Chapter 81: Defense and breakthrough
Roger and Jeremy didn't follow the usual coverage tactics but instead veered off, cutting across the Hufflepuff chasers' paths like a pair of birds disrupting a formation.
"I see their strategy!" Lee Jordan's voice carried an edge of excitement as he grinned knowingly from the commentator's stand. "They're betting everything on Vizet!"
Even as he spoke, the Hufflepuff Beaters coordinated seamlessly, swinging their bats in unison and launching the Bludger straight at Vizet.
It wasn't just a regular hit — both had struck the Bludger at once, sending it hurtling through the air with terrifying speed, a black cannonball locked onto its target.
"Double strike!" Lee Jordan shouted. "Hufflepuff must've been practicing this — no wonder Wood mentioned they had a secret weapon!"
A ripple of tension spread through the stadium.
"Wait — Ravenclaw's Beaters aren't nearby! They're busy dealing with the other Bludger! Vizet has no cover!" Lee's voice rose with urgency. "It's closing in — why isn't he changing direction? Is he out of his mind?!"
The Bludger streaked toward Vizet like a meteor. Any sane player would swerve, slow down — do something.
But Vizet didn't.
Instead, he flipped his broom, an elegant, midair somersault that sent gasps rippling through the crowd. The Bludger screamed past, missing him by mere inches.
"He dodged it — upside down! Merlin's pink stockings!" Lee Jordan's voice cracked with disbelief. "He's moving like an eagle — no, he's more than that! It's like he was born for the sky!"
And then —
Goal!
The Quaffle sailed through the hoop, brushing past the Hufflepuff Keeper's outstretched fingertips.
Another explosion of cheers erupted from the Ravenclaw stands.
"Ravenclaw scores again!" Lee Jordan barely kept up. "This is incredible — less than two minutes, and Vizet's already put another ten points on the board!"
The Hufflepuff team looked rattled. Their formations wavered, hesitation creeping into their movements. Meanwhile, the Ravenclaw section of the stadium was roaring.
"This can't be happening, right?" Lee Jordan muttered, almost to himself. "I feel like I'm watching a professional Quidditch player showing off!"
On the field, Hufflepuff scrambled to reorganize, but Vizet's relentless pace was merciless. Within ten minutes, he had run a blistering offense, allowing Hufflepuff only a single goal in return. The scoreboard gleamed:
Ravenclaw 70 - Hufflepuff 10.
It was no longer just a game; it was a massacre.
Hufflepuff had no choice but to call a timeout.
As Vizet landed, his teammates surged toward him.
Roger, his face flushed with exhilaration, clapped him on the shoulder. "Vizet, that was insane! A 60-point lead in ten minutes? I wouldn't have even dreamed of this last year!"
Duncan seized Vizet's arm, hoisting it into the air as if he'd already won them the cup. "We have Lovegood! Vizet Lovegood!"
"Calm down," Andre cut in, though his grin betrayed him. "This is just the first match of the year. We're not done yet."
The excitement dimmed slightly as his words sank in.
"They're going to start targeting Vizet now," Andre continued. "And we knew this would happen. Stick to the game plan. Keep up the pressure. Don't let them breathe."
"But what if they go straight for the Snitch?" Cho Chang, Ravenclaw's Seeker, voiced the concern lingering in everyone's mind. Her dark eyes flickered toward the sky. "I was watching Cedric — he might have seen it."
Andre hesitated. "It's a real possibility," he admitted. "Cedric's no joke — last year, he nearly kept up with Charlie..."
His voice trailed off in thought before he gave Cho a reassuring pat on the shoulder.
"Don't stress too much," he told her. "They called for the timeout, which means they lost sight of it, too."
Vizet, still catching his breath, had been listening quietly. Then suddenly an idea struck him —
"The Snitch..."
His golden eyes narrowed slightly.
Without a word, he activated the Eye of Insight.
The world sharpened, his vision slicing through the layers of motion around him. The roaring crowd, the shifting players, the distant shimmer of the goalposts — he filtered all of it out, focusing only on what was hidden.
And then —
There.
