Hunger Games - District 0

Chapter 3: Chapter 3 : The Girl in the Gray

**Chapter 3: The Girl in the Gray**

Kael stood frozen in the corridor, his knife still gripped tightly in his hand. The girl was gone, disappearing into the shadows as quickly as she had appeared. His heart pounded in his chest, his mind racing with questions. Who was she? Why was she here? And why had she just… walked away?

He forced himself to move, slipping out of the room and into the hallway. The facility was eerily quiet, the only sound the faint hum of fluorescent lights overhead. Kael's boots echoed softly against the floor as he followed the path the girl had taken, his senses on high alert. Every shadow seemed to shift, every corner seemed to hide a new threat.

The corridor branched off into two directions. Kael hesitated, glancing down each path. There was no sign of the girl, no indication of which way she had gone. He clenched his jaw, frustration bubbling beneath the surface. He didn't have time for this. He needed to find Lira, get the information they came for, and get out.

But something about the girl nagged at him. Her unnatural stillness, her glowing eyes—it wasn't normal. And in a place like this, nothing was a coincidence.

Kael turned left, moving quickly but quietly. The hallway was lined with doors, each one marked with a number and a symbol he didn't recognize. He paused at one, his hand hovering over the keypad. The door was slightly ajar, and a faint light spilled out from inside.

He pushed the door open slowly, his knife at the ready. The room was small and dimly lit, filled with monitors and control panels. A single chair sat in the center, facing a wall of screens. Kael's breath caught in his throat as he realized what he was looking at.

Security footage.

The screens showed different parts of the facility—hallways, rooms, even the perimeter. Kael's eyes darted from one screen to the next, searching for any sign of Lira or the girl. His heart sank as he realized the cameras covered every inch of the building. If they had been spotted, it was only a matter of time before the Peacekeepers found them.

He moved closer to the screens, his eyes narrowing. One of the feeds showed a figure moving through a hallway—Lira. She was crouched low, her slingshot in hand, her movements quick and precise. Kael let out a breath he didn't realize he'd been holding. At least she was still safe.

Another screen caught his attention. It showed a room filled with rows of glass tanks, each one containing a pale, lifeless figure. Kael's stomach churned as he realized what he was looking at. Experiments. The Capitol was experimenting on people.

His hands clenched into fists, his knuckles white. This was worse than he'd thought. Whatever Project Rebirth was, it wasn't just a research lab. It was a nightmare.

A sound behind him made him spin around, his knife raised. The girl stood in the doorway, her glowing eyes fixed on him. She didn't move, didn't speak. She just stared.

"Who are you?" Kael demanded, his voice low but sharp. "What do you want?"

The girl tilted her head, her expression unreadable. Then, without a word, she turned and walked away.

Kael hesitated for only a moment before following her. He didn't know why, but something told him she was the key to understanding what was happening here. He moved quickly, keeping his distance but never letting her out of his sight.

The girl led him deeper into the facility, through winding corridors and past rooms filled with strange equipment. Kael's unease grew with every step. The place was a maze, and he was losing track of where he was. If he didn't find Lira soon, they'd both be trapped.

Finally, the girl stopped in front of a door. She turned to look at him, her eyes meeting his for a brief moment before she stepped inside. Kael followed, his knife still in hand.

The room was unlike anything he'd seen before. It was large and circular, with a domed ceiling and walls lined with screens. In the center of the room was a raised platform, and on that platform was a single chair. The girl walked over to it and sat down, her movements slow and deliberate.

Kael stepped closer, his eyes scanning the room. The screens on the walls showed images of people—faces he didn't recognize, but who looked eerily similar to the girl. Each one had the same pale skin, the same glowing eyes.

"What is this place?" Kael asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

The girl didn't answer. Instead, she reached up and touched a panel on the arm of the chair. The screens flickered to life, showing images of the Capitol, of District 0, of people being rounded up and taken away. Kael's breath caught in his throat as he realized what he was seeing.

The Capitol's plan.

The images shifted, showing blueprints and diagrams. Kael's eyes widened as he recognized the facility they were in. It wasn't just a research lab—it was a factory. A factory for creating something… or someone.

"Project Rebirth," Kael muttered, his voice trembling. "They're creating soldiers."

The girl nodded, her expression solemn. She reached up again, touching the panel. The screens changed, showing a map of Panem. Red dots marked different locations—District 0, the Capitol, and several others Kael didn't recognize.

