Chapter 398: Story 398: The Core Awakens

Zara moved like a phantom through the darkened corridors, her heart pounding in rhythm with the faint hum of the Core. The stolen data was secure in her pocket, but the real fight had only just begun. The Warden's taunting voice still echoed in her mind, and with every step, she could feel the weapon's power growing. Too late? Not if she had anything to say about it.

The hall opened into a massive, domed chamber. In the center, the Core hovered, suspended above a chasm. Its crimson glow pulsed violently now, illuminating ancient symbols etched into the surrounding walls. The air crackled with energy—unstable, chaotic. Zara gritted her teeth as a sickly heat washed over her.

"You're running out of time, Kincaid," the Warden's voice boomed again, this time from above. She spotted him on a balcony overlooking the chamber, flanked by two heavily armed guards. The smugness in his tone was unbearable. "The Core will rewrite this world. Humanity is obsolete. You've fought well, but—"

"Save the monologue," Zara cut him off, raising her pistol. She fired, forcing the guards to scatter. The Warden stepped back into the shadows, leaving his men to deal with her.

Zara sprinted across the platform, ducking behind pillars as gunfire erupted around her. One of the guards broke cover, charging forward with a rifle blazing. Zara slid under a volley of bullets, firing upward as she moved. The guard fell with a grunt, his weapon clattering to the floor.

The second guard was smarter, pinning her behind a column with suppressive fire. Zara's eyes flicked to the Core—it was now pulsing faster, the hum rising into a deep, resonant whine. It's almost ready.

"Enough games!" she snarled.

Zara grabbed a grenade from her harness, primed it, and hurled it across the chamber. The explosion sent the guard flying, his screams lost in the roar of the blast. Dust and smoke billowed through the room, but Zara didn't pause. She sprinted toward a control panel beneath the Core, her fingers dancing across the keys.

She wasn't a tech expert, but she didn't need to be—there were only two options: shutdown or detonate.

A roar of laughter came from the balcony. The Warden stepped forward, his silhouette framed by the Core's infernal glow. "You think you can stop it? The Core is beyond your comprehension!"

"I don't need to understand it," Zara shot back, her hand hovering over the console. "I just need to make sure it doesn't fall into your hands."

The Warden's grin faltered. "You wouldn't—"

"Watch me."

Zara slammed her palm onto the detonate sequence. Alarms blared. The Core screamed, its glow flaring to blinding intensity. The Warden's face twisted in rage as the platform beneath Zara began to quake.

"You'll kill us all!" he bellowed.

Zara smirked. "Better than letting you win."

As the room collapsed around her, Zara turned and ran. Behind her, the Core exploded, sending shockwaves of fire and energy tearing through the chamber.

The fight wasn't over yet—but Zara had just started the countdown to the Warden's end.
