared the same goal—to become a Hunter. The next stage of the Hunter Exam was upon them.

"Ladies and gentlemen, congratulations on escaping the Trick Tower. Good to see no one injured" the examiner announced, though his gaze lingered disapprovingly on Fang.

'Injured? A man passed a few seconds before Fang started destroying walls using his Ko, that man died once he stumbled through the door'

@Compared to the original where Tonpa was the last and 24th to pass, now 30 passed. You and Togiri plus a few you saved after the first Hunter Exam in the Numere Wetlands. Minus the one guy that died now and in the story@

'We saved and made an additional 4 participants reach this Phase. I hope this doesn't change the last test. If it does, that changes my plans for this test.' Togiri looked with his typical face void of any emotion and his deep dark eyes at the people standing near him and then at the examiner.

The examiner, who had previously introduced himself as the prison warden, had watched the participants' progress through a monitor.

"Only the Fourth Phase and the Final Phase remain. The Fourth Phase will take place over there, on Zevil Island," he said, pointing to a distant island.

"Let us proceed!" He clapped his hands twice, summoning a man who pushed a cart with a peculiar black box on top. The box had a square hole with four arrows pointing outward. Togiri discreetly slipped his number tag into his pocket.

'I've already memorized everyone's number, face and tendencies. Being first place does have it advantages. Hisoka and Illumi surely knew I was observing them and others while playing poker together the last 3 days'

@Unlike the original story, there are a few extra participants. Whats the big deal? Just your existence and your decision to participate at the same time as the protagonists of the story is a variable@

'...For you to say something intelligent....' @You bas-@ "I need you to draw lots," said the examiner.

"Lots?" "For what?" several examinees asked in confusion. The examiner grinned, his voice taking on an eerie tone. "To determine who will hunt and who will be hunted."

Fang noticed Togiri's plaque was missing and followed suit, hiding his own tag.

'Fang's intuition is remarkable. Everything about him is unbalanced. He's smart, handsome, talented, with a great personality, but he's too straightforward and naive, but thats only because he is a kid, but even then he has quite matured over the years.'

@If he had a cunning and sly personality, he might end up evil.@

'That wouldn't necessary be true. Your environment and innate talent shape who you are. He focuses on what's right in front of him, never looking too far ahead, because I do the most complex thinking for him. Unlike Gon who is stupidly brave, Fang's courage is built on experience and on his strength. His courage also increases dramatically when I'm near since in his eyes I'm the strongest'

@Ha.Hahaha. You the strongest? Fang surpassed caught up and surpassed you in Nen and Aura capacity in 2 years. You started earlier and trained like a possessed devil while Fang trained casually. @

'I will go back to thinking only to myself' Togiri could communicate with Seven through several ways and one of them was telepathic, speaking directly to Seven.

He also could let Seven read his thoughts or completely block him out of his mind. This was a feature Togiri added in his first year living under a bridge and on the streets.

"In the box are twenty-nine numbered cards. Your ID numbers are on the cards. I need each of you to draw a card, in the order you exited the tower. First person, step forward," the examiner instructed, gesturing welcomingly.

"Excuse me. Coming through! Please make some way! Sigh, forget it." Togiri leaped over the crowd, landing almost silently in front of the box.

'These shoes are great for noise reductions, but I am still not as good as Killua when moving silent.'

"The second person, please," the examiner called. Hisoka stepped forward and drew a card, his clothes bearing the marks of a recent battle. His shoulder was gashed, and his thin waist had a smaller cut.

Next was Hirotaku, who also drew a card, and the process continued until only one person remained—Fang. He took the last card from the box and rejoined his friends.

"Everyone has their card? Then, remove the seal," the examiner ordered. As they complied, he added, "The card indicates your target."

Togiri swiftly moved behind Gon, peeking at his card before returning to his place with a satisfied grin.

'He still got Hisoka. Coincidence? Or is it the plot at work? There are no coincidences. Let's test something…'

Togiri had drawn the number of someone he had previously saved. 'It paid off.' Thought Togiri a little satisfied.

The examinees concealed or hid their plaques, except for Togiri and Fang. 'How did Togiri know we'd hide our number tags?' Killua wondered.

Fang, on the other hand, wasn't suspicious or surprised. There were a few times Togiri acted like he knew the future, but most of the time he didnt. Also he trusted Togiri completely and was confident that Togiri would one day share all his secrets.

"This box recorded which card each of you drew, so you're free to dispose of the cards if you wish. The objective is to steal your target's ID," the examiner explained.

"Oh, so we don't need to kill each other," the youngest of the three brothers sighed in relief. These brothers had previously helped Tonpa eliminate rookies.

The examiner's sinister smile returned. "Naturally, you're free to use any method to steal the ID tags, including killing your target and taking the tag from the corpse."

"That sounds like the fastest way," the middle brother remarked. "S-So that's what this is about?" the youngest stammered. "Fool, there's nothing to be scared of," the oldest brother reassured him.

"Listen carefully!" the examiner commanded, raising his hand to gather everyone's attention.

"Your target's ID tag is worth three points. Your own ID is also worth three points. All other ID tags are worth one point. You need six points to advance to the Final Phase. So, while on Zevil Island, you must gather enough ID tags to total six points. That is the condition for clearing the Hunter Exam's Fourth Phase."

Seven said excitedly @This is gonna be fun!@ Togiri remained indifferent as usual and his dark abyss like eyes seemed to only grow darker while a little devilish grin appeared on his face.

Togiri blocked Seven out of his thought and said to himself 'Should I kill him or not and how will it impact the story? After the Hunter Exam I don't plan to have anymore involvement with these guys'
