Chapter 308: Don't inquire about geniuses
"Actually... I have a little problem," Blake said, his voice breaking the momentary silence in the car.
Grindelwald, fiddling with the car controls, looked at him casually. "What's the problem?"
Blake hesitated. "Uh... how did this car get here?"
Grindelwald puffed up his chest with pride. "Ahem, of course, I drove it here!"
Blake gave him a sceptical look. "But you can't even start it..."
"I just forgot how!" Grindelwald admitted, sounding a bit embarrassed now.
He had thought driving a Muggle car would be easy. After all, how difficult could it be? But as the gears ground uselessly and the car didn't budge, reality hit him—driving wasn't as simple as he'd imagined.
Blake, unable to watch the awkward struggle any longer, said, "Maybe... you should let the driver come out and handle this."
Grindelwald winced. The car was idling, and he was still messing up the gears. "No! The car only has two seats. If the driver comes back, where would you sit?"
Grindelwald realized too late that he had slipped up, accidentally revealing that someone else had driven the car here. Blake raised an eyebrow.
"Oh, I see. Well, we could always just use magic to get back home. Why bother with the car?"
Grindelwald sighed, frustrated. He had wanted to impress Blake by driving him back himself, to show him the scenery while cruising in the car.
But now, things clearly weren't going as planned. He slumped in his seat, realizing this wasn't going to be the grand experience he had hoped for.
Blake scratched his head. "You know... I could drive it."
Grindelwald looked at him with doubt. "You? You can drive?"
"Of course! I can even drive an excavator!" Blake boasted, smiling smugly. He added with a hint of amusement,
"Did you think those skills I've been practising are for nothing? Let me show you what it means to have intermediate driving proficiency."
Grindelwald blinked in confusion. "Wait, you're serious? You really can drive?"
Blake sighed, "Why would I lie to you?"
Grindelwald, though still sceptical, gave in and got out of the car. The two switched seats, and Blake slid into the driver's seat with confidence. He had gained a driving skill from the system after all. Although he also drove in his previous life.
The steering wheel felt surprisingly natural in his hands, thanks to the system's mastery skill. It was as if he had been driving for decades, even though he hadn't touched a car in over ten years.
"Fasten your seatbelt," Blake said, adjusting the seat to fit his eleven-year-old frame.
Grindelwald watched as Blake expertly put the car in gear, pressed the accelerator, and let go of the clutch. The car surged forward, smoothly hitting the road.
"Oh!" Grindelwald exclaimed, clearly impressed. The sudden jump had surprised him, but there was no denying that Blake was handling the car with ease.
Despite his excitement, Grindelwald couldn't help but ask, "Where did you learn to drive? You can't possibly have taken the driver's license test at your age."
"Please, I'm eleven. Do you think I'd be able to get a driver's license?" Blake replied, annoyed by the obvious question.
"Then how are you so good at this?" Grindelwald asked, still baffled by Blake's skills.
"Don't inquire about geniuses," Blake answered vaguely.
He wasn't about to explain the whole story, especially since Grindelwald already knew he wasn't an ordinary person. LBlake would let him come to his own conclusions.
Blake expertly manoeuvred the car through the city streets, smoothly avoiding traffic. Grindelwald, watching the cars dart by, clutched his seatbelt tighter.
He recalled how Blake had also mastered broom-flying almost instantly when he first tried it. He thought, if Blake could handle flying, controlling a Muggle car must be a walk in the park.
It all made sense to Grindelwald now. Blake had grown up in the Muggle world, so he had probably learned driving somewhere along the way. It wasn't as unbelievable as it first seemed.
The two of them enjoyed their drive for a while, but there was one tiny issue—Blake was an eleven-year-old behind the wheel of a convertible. It didn't take long for people to notice.
Soon enough, the police were on their tail.
"The vehicle in front! Pull over immediately!" came the loud command over a police car's speaker.
Sirens blared behind them as several police cars approached, their flashing lights reflecting in the car's rearview mirror.
Grindelwald's eyes lit up. "Are they chasing us for a race?"
Blake groaned. "What? No! If you hadn't used the Imperius Curse to pass your driving test, you'd know those are traffic police!"
Grindelwald looked disappointed. "Traffic police? What's that?" His eyes drifted to a nearby police officer on horseback. "Oh look, they have horses!"
Blake clenched his teeth, trying to stay focused on driving. "Traffic police are the Muggle equivalent of Aurors, but they manage traffic."
Grindelwald was still smiling, oblivious to the gravity of the situation. He watched Blake deftly turn down a small side road with a sharp drift. "That was cool!" Grindelwald exclaimed.
"So, they're like Muggle Aurors, then?"
"Yes! And they're after us because I'm underage, I don't have a driver's license, and we're speeding!" Blake was losing his patience.
Despite the intensity of the situation, Grindelwald was still enjoying the thrill of the chase. He leaned back and said, "This is actually quite exciting, isn't it?"
Blake wasn't amused. He had managed to lose the police for a moment by darting through some narrow streets, but it was only a matter of time before they caught up again. And sure enough, more police cars appeared in the distance.
Blake sighed heavily and turned to Grindelwald. "Do you have your wand?"
Grindelwald looked confused. "Why do you ask? Are you planning to use magic?"
"Yes! Help me out here! Use a Confusion Charm on them or something!" Blake was nearly at his wit's end.
Grindelwald raised an eyebrow, amused. "You're telling me what to do now, Blake?"
"Yes! Hurry up, or we'll never make it home at this rate!" Blake was on the verge of freaking out, his voice bordering on a shout.
"Alright, alright," Grindelwald said with a smirk. He casually waved his hand, casting the Confundus Charm without even needing his wand.
Suddenly, the police cars slowed down, and the officers looked bewildered, clearly having lost track of their target. Blake breathed a sigh of relief as he eased off the accelerator, finally able to slow the car down without worrying about getting caught.
Grindelwald, however, seemed slightly disappointed. "That was a lot of fun, though, wasn't it?"
Blake rolled his eyes, staring at the road ahead. "You let me—a literal child—drive you around while being chased by the police. Do you think this is some video game like Los Santos?"
Grindelwald simply chuckled to himself, clearly enjoying the thrill. For him, this was just another exciting chapter in his life, but Blake couldn't shake the feeling that he'd somehow gotten more than he bargained for by getting into that car.
