Houtarou Oreki Classroom of the Elite

Chapter 21: Chapter 021 ↦ Suzune, the Frugal Woman! Reading as a Open Book!

Suzune is quite beautiful, with an inherent dignified aura. However, it's this very aura that seems to intimidate others, keeping them at bay. The cafeteria is bustling, yet the area around her remains conspicuously vacant.

How reclusive she is.

Moreover, her brother, Manabu, has again transferred 100,000 Points to her, though her current meal plan costs a mere 600 Points. She's remarkably frugal — easy to maintain, one might say.

From this perspective, Suzune possesses additional attractive qualities.

Houtarou, however, doesn't view school as a venue for dating or seeking a future spouse. So, he approached her directly.

Suzune is a diligent student. Though she had obtained her meal, she didn't begin eating immediately. Instead, she sat down, took out her vocabulary book, and started memorizing 30 words.

"Do you remember me, Horikita-san?" Houtarou approached her.

"You're... Houtarou Oreki."

She couldn't possibly forget. After all, the student before her was from Class A. He had come to Class D the previous day to sell materials, and she alone had paid 100,000 Points.

Moreover, yesterday, he had also saved her from her brother's clutches. Although she had learned a humbling lesson, Houtarou — who could even take away her brother's Points — was clearly a formidable person.

In her view, if not for a mistake in class placement, she should have been assigned to Class A as well. However, her brother had rejected the notion that she was a seeded player. In other words, in her brother's eyes, she was weak.

As a result, Suzune's dignified aura seemed to have diminished somewhat.

This caught the attention of a golden-haired, angel-like girl sitting nearby.

"It's time to fulfill your brother's request." Houtarou informed her, "I'll take action after school today and contact you then."

"I see..." She had no objections. Her brother had already advanced 500,000 Points to him for this, so she also hoped to make some progress herself.

"By the way, how's the situation in your Class D today?" He asked.

"According to your Class A's Mashima-sensei, we've already lost 20 points today." Suzune replied, "The school rules were explained this morning, but some students didn't believe them, and others couldn't control themselves. There were many minor classroom disruptions, like playing with phones or reading manga."

'Is that so?' Houtarou nodded, "Then you might need to assist me more seriously."

"Why?" She put down her vocabulary book.

"You might need to pursue the 20 million point route." He suggested, "If you gather that many points, you can choose to change classes. Do you think you can lead your classmates to climb up through normal methods instead? So far, no student has managed to amass 20 million points. If you do it, you'll demonstrate your exceptional ability. Even your brother would have to acknowledge you."

"My brother's acknowledgment—" Suzune looked at him intently, "It's as if you've peered into my heart."

"I understand the feeling of having an extremely talented older sibling." Houtarou said with a smile, "As the younger ones, we admire them. Their talents are truly formidable. Yet even a small acknowledgment from them brings us joy."

Suzune had come to this school because her brother received a recommendation. She had always strived to be like her excellent brother, but now she realized she simply wanted to gain his approval — to prove she wasn't worthless.

Indeed, it was her near-expulsion the previous night that had ignited her motivation. She was determined to prove her worth.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the cafeteria...

"Kamuro-san, are you free today and tomorrow?" Arisu asked, standing up at their original table and leaning on her cane.

It was Friday, and according to school rules, students could start their weekend immediately after classes ended in the afternoon.

Was Arisu planning to occupy Masumi's weekend? What could she be up to?

"What do you mean?" Masumi inquired, looking up at her.

"I won't be tutoring you this week." Arisu replied, still standing with her cane, "I need to assign you a task. I want you to follow Oreki-kun. His next actions might be interesting — he's aiming for 20 million points. He should act soon, as no student in this school has gathered so many points yet, so I'm quite intrigued."

"Oh—"

So she was arranging for Masumi to tail him.

This was a challenging assignment. Houtarou possessed strong counter-surveillance skills and could quickly detect if someone was following him, like Airi a couple hours ago. It would be quite difficult.

Nevertheless, Masumi didn't object.

On one hand, Arisu had discovered her weakness. If exposed, she might face expulsion — a severe consequence. She deeply regretted her lack of self-control earlier. However, as long as she wasn't caught, there wouldn't be a problem.

At the same time, the school's unique system made her realize that if Arisu or Houtarou managed the class well, she might still graduate as a Class A student. The future prospects were promising.

So, the current hardships were all for future rewards.

Masumi gave herself a mental pep talk.
