14. Can You Even Play Reinhardt Without Flying?
The next day.
Chu Mengyao gazed at Ling Ning with an exasperated look. She had spent so long last night searching for Ling Ning and Ye Xuan, only to lose track of them completely, and she even had to deal with some punks who tried to hit on her. Though she had already used those punks as a means to blow off some steam, she still wasn’t satisfied.
Don’t get the wrong idea—Chu Mengyao’s family runs a martial arts dojo, and she was trained by her grandfather since childhood. A few punks were nothing to her; she could have easily handled twice that number without breaking a sweat.
“Did I do something wrong?” Ling Ning asked, feeling uneasy under Chu Mengyao’s gaze. She glanced down at her outfit, but nothing seemed out of place.
“N-nothing at all!” Chu Mengyao waved her hand dismissively. There was no way she could admit that she’d been tailing Ling Ning and got completely lost—it was too embarrassing to even mention.
It wasn’t just Chu Mengyao. Zhou Xiaoxiao and Xia You had the same expressions, their pouting faces resting on the bar as they stared at Ling Ning with similarly aggrieved looks. They must have been upset about tailing Ling Ning all night and getting nothing out of it.
Today was finally not as busy as the last two days. Just as Chu Mengyao had mentioned earlier, there were barely any customers, and the quietness was almost unsettling. Ling Ning yawned, sitting comfortably on the couch, enjoying the rare contrast.
“So, uh… do you guys wanna play… that game, you know… the one with all the handsome guys and pretty girls who randomly pull out their weapons and shoot at each other… the one with gorillas jumping all over the place,” Zhou Xiaoxiao said hesitantly.
“You mean ‘Overbutt,’ right?” Ling Ning asked, uncertain. She’d seen others play it in the internet café before, though it was a bit different from the version in her previous world. After all, she’d seen things like an angel wielding two shotguns, Bastion healing teammates, Torbjörn with a massive hammer, Zenyatta using Buddha’s Palm, and a Reinhardt that could fly.
“Yeah, that one! Do you play ‘Overbutt’ too?” Zhou Xiaoxiao’s eyes sparkled as she moved closer to Ling Ning, her large eyes brimming with excitement.
“Not really—I’ve only watched others play it.”
“Then let’s play a bit together. I’ll carry you; I’m already level thirty!” Zhou Xiaoxiao pointed to the computers in the shop, which were there because some customers enjoyed gaming while they visited. Whenever they were free, the maids were welcome to use them.
“Isn’t playing games during work hours kind of… not allowed?”
“It’s fine,” Zhou Xiaoxiao replied nonchalantly, waving her hand. She pointed at Chu Mengyao, who was sitting nearby, engrossed in some game on her phone, mumbling something like “Ghost Armor” and “Moonlight.”
Ling Ning shrugged, then switched on one of the computers. She found “Overbutt” and opened it. She discovered, to her surprise, that this world’s “Butt” was completely free to play, which explained why so many kids in the internet café were glued to it.
Upon entering the game, the familiar interface greeted her. She spent a while familiarizing herself with all the heroes’ abilities, noting that many of them had been modified. Zhou Xiaoxiao, unable to contain her impatience, had already jumped into a match herself and predictably lost.
Ling Ning watched Zhou Xiaoxiao play, and one word came to mind: “trash.” Two words? “Really trash.” Three words? “Absolutely terrible.” Zhou Xiaoxiao even managed to get her Reinhardt knocked off a cliff—what a disgrace to all Reinhardts. From start to finish, she barely had Reinhardt take flight a handful of times.
Honestly, if Reinhardt isn’t flying, is it even worth playing?
Seeing that Ling Ning was finally ready, Zhou Xiaoxiao pulled her into a party and queued for a quick match. At first, Zhou Xiaoxiao assumed Ling Ning was an even bigger noob than she was. However, after playing a while, she realized how wrong she was. Ling Ning’s seamless controls, the way she toyed with the enemy team—all of it left Zhou Xiaoxiao in awe.
Ling Ning smiled faintly. In her previous life, she was among the top 500 Overwatch players, ranked near the top. This low-tier, casual match, even with modded heroes, was still easy for her to dominate.
Just as she was getting complacent, an arrow seemingly from nowhere struck her Mercy’s head, killing her instantly. Watching the death replay, it turned out the opposing Hanzo had casually fired an arrow, then blinked into place perfectly, catching her with a headshot. Ling Ning could only sigh and think, “Our paths have crossed, indeed.”
After watching Ling Ning’s fancy moves, Zhou Xiaoxiao’s eyes gleamed with admiration. “Ling Ning, wasn’t this your first time playing? How are you so good?”
“Huh?” Ling Ning tilted her head and replied with a smile, “Well, maybe it’s because I’ve played a similar game before~”
“Then can you teach me?” Zhou Xiaoxiao asked, her eyes filled with expectation.
Ling Ning sighed and spread her hands, saying, “There’s no shortcut to learning this. It mainly comes down to practicing repeatedly to improve your skills and reflexes. I can teach you some training methods, though.”
“Yes, please!” Zhou Xiaoxiao beamed, her eyes glinting as if she could already see herself pulling off impressive moves in the future.
After showing Zhou Xiaoxiao the practice methods, Ling Ning turned her attention back to her research. She had intended to visit the internet café at some point, but now that she had access to a computer here, it was perfect. She quickly grabbed some paper and a pen, jotting down any useful information she found to organize later.
Chu Mengyao, noticing Ling Ning scribbling something down at the computer, curiously walked over. “What are you up to? Don’t tell me you still haven’t finished your summer homework?”
Ling Ning gave her a blank stare and replied calmly, “Summer homework? I finished that ages ago.”
She wasn’t lying. Early on after her transmigration, she’d discovered the already completed summer assignments. From the notes, it seemed that Ling Ning was an academically excellent student.
“Already done? Summer just started!” Chu Mengyao sounded genuinely surprised.
“I’m about to start my third year of high school. The school requires us to start classes half a month early. I’ll probably have to go back after this month,” Ling Ning replied, her face reflecting a mix of resignation and frustration.
“What?! Only half a month early? When I was in school, we barely got a ten-day break before starting again. That’s totally unfair!” Chu Mengyao grumbled, clearly annoyed by the disparity.
Ling Ning didn’t bother responding to Chu Mengyao and continued her research. Chu Mengyao didn’t seem upset by the lack of attention. Instead, she smiled mischievously and sidled up next to Ling Ning, noticing that she was researching magical girls.
“You’re really into magical girl anime, even at your age?” Chu Mengyao teased.
“Magical girls are for kids?” Ling Ning retorted, giving Chu Mengyao a scornful look. She shook her head and added, “You’ve obviously never seen Madoka Magica.”
“Madoka Magica? What’s that?” Chu Mengyao asked, puzzled.
“…” Ling Ning didn’t even know where to begin.
