21. Two M's Together Will Never Find Happiness
“Ah, finally done.”
Ling Ning handed the last flyer to a middle-aged man, breathing a sigh of relief. She now fully understood how complicated it felt to be ignored by passersby while trying to distribute flyers. It was an experience she wouldn’t forget any time soon.
“Let’s go see if Zhou Xiaoxiao has finished on her side yet~”
Arriving at the plaza, Ling Ning recalled that Zhou Xiaoxiao had been handing out flyers somewhere nearby, yet now she was nowhere to be found. Once again, Ling Ning felt the inconvenience of not having a phone. As soon as she got paid, she would make sure to buy a phone for herself and Ling Ye.
Ling Ning began searching the perimeter of the plaza, figuring that Zhou Xiaoxiao, dressed like herself in a maid outfit, should still stand out quite a bit.
But after circling back to her starting point, she still couldn’t find her. Where on earth had Zhou Xiaoxiao gone? Even the cola Ling Ning had bought for her was now lukewarm. Surely she hadn’t already finished handing out the flyers and gone home? It didn’t seem likely, given that Zhou Xiaoxiao’s stack had been much larger than hers—even more after adding the ones Luo Xiaoning had given her.
Ling Ning scanned the surroundings and spotted a guy who looked every bit the stereotypical otaku. What’s that, you ask? Well, just take a look in the mirror, and you’ll see!
“Hey, excuse me, have you seen a girl in a maid outfit around here? Same outfit as mine, only with a longer skirt, uh… not very well-endowed, with twin tails?”
“Eh!?” The otaku blinked in confusion, originally about to say no, but upon seeing a pretty girl in a maid outfit talking to him, he stammered, “Um… I think… I saw her… with a boy, heading that way.” He pointed off to the right.
“Thanks~”
Ling Ning thanked him sweetly and walked in the direction he indicated. Sure enough, there was Zhou Xiaoxiao, still in her maid outfit, talking to a boy. Judging from Zhou Xiaoxiao’s expression, it didn’t seem like a pleasant conversation.
“I said I don’t need it!”
Before Ling Ning could get close, she heard Zhou Xiaoxiao yell angrily, causing her to stop in her tracks, completely taken aback. She had no idea what was happening.
After yelling, Zhou Xiaoxiao brushed the boy off and walked toward Ling Ning. Upon seeing her, she didn’t seem surprised at all, simply taking Ling Ning’s hand silently and leading her away from the spot. When they returned to the plaza, Zhou Xiaoxiao finally let go of her hand.
“Uh… I, um… I only heard that last sentence. Everything else I didn’t catch,” Ling Ning said cautiously.
“It’s nothing~” Zhou Xiaoxiao waved her hand dismissively and said, “That guy… well, you could call him my fiancé, I guess. Pretty funny, right? In this day and age, there’s still something like an arranged fiancé.”
“Uh…” Ling Ning was at a loss for words at this sudden revelation. All she could do was hand the now lukewarm cola to Zhou Xiaoxiao in silence.
Zhou Xiaoxiao took the cola, gulping it down, and then slowly continued, “We were childhood friends. My parents and his have known each other for many years, and our families have always been close. Honestly, he’s not a bad person, but… but…” Her expression grew strange, as if she had just remembered something.
“But… what?”
“But it turns out he likes cross-dressing, and he’s also an extreme masochist! I don’t have anything against boys wearing dresses—in fact, I think it can be a little exciting at times—but as for a masochist? That, I absolutely cannot accept. After all, two M’s together will never find happiness…”
“What!?” Ling Ning felt like she had just heard something she shouldn’t have.
Zhou Xiaoxiao seemed to realize she had said too much, quickly correcting herself, “I mean, two people together will never find happiness—don’t mishear me.”
“Alright, alright. I must’ve misheard. Anyway, I came to find you to see if you need help handing out the flyers.”
Zhou Xiaoxiao rolled her eyes and handed Ling Ning more than half of her stack, making it abundantly clear what her answer was.

With their combined effort, the flyers were finally all handed out.
Ling Ning stretched, her graceful figure catching the attention of Zhou Xiaoxiao, who stared enviously at Ling Ning’s curves before glancing at her own. The difference was all too obvious. What on earth did she have to do to get a figure like Ling Ning’s?
“Tsk!”
Ling Ning looked at Zhou Xiaoxiao in confusion, seeing her suddenly fall into a sulk. What was going on? Had she done something wrong?
Now that they had handed out all the flyers, their task was complete, and they could leave work early. Ling Ning had already planned to use the extra time today to take Ling Ye on a trip to the supermarket. Lately, because of work, she hadn’t had the chance to properly take her daughter out for a walk.
When they returned to the café, it was still quiet, just as expected. Despite handing out all those flyers, it was a weekday, so there weren’t many customers.
Qin Qing hadn’t left yet. She was chatting with Luo Xiaoning, the two of them laughing occasionally. The sound of their laughter sent a shiver down Ling Ning’s spine.
Ling Ye and Qin Sirou were watching anime on the computer, with even Ye Xuan sitting beside them, occasionally feeding the two kids bits of cake. It seemed like she was quite fond of them.
As soon as Ling Ning entered, Ling Ye bounded over and threw herself into her arms—that signature move of hers.
Ling Ning smiled helplessly, ruffling Ling Ye’s hair. “You didn’t cause any trouble for the older sisters, did you?”
Ling Ye shook her head and then dashed back to the computer to continue watching anime with Qin Sirou.
“Ling Ning, you’ve been keeping secrets, haven’t you? I had no idea you had such an adorable sister. I’m so excited!” Chu Mengyao exclaimed.
“You never asked, so I never said anything. But, uh, can you keep your distance from my—cough, my sister?” Ling Ning said with a sweet smile, though her eyes conveyed a more threatening message.
“Eh? Is she really your sister?”
Since she had been handing out flyers separately, Zhou Xiaoxiao had no idea about Ling Ye’s existence.
“Yep, that’s my sister, Ling Ye.”
“So cute~” Zhou Xiaoxiao approached with stars in her eyes, trying to get Ling Ye’s attention, but the little girl was entirely focused on the anime, not sparing Zhou Xiaoxiao even a glance.
Ling Ning could only shake her head helplessly before walking off to the changing room.
