Chapter 14: Chapter 15: The Underdog, Tobi
On the 16th training ground, Mu Yue was calling the roll before the exam.
Since the entire school was taking the exam and the practical test required space, the schoolyard clearly couldn't fit so many people. Therefore, they went directly to the training ground for the exam.
After confirming all the candidates had arrived, Mu Yue and Kimura Sannin announced the start of the lottery.
The rules for the practical exam were simple: the students would be called up in the order of the class roster to draw lots. The numbers drawn would determine the opponents. For example, number one would fight number two, number three would fight number four, and so on.
"I got number one! Rin, what number did you get?" After drawing his lot, Tobi eagerly approached Rin.
"I'm number ten, so I guess you'll be in the first match," Rin answered.
"It doesn't matter which match I'm in. I'll definitely win," Tobi replied confidently. He believed everyone would be shocked by his current strength.
After training with Mu Yue for a month, Tobi felt he was constantly improving. He was now far ahead of the person he was just a month ago.
After asking Rin, Tobi also inquired about Might Guy's number.
"Forty," Might Guy replied.
"Looks like we'll probably meet in the final match," Tobi remarked, surprised that Might Guy and he were placed at opposite ends.
"Don't lose before me, Tobi!" Might Guy gave Tobi a thumbs-up, cheering him on.
"This should be my line! After all, I'm Uchiha," Tobi said, unsure whether Might Guy was joking or being serious. Either way, it sounded like a challenge.
"Where do you two get all this confidence from?" a classmate teased. How could two underdogs talk like they were at the peak?
"The first match is about to begin. Please, contestant number one, Uchiha Tobi, and contestant number two, Uchiha Tetsuka, prepare for your battle," Mu Yue announced as he glanced at the time, signaling the start of the exam.
Tobi didn't engage with those mocking him and quickly walked to the designated square, preparing for the match.
Uchiha Tetsuka also stepped into the field and exchanged a brief glance with Tobi.
Though they were both Uchiha, of the same age, and in the same class, they had barely spoken to each other. There was no dramatic backstory between them, just mutual indifference.
Uchiha Tetsuka thought Tobi was a bit slow, not very strong, and often late. He had never seen such a weak Uchiha before.
Tobi, on the other hand, thought Uchiha Tetsuka looked cold and unapproachable.
"It's interesting now that both sides are Uchiha," someone commented, barely holding in their laughter.
They were both from the Uchiha clan, so whoever lost would be embarrassed.
"This isn't interesting at all. The only outcome is Uchiha Tetsuka winning. Uchiha Tobi doesn't stand a chance," someone else said, confident it was a one-sided battle.
"You know, Uchiha Tetsuka only lost to Kakashi in the first year. He's been the top student in the class every year since."
"As for Uchiha Tobi, what can he do? He failed his theory exams and his practical skills are average. How could he beat Uchiha Tetsuka?"
They nodded in agreement. Uchiha Tetsuka was a model Uchiha ninja—outstanding in both theory and practice. No one in the class could match him, except for the freakish Kakashi who had graduated early.
It seemed highly unlikely that Uchiha Tobi, who was considered the underdog, could defeat the exceptional Uchiha Tetsuka.
"Tobi, be careful," Rin said, her voice full of concern.
She felt Tobi had really bad luck. Given his current strength, not saying he'd be at the top of the class, but he shouldn't be a one-hit wonder. However, facing Uchiha Tetsuka, who was always first in the class, Rin could only hope Tobi wouldn't push himself too hard and get hurt.
Mentally, she supported Tobi's victory, but realistically, there was a huge gap in their strength.
"I know almost no one is counting on me, but that just makes the victory even sweeter when it happens!" Might Guy crossed his arms and smiled brightly. Unlike everyone else, he believed in Tobi's victory.
The commotion in Class 4 drew the attention of students from other classes, with many walking over to take a look.
The practical exam allowed for more freedom, as long as they didn't leave the training ground. However, once they saw Tobi and Tetsuka, many lost interest.
They all knew the capabilities of the students in each class after years of observation. Watching a match between Uchiha Tetsuka and Uchiha Tobi seemed like a mismatch, a pure case of one-sided domination.
Only a few students stayed behind, curious to see Tetsuka's true strength.
The two opponents stood facing each other, each forming a hand sign.
This was a necessary procedure in the ninja school battles—announcing to the opponent that they were about to fight, followed by a peace sign after the match to show that they were still good partners.
"Start!" Mu Yue announced when both students were ready.
The moment Mu Yue's words fell, Uchiha Tetsuka swiftly took three shuriken from his ninja pouch and hurled them at Tobi, aiming for his head, torso, and legs. Then, he quickly charged toward Tobi.
Tobi also drew three shuriken and threw them just as quickly.
The six shuriken collided with a sharp metallic sound and fell to the ground.
"The Uchiha clan's shuriken throwing is indeed impressive. Even Uchiha Tobi, who has relatively ordinary talent, is skilled with shuriken throwing," Kimura Sannin commented.
To intercept shuriken with precision requires excellent accuracy.
Because the area wasn't large, Uchiha Tetsuka quickly closed the distance and delivered a swift right hook.
Tobi didn't back down and met the punch with his own clenched fist, engaging in a fierce hand-to-hand battle with Uchiha Tetsuka.
The two exchanged blows, raising dust on the field as their fight became more intense.
"Huh, Uchiha Tobi is pretty good at taijutsu?" someone watching the match remarked in surprise.
The so-called Uchiha clan underdog, Uchiha Tobi, was actually holding his ground against Uchiha Tetsuka.
The students from other classes were surprised, and even Tobi's classmates were in shock.
The usual scenario was that Tobi would be knocked out in a single blow, but now, he was actually holding his own.
"Tobi has really gotten a lot stronger," Rin said, her mouth slightly open in disbelief.
She had always thought Tobi was just putting on a brave front, but now, she realized he had truly improved!
"Uchiha Tobi is still a little behind," Kimura Sannin said, shaking his head. As a chunin, he could see much more than the students could.
"His taijutsu is still lacking," Mu Yue nodded in agreement.
After all, he had only trained for a month, and he couldn't perfect everything in that short time. During this month, Tobi had mainly focused on fire-style ninjutsu, and under Mu Yue's guidance, he had made great progress in mastering nature transformations.
As Kimura Sannin had predicted, Tobi was gradually being pushed back by Tetsuka.
"I told you, Uchiha Tobi could never beat Uchiha Tetsuka," someone who had mocked Tobi earlier sighed in relief.
If Tobi had won, it would've made them look foolish.
But now, they were glad they wouldn't have to change their opinion of Tobi.
Tobi seized an opportunity to use Tetsuka's punch to temporarily create distance between them. He quickly began to form hand signs.
The fire-style ninjutsu he had been training for so long was not meant for a fist fight with Uchiha Tetsuka.
