28. The Berserker's Creed
“Ling Ning, that guy is here again, and this time he’s brought a huge bouquet of roses~” Zhou Xiaoxiao said gleefully, clearly enjoying Ling Ning’s predicament.
Ever since Ling Ning turned down Zhao Tiancheng, he had been showing up at the café almost every day, bringing different gifts each time. Although Ling Ning rejected all of them without exception, Zhao Tiancheng didn’t seem to mind at all.
From the looks of it, Zhao Tiancheng was clearly a wealthy young master. The gifts aside, the cost of his daily consumption at the café was not cheap. Ling Ning suspected her commissions had been boosted quite a bit thanks to him. Most girls might be a little swayed by such persistence, but was Ling Ning just any ordinary girl?
“Ugh~”
With a helpless sigh, Ling Ning got up to go serve him. After all, the customer was king. She never thought she’d have to deal with being pursued by a man one day, and her feelings were… complicated, to say the least. Honestly, she’d rather consider something as outlandish as compensated dating than get romantically involved with a guy.
The moment Zhao Tiancheng saw her approach, his eyes lit up, and he greeted her with a broad smile, “Ah, Xiao Qian, you’re here!”
“Uh, right…” Ling Ning almost didn’t respond, taken aback by him calling her “Xiao Qian.”
After she sat down, Ling Ning smiled politely, listening to Zhao Tiancheng chat with her. Yet the empty look in her eyes made it clear her thoughts were elsewhere. Zhao Tiancheng, totally captivated by Ling Ning’s charm, failed to notice. He just kept rambling on with his cheerful chatter.
“Just one more day, and I’ll finally have a break—one blessed day without this annoying guy in front of me,” Ling Ning thought as she listened absentmindedly to Zhao Tiancheng’s ramblings. “I wonder what Ling Ye is up to now? Probably playing on the computer. I downloaded Berserker’s Creed for her yesterday. I wonder if she’s playing it. Ah, now I’m tempted to play too.” Her skills in pretending to be interested while mentally drifting off were getting sharper by the day.
After spending a while with Zhao Tiancheng, she soon found a convenient excuse to escape—she really couldn’t stand listening to a man’s ramblings for that long.
Ling Ning quickly slipped into Luo Xiaoning’s “Eternal Realm of Silence,” where Luo Xiaoning was still wrapped in a blanket, browsing some major same-sex dating website.
“Would it kill you to turn on the lights in here?” Ling Ning complained, feeling the cold blast of air conditioning. She had never understood why Luo Xiaoning insisted on keeping the lights off all the time. She casually made her way over to the sofa and plopped down.
“That ‘heaven-sent enforcer’ is here for you again, isn’t he?” Luo Xiaoning asked without looking up.
“Yeah, it’s so annoying.”
“Hey, Ling Ning, do you think there’s any future in same-sex relationships?” Luo Xiaoning suddenly asked.
“Huh?” Ling Ning froze for a moment. Was Luo Xiaoning into her? Could this be a roundabout confession? Okay, okay—no need to overthink it. Even her chest could tell that wasn’t possible. But just because she wasn’t interested in her didn’t mean she wasn’t interested in someone else—maybe Chu Mengyao, for instance.
The more Ling Ning thought about it, the more plausible it seemed. Chu Mengyao was always the one tidying up this room, and she and Luo Xiaoning practically lived together. Plus, they had grown up together. The more she thought, the more sense it made.
“There’s a saying that goes something like this: ‘Love knows no race or gender.’ It could also mean ‘the person I like just so happens to be a girl or a guy.’ Whether there’s a future depends on the people involved, though.”
“You sound so authoritative, like you’ve really experienced this yourself.” Luo Xiaoning rolled her eyes, unsure why she had asked a girl several years younger than herself for relationship advice.
“How could you falsely accuse me of such things?” Ling Ning retorted, acting all innocent. She may have sounded like she knew what she was talking about, but in her previous life, she had never pursued a guy. She’d only looked into these topics as research for writing novels.
“Esteemed Mistress of Silence, ruler of the Eternal Realm of Silence, adversary of the heavens, my sovereign—may I ask you a question?” Ling Ning suddenly switched to a tone dripping with melodrama.
“Ah, it seems you too are one of us—my Fifth Apostle, all-seeing Sage. Ask away, and I shall provide the answers you seek.”
“Actually, I’m planning to write a novel, but I’m not sure which platform to publish it on. Where do you usually read novels, Boss?” Dropping her dramatic tone, Ling Ning asked sincerely.
“A novel, huh~” Luo Xiaoning squinted, deep in thought. After a moment, she replied, “Well, sometimes I go to this site called ‘Final Chapter,’ which has a pretty large audience. It’s got a lot of competition too, though, and the content tends to be pretty mainstream—you know what I mean. And then there’s ‘WuKe.’ It’s smaller, but the competition is just as fierce. It’s more lenient in terms of content, though, and they have a more diverse selection of genres.”
Ling Ning nodded thoughtfully. Luo Xiaoning’s advice was clear, and Ling Ning had already started to form a plan in her mind.
“What kind of novel are you planning to write? Let me help you brainstorm.”
“Well, I’ve only written a rough outline so far. Basically, it’s about a middle-aged man who, in order to save his daughter, makes a pact with a certain perverted beast to become a magical girl and protect the world.”
“Whoa, sounds pretty fun! You could add in some kind of price for using powers. Like, every time he uses a special move, he gradually loses mobility, or every time he transforms, his soul gets a bit more corrupt. When it’s fully corrupt, he turns from a magical girl into a witch or something. Or you could give the protagonist a ‘make friends through cannon fire’ ability—whoever gets hit by his cannon joins his lavish harem.” The more she spoke, the more excited Luo Xiaoning became, even pausing the video she was watching to turn fully toward Ling Ning.
The more Luo Xiaoning talked, the more Ling Ning felt an intense sense of déjà vu. She suspected that, given time, Luo Xiaoning might suggest that the magical girls in the city had to kill each other to reduce resource waste or something. Ling Ning had already decided on the “price” for the protagonist—it was that he had to wear his daughter’s panties on his head to transform into a magical girl. Just thinking about it gave her a thrill.
“Ling Ning, that guy’s finally gone, you can come out now,” Zhou Xiaoxiao suddenly said as she opened the door and entered.
“Okay, I’ll be right there~” Ling Ning turned back to Luo Xiaoning. “Alright, that annoying guy is gone, so I have to get back to work.”
“Make sure to consider my ideas!” Luo Xiaoning called after her.
“Sure, sure.” Ling Ning waved her hand dismissively as she left the room.