A tiny golden flicker, darting unpredictably through the air, nearly invisible to the naked eye.
The Snitch.
If not for the Eye of Insight, he would've had to rise to high altitude and maintain razor-sharp focus just to catch a glimpse of it.
Madam Hooch's whistle cut through the stadium noise like a blade.
"Time's up!" she called, floating down on her broom with a practiced ease.
Setting down the locked Bludger box, she turned to both teams. "If you need another timeout, you'll have to wait until after takeoff."
Her sharp gaze swept over them. "Ravenclaw has two timeouts left. Hufflepuff only has one. Be mindful!"
"We're good to go!" the Hufflepuff players confirmed, mounting their brooms.
Madam Hooch nodded in approval. With a swift flick, she released the Bludgers. The Quaffle nestled in the crook of her arm, she counted down —
"Three… two… one… Game on!"
The whistle blew.
"Let's get back to it!" Lee Jordan's voice rang through the stands, carrying a renewed excitement. "Vizet's speed has thrown Hufflepuff off their game! They're scrambling to figure out how to stop him!"
The Quaffle shot skyward — and Vizet was there in an instant.
"He's got it again!" Lee practically shouted. "Seriously, what is with him? He's playing on a Five-Star Sweep, and he's still outpacing everyone! I'm telling you, the next team is definitely going to start studying him!"
Then, something odd caught his attention.
"Wait — what's this? Why aren't the Hufflepuff Chasers attacking?"
Lee scanned the field, his voice slowing as he processed the scene. "Something's off… Let's check the other end of the pitch…"
High above, Cedric Diggory was still circling, eyes locked on the sky as he searched for the Snitch. But the rest of the Hufflepuff team?
They weren't advancing.
Instead, they hovered just outside their scoring area, their formation locked in place like an unmovable wall.
Lee Jordan let out a low whistle. "Ah. A clever move — though maybe not the most thrilling for the crowd."
"Hufflepuff's playing it safe! A classic, steady strategy — they're digging in, waiting for their moment!"
From the other side of the pitch, Andre's voice rang out in frustration.
"Use the Bludgers!" he roared. "Break their defense! Force an opening!"
He clenched his fists, unable to do anything but watch. Vizet's speed was unmatched, but the rest of the team still needed to find their rhythm.
Hufflepuff, on the other hand, was executing a textbook defensive lockout — huddling around their scoring area, guarding their rings like sentinels.
Ravenclaw's Beaters, Johnson and Duncan, worked relentlessly, hammering the Bludgers toward the yellow-clad defense, trying to pry them apart.
But Hufflepuff wasn't breaking.
Vizet managed to slip through occasionally, capitalizing on the rare gaps his teammates created — but it wasn't enough to maintain the relentless momentum he'd started with.
The pace slowed.
The tension shifted.
The crowd's energy dipped slightly, and in the commentator's box, Lee Jordan scrambled to keep things engaging.
"Hufflepuff's double strike defense is rock solid! Their Beaters keep knocking the Bludgers back without so much as budging their formation!"
"This is shaping up to be a real battle — young eagle versus honey badger! Ravenclaw may have the lead, but Hufflepuff still has a shot!"
The scoreboard flickered:
Ravenclaw: 170 - Hufflepuff: 40.
Lee's tone grew sharper. "Remember, if Cedric catches the Snitch, Hufflepuff will get 150-points and win the game!"
And as if on cue — Cedric moved.
Suddenly, he dived, his broom tilting sharply as he streaked across the pitch.
"Wait — hold everything!" Lee Jordan's voice shot up an octave. "Cedric's seen something! He's going for it!"
The crowd roared.
Up in the air, Cho Chang reacted instantly.
Without hesitation, she leaned forward, her Comet 260 responding like an extension of her body. She streaked after Cedric, locked in pursuit.
"Cho Chang is closing in!" Lee bellowed. "The Comet 260 is one of the best out there — great acceleration, tight turns — she's keeping up with him!"
The two Seekers shot through the air like twin bolts of lightning, their eyes locked on a single, glimmering speck —
The Snitch.
And the game was about to change.
