12. How Did Things End Up Like This? Clearly...
“Is the world ending or something? What on earth am I witnessing?!”
Chu Mengyao stood frozen, staring at Ye Xuan, who was laughing and chatting with Ling Ning. What was happening today? Since when did the Ice Queen descend to Earth? Just yesterday, she had barely given Ling Ning the time of day, and now, what was with that smile? Ever since Ye Xuan had started working here, Chu Mengyao had practically never seen her smile.
It hadn’t even been a full day, yet her attitude had completely changed. Had something happened after they finished work yesterday?
“How did things turn out like this?! Clearly… it was me first. The first time I found a junior I actually liked, the first time I found someone I could be friends with for life. Two happy things coinciding, and those two bits of happiness were supposed to bring me even more joy. I was supposed to get a dream-like happy time… but why did things end up like this?”
Chu Mengyao remembered that every time she tried talking to Ye Xuan, the most she got was a half-hearted “ah,” “oh,” or “mm.” When had they ever talked and laughed like this?
It wasn’t just Chu Mengyao. Even Zhou Xiaoxiao, who was at the bar pouring tea, looked dumbfounded at Ling Ning and Ye Xuan. She didn’t even notice the tea spilling over her cup. As for Xia You, she had practically shrunk behind the sofa, only her big, watery eyes peeking out.
At that moment, the door to the “Land of Eternal Silence” slowly cracked open. Luo Xiaoning—or rather, the “Mistress of Silence”—peeked through the gap with her red-and-black heterochromatic eyes to assess the situation inside.
Seeing there weren’t many customers, she opened the door fully and stepped out, still wearing her black Gothic outfit.
Luo Xiaoning struck what she thought was an impressively cool pose (at least in her mind) and, in an exaggeratedly chuuni tone, declared, “My third Apostle, the Witch of Nine Hells (Xia You), why has my offering (breakfast) not yet been presented?”
“Ah! S-sorry, I-I’ll go make it right now!”
Xia You hurriedly tried to make her way to the kitchen, but she was clearly a bit clumsy. As she passed by Ling Ning, she tripped on her own feet and was about to faceplant when, fortunately, Ling Ning’s quick reflexes kicked in, and she grabbed Xia You’s hand. But Ling Ning overestimated her own strength, and they both ended up falling in a heap.
“S-sorry!” Xia You struggled to get up, but her hand ended up touching something soft. She looked down, realizing that Ling Ning was staring up at her in shock, and the place her hand was touching was Ling Ning’s chest.
Xia You’s face turned beet red at an alarming speed. She quickly scrambled up, her hand covering her flushed face, and ran into the kitchen, yelling, “I’m so sorry!” all the way.
Ling Ning felt utterly defeated. No! She couldn’t even be defeated anymore, since she wasn’t… in that way… anymore. Usually, shouldn’t it be her on top? She had been the one to pull Xia You back, so why had it turned out like this?
Ling Ning slowly got up, thankful that it was still early and there weren’t many customers yet. Otherwise, where would she put her face? To be pushed down by a cute girl like that—it was beyond embarrassing.
“Are you okay?” Ye Xuan asked with concern.
“I’m fine,” Ling Ning replied, waving it off and brushing off imaginary dust. She never thought anyone could really trip over their own feet like that.
“Something’s off!”
Luo Xiaoning narrowed her eyes as she looked at Ling Ning and Ye Xuan. There was definitely something odd going on. She knew Ye Xuan well enough to know that even if Luo Xiaoning herself fell, Ye Xuan wouldn’t show any concern—she probably wouldn’t even look twice.
“Very strange, don’t you think?” Chu Mengyao subtly sidled up beside Luo Xiaoning.
Luo Xiaoning nodded in agreement. The two over there just didn’t seem right. Could they have known each other from before? No, that didn’t seem right either! Judging by their behavior yesterday, they didn’t act like they knew each other.
Suddenly, an idea struck Luo Xiaoning. She gave Ling Ning a wary look and even struck a dramatic pose, startling Chu Mengyao beside her.
“Could it be?! The new ‘Apostle’ is actually a spy sent by ‘Heaven’? Curse you, ‘Enemies of the Night,’ for sneaking in and brainwashing my ‘Fourth Apostle’ while I wasn’t paying attention!”
Seeing Luo Xiaoning’s serious expression, Chu Mengyao suddenly had the urge to pin her to the ground and smack her silly. But then she remembered that this idiot was still her boss, so she let it go.
Before long, more customers began arriving at the café—more than even yesterday. With no other option, Chu Mengyao dragged Luo Xiaoning out to help with the customers.
A chuuni maid was actually quite a hit. Despite Luo Xiaoning’s protests, it was clear she was enjoying herself.
“Where’s the order I placed?”
“It’ll be ready soon.”
With the café getting so busy and Xia You alone in the kitchen, things were piling up. Though most of the orders were simple, their sheer number made it difficult to keep up.
“I’ll go check on the kitchen.”
“You can cook?” Chu Mengyao asked, a bit surprised.
“I know a little.”
“In that case, could you lend a hand?” Chu Mengyao had no better options at the moment. Other than Xia You, no one else in the café knew how to cook. Who would’ve thought Ling Ning could?
When Ling Ning entered the kitchen, she found Xia You so busy she didn’t even notice her come in. Only when Xia You finally finished her current task did she realize Ling Ning was standing right next to her. Startled, she took an involuntary step back, stammering, “Y-you… I…”
Ling Ning smiled gently. “Mengyao thought you might need some help, so she sent me in.” With that, she deftly started working, having observed Xia You’s process for a while beforehand and picking up the basics.
With Ling Ning’s help, their efficiency improved significantly. Though initially their cooperation was a bit clumsy, they quickly developed a smooth rhythm. Chu Mengyao, who came to pick up a tray, couldn’t help but marvel at how well they were working together.
When there was downtime in the kitchen, Ling Ning would go out front to serve customers, chatting and laughing with them. If Zhou Xiaoxiao was too busy, she would also help make tea or mix drinks. Watching all this, Luo Xiaoning felt her decision yesterday had been absolutely correct—maids as capable as Ling Ning were hard to come by.
Making tea and mixing drinks seemed to come naturally to Ling Ning. She must have worked at a tea shop or something similar before—there was no other way she could be so skilled.
