Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Press On or Retreat?
The Disguised Ghost's replacement effect was swift. Within mere moments, both of Feng An's legs had turned into blood-soaked, immobile stumps, leaving him trapped in place.
"Hurry! I can feel the Ghost Skin starting to revive—I can't hold it back much longer!" Feng An shouted anxiously at Jiang Yan.
His upper body was turning pale, veins bulging beneath his skin, as his form contorted, resembling a violent, half-dead corpse. The Ghost Skin within him was surging toward full resurrection.
Since the Disguised Ghost's attack replaced but didn't suppress the Ghost Skin, the ghost began fighting with Feng An for control, amplifying its revival.
"Just hold on a bit longer!" Jiang Yan clenched his teeth and condensed the ghost domain, accelerating its erosion of the wall.
If he could activate his third-tier ghost domain, Jiang Yan felt confident the wall would shatter instantly. But a chasm separated the second tier from the third; he could sense that forcing it would cause his body to implode before he succeeded.
Finally, the ghost domain's erosion neared completion. The concrete wall had been hollowed out, exposing a murky gray beyond. Yet the inside of the shrine remained completely obscured.
"It's finally done!"
With a sigh of relief, Jiang Yan manipulated the ghost domain to shoot forward, piercing through the wall. In a flash, he activated the domain's teleportation ability and pulled all three of them inside.
It all happened in the blink of an eye, leaving the Disguised Ghost standing bewildered outside the wall.
Seeing its targets vanish, the Disguised Ghost seemed momentarily dazed. It turned, staring at the gap in the wall with hesitation, unsure if it should proceed.
After a long pause, the skin on its body began to regenerate, and its clothes shifted, transforming back into the appearance of the elderly village chief.
The "village chief" coughed and leaned on his cane, resuming his patrol around the shrine's perimeter.
Inside the shrine, the three of them finally breathed a sigh of relief. Feng An immediately looked down, checking his legs, and saw that they had returned to normal. The resurrection of the Ghost Skin within him had also subsided.
"Thank you! A few more seconds, and I would've been consumed by the Ghost Skin," he said gratefully, looking at Jiang Yan.
Jiang Yan simply nodded, his face remaining serious. There was little cause for celebration; this shrine could be even more dangerous than they had expected.
After all, it was a place even the Disguised Ghost dared not enter.
As they looked around, an unsettling feeling began to creep over them. Despite the blazing sun outside, the sky within the shrine grounds was dim and gray, without a cloud or trace of sunlight.
Around them lay heaps of rubble, dark and aged, cloaked in a fog that filled the air with a damp chill and a faint scent of decay.
"Are we sure this is a shrine? It feels more like a graveyard!" the man in the black hat muttered uneasily.
"This only proves we're in the right place," Jiang Yan replied. "This shrine must be the source of the village's strangeness."
As a precaution, Jiang Yan kept a thin layer of his ghost domain active around them. Though the yellowish glow should have stood out in this dark environment, here it seemed barely visible.
"This whole shrine is inside a ghost domain. Stay close and don't wander off," Jiang Yan warned.
The other two nodded eagerly. They had no intention of leaving the safety of Jiang Yan's domain, knowing it was their best protection.
Under Jiang Yan's lead, they ventured further, but after some time, the shrine remained elusive, and the mist around them grew ever thicker, their visibility shrinking with every step.
Then, Jiang Yan suddenly stopped, and Feng An looked at him, puzzled, though the man in the black hat seemed to understand.
"This ghost domain is larger than I expected. If we keep going, we might get lost in it," Jiang Yan explained.
"Lost? Isn't that a bit much? I mean, it's just a small shrine, right?" Feng An looked doubtful.
"Hmph, looks like you've never experienced a ghost domain like this before," the man in the black hat sneered, gesturing behind them. "Take a look back."
Feng An, still skeptical, turned around. But as soon as he did, his eyes widened in shock.
"How… how did the wall get so far away? Didn't we just walk a few steps?"
The wall they had breached was now a thin white line in the distance, barely visible.
"We're not actually inside the shrine itself," Jiang Yan clarified. "We're within a ghost's domain—a far larger one than expected. That's why I'm asking if we should press on."
"Why wouldn't we? We worked so hard to get in here; we can't turn back now. Besides, that Disguised Ghost is still outside," Feng An argued.
Just the thought of the Disguised Ghost sent chills down his spine. He had already triggered its killing rule, making it too dangerous to remain outside.
"I just wanted to consult with you both. I don't want my decision to endanger your lives. If you want to leave, I can still use the second-tier ghost domain to bring us out. But if we go deeper, I can't make any guarantees," Jiang Yan said.
Though they had only taken a few steps, Jiang Yan could feel his ghost domain being heavily suppressed. Right now, he could still escape if needed, but any further, and he'd lose that option.
His words brought a tense silence. The potential danger inside the shrine was unknown, and no one could say if their escape from the village lay here. If it didn't, going deeper could be a fatal mistake.
Though the man in the black hat desperately wanted to escape the village, the risk of pushing further weighed on him. Just as he was about to voice his thoughts, Feng An spoke up first.
"We're going in! We're already here—there's no turning back now."
The man in the black hat was taken aback by Feng An's resolve. This brashness seemed typical of an inexperienced ghost-tamer, and he wondered how someone like Feng An had risen to lead Dachuan City. It seemed the headquarters must be quite short-staffed.
Still, thinking about the Disguised Ghost outside, he realized Feng An's stance made sense; there was no safe retreat now.
"Plus, my teammate Liu Ming ran into the shrine as well. If we keep going, we might find him," Feng An added.
"Liu Ming?"
Both Jiang Yan and the man in the black hat looked at him in surprise. Finding Liu Ming would boost their chances significantly.
Hearing this, the man in the black hat hesitated, then glanced at Jiang Yan, seeking his opinion.
"What do you think, college boy?"
Jiang Yan considered the situation, his expression serious. "I'm with Feng An. Let's go deeper and try to end this. That Disguised Ghost is waiting outside. If we leave now, getting back in will be nearly impossible. The root of the village's curse is almost certainly linked to this shrine."
The man in the black hat paused, then nodded, impressed by Jiang Yan's bravery. Sometimes, it took a certain fearlessness to solve supernatural cases.
"Fine, I'm with you. Besides, you're the one with the ghost domain," he said with a resigned shrug.
Having reached a conclusion, they pressed onward, but soon the fog thickened to an oppressive density.
The mist had become so dense that they could barely see the path. Jiang Yan looked down and realized his first-tier ghost domain was entirely suppressed here.
After a few more minutes, the fog became so heavy that their surroundings vanished into a gray haze. They could only make out each other's silhouettes, and the air was filled with an eerie whistling.
Their footsteps grew erratic as if something was circling closer.
Jiang Yan's instincts flared. "Something's coming our way!"