"What are you trying to tell me?" Kael asked, his frustration growing. "Who are you?"

The girl stood and walked over to one of the screens. She pointed to a red dot—District 0. Then she pointed to herself.

Kael's heart sank as he realized what she was saying. "You're from District 0."

She nodded.

"And they… they did this to you?"

Another nod.

Kael's hands clenched into fists, his nails digging into his palms. The Capitol had taken everything from him—his family, his home, his future. And now they were doing this. Turning people into weapons. Turning his people into monsters.

"We have to stop them," Kael said, his voice firm. "We have to destroy this place."

The girl shook her head, her expression sad. She pointed to the screens, to the red dots scattered across the map.

"There are more," Kael realized. "More facilities. More… experiments."

The girl nodded.

Kael's mind raced. This wasn't just about District 0 anymore. This was bigger than any of them. If the Capitol was creating an army of soldiers, no one was safe.

"We need to get out of here," Kael said, turning to the girl. "We need to warn the others."

The girl hesitated, then nodded. She reached up and touched the panel one last time. The screens went dark, and the room was plunged into silence.

Kael turned to leave, but the girl grabbed his arm. Her grip was surprisingly strong, her glowing eyes filled with urgency.

"What is it?" Kael asked.

The girl pointed to the door, then to herself. She shook her head.

"You can't leave," Kael realized.

She nodded, her expression resigned.

Kael's heart ached for her. She was a prisoner, just like everyone else in District 0. But she was also the key to stopping the Capitol. He couldn't leave her behind.

"I'll come back for you," Kael promised. "I'll find a way to get you out."

The girl's eyes softened, and for the first time, she smiled. It was small and sad, but it was enough.

Kael turned and left the room, his mind racing. He needed to find Lira and get out of here. But he also needed to figure out how to stop the Capitol. And he needed to do it fast.

---

The facility was a maze, and Kael was quickly losing track of where he was. He moved through the corridors as quickly as he dared, his knife at the ready. Every sound made him jump, every shadow made him second-guess himself. He couldn't shake the feeling that he was being watched.

Finally, he found Lira. She was crouched in a corner, her slingshot in hand, her eyes scanning the hallway. She looked up as he approached, her expression a mix of relief and frustration.

"Where have you been?" she hissed. "I've been looking everywhere for you."

"I found something," Kael said, his voice low. "Something big."

Lira's eyes narrowed. "What?"

Kael hesitated, unsure of how to explain. "There's a girl. She's… different. And there's a project. Project Rebirth. They're creating soldiers, Lira. They're turning people into weapons."

Lira's eyes widened. "What are you talking about?"

"I don't have time to explain," Kael said. "We need to get out of here. Now."

Lira nodded, though she still looked confused. "Alright. Let's go."

They moved quickly, retracing their steps through the facility. Kael's heart pounded with every step, his mind racing with thoughts of the girl, the screens, the map. They needed to warn the others. They needed to stop the Capitol.

But first, they needed to survive.

---

The exit was just ahead. Kael could see the gap in the wall, the faint light of the moon shining through. He quickened his pace, Lira close behind him. They were almost there. Almost free.

A sound behind them made them both freeze. Kael turned, his knife raised, just as a Peacekeeper stepped into view. The man's helmet obscured his face, but Kael could feel his eyes on them.

"Run," Kael whispered.

They didn't need to be told twice. They sprinted for the exit, the Peacekeeper's footsteps echoing behind them. Kael's heart pounded in his chest, his breath coming in short gasps. They were so close.

They burst through the gap and into the night air, the cool breeze a welcome relief. But the Peacekeeper was still behind them, his shouts growing louder.

"This way!" Lira grabbed Kael's arm and pulled him into the shadows, their footsteps silent against the cracked pavement. They moved quickly, weaving through the streets of District 0 until the Peacekeeper's shouts faded into the distance.

Finally, they stopped, crouched behind a crumbling wall. Kael's chest heaved as he tried to catch his breath, his mind still racing.

"What the hell was that?" Lira demanded, her voice low but sharp.

Kael shook his head. "I'll explain later. We need to get back to the safe house."

Lira nodded, though she still looked furious. "This isn't over, Kael."

"I know," Kael said, his voice grim. "It's only just beginning."
